Released today as part of Nikon’s new Style Series line, the S8000 continues the trend of narrowing the gap between high end, image-focused SLRs and conveniently pocket-sized point-and-shoots. The diminutive camera, at 14.2 megapixels with full 10x optical zoom, ranks thinnest in its class. Barely larger than a pack of cigarettes, it’s a handy everyday choice for the discerning photographer. I had a sneak preview of one last month and was really pleased with its feel and performance.

Along with an increased start-up period and shutter-release time over previous models, Nikon added a four-way image stabilization system to compensate for its small, hard-to-steady proportion. An advanced flash feature promises more natural-looking images by boosting ISO settings and shutter speeds in low light.

Other new features include a 30-frame-per-second HD movie capability, high-speed photo shooting, with up to four shots per second, and a three-inch 921,000-dot LCD screen.

The S8000 retails for $300 and comes in red, bronze and champagne silver, in addition to the black model shown above.
