More prison design objects, and why giving inmates access to a shop is a bad idea

“Most prisons have gyms and libraries…because that’s what we need: Stronger, smarter criminals,” quipped one comedian.

Well, is giving them access to a workshop any better? Germany-based photographer Marc Steinmetz catalogued a series of confiscated prison-shop-built contraband, ranging from a crucifix with a nasty shiv hidden inside to escape ladders built from bookshelves and candelabras that can be bent into grappling hooks. Several of the objects in Steinmetz’s collection were used for successful escapes and only discovered after the fact. Check ’em out here.
