Blizzard-whipped New York is in store for a frigid Valentine treat tomorrow, when the Ice Heart is installed in Times Square at the corner of West 46th Street and Broadway. The ten-foot-high sculpture, assembled from masonry-scaled blocks of ice, was designed by Moorhead & Moorhead for the Times Square Alliance. The New York-based architecture and industrial design studio known for its big ideas bested three other finalists—Aranda/Lasch, Situ Studio, and su11—in a competition judged by the Alliance’s Art Review Committtee, whose members include MoMA’s Barry Bergdoll, Performa founder RoseLee Goldberg, and Tom Finkelpearl of the Queens Museum of Art.

Brothers Granger and Robert Moorhead tapped the master sculptors at New York’s Okamoto Studio to wield the chilly chainsaws, while Robert Silman Associates served as structural engineer on the project. “The Ice Heart will constantly change as its crystalline form picks up the lights, colors, and chaos of Times Square,” says Granger Moorhead. “We look forward to the kaleidoscopic effect, and think visitors will enjoy it as well.” The Ice Heart will be on view until it melts away, and the sub-freezing temperatures predicted for the days ahead bode well for its longevity.
