Well apparently the “design-as-art” market is still alive and kicking. Either that or people just really love sitting on Marc Newson‘s chairs. Following up from the chair has fetched a whopping $1.6 million, breaking the previous records held by other copies of the same chair just two years ago. So does this mean the recession/depression is now over and we can go back to buying bunches of stuff again? Here’s a bit:

The futuristic metal lounger was the star of a 168-lot auction at Phillips de Pury & Co. It had been expected to fetch between 500,000 pounds and 700,000 pounds and was bought by a telephone bidder. The chair was fought for by two other bidders on the phone and two more in the room. The price included fees.
