LG’s modular cell phone

While I’m an iPhone fan, I must admit I was worried by the number of phones growing to resemble (if not outright copy) its design; if all phones looked like the iPhone, innovation would then be limited to software, and as a capitalist industrial designer I want us to arrive at more physical permutations of objects through competition.

So it’s nice to see LG’s recent experiment with form factors: Their VX9600, above, toys with the idea of modularity with its detachable keyboard. I’m not sure I’d buy it–I’m not even sure I like it–but steps like these are what will lead us to more perfect objects. The iPhone’s purty, but it oughtn’t be the form factor end-all!
