LED wheels: Is it possible to harness this awful design trend for good?

pOkay so they’ve got these “Pimpstar” car wheels with fairly mindless programmable messages:/p

pThen there are these BlueGear self-reporting fans, cooling fans for gaming PCs that numerically display the rotation speed and temperature (of the hard drive, I’m assuming):/p

pobject width=”468″ height=”375″param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/ihL8SEHi8uUhl=en_USfs=1″/paramparam name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”/paramparam name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”/paramembed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/ihL8SEHi8uUhl=en_USfs=1″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”468″ height=”375″/embed/object/p

pSo I got to thinking: Is it possible to install some combination of these on bicycle wheels that could display information that’s actually useful to pedestrians? For example, let’s say every other bicycle you saw had a wheel that displayed the current temperature or even a primitive icon-based weather forecast for the next few hours. /p

pGranted if every urban cyclist had one of these, it would become another data-overload item we’d learn to block out, but for the first few months it might be an interesting way to draw attention to bicycles and get more people thinking about them (hopefully as an alternative means of transport, not a display item for a silhouette of a sexy mud-flap woman). Just a thought./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/led_wheels_is_it_possible_to_harness_this_awful_design_trend_for_good_16398.asp”(more…)/a
