Japanese trials: Generating electricity from footfalls

Turning treadmills and revolving doors into power sources is a neat, if somewhat obvious, idea; a less intuitive concept is to reap power from a flat floor, which was recently tested by NEDO, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization in Japan.

NEDO placed specially designed tiles called hatsudenyuka (electricity-generating floors) at a high-traffic spot outside of Tokyo’s Shibuya station, harnessing energy with every salaryman and schoolgirl’s footfall, in a recent test run. The gains of the study are now being analyzed; should it prove to be efficient enough, we will hopefully see more of these in future.
