Gavari updates the violin

It would be strange if through the years, the mass-produced automobile we all know retained its original early 1900s aesthetic; but that’s pretty much what has happened with the violin. The baroque styling of the musical instrument has remained unchanged for over 500 years, points out Austria-based Gerda Hopfgartner.

Hopfgartner is an omni-designer whose work spans every area of design from interior and industrial to graphics and fashion, and she’ll be exhibiting her Semiacoustic Violin re-design at the Tokyo Design Week later this month, under her brand name, Gavari. “It was a challenge to create a new modern form for the 21th century,” she writes. “Maybe [it] will change the classical music business.”
