Turning a 180 to museums who want to keep their collections, the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin has kicked off a campaign to raise $30,000 to restore five of the original dresses used in the film Gone with the Wind. The costumes are but a small piece of the museum’s massive David O. Selznick Collection, totaling more than 5,000 boxes of the famous film producer’s archives. And though the museum has all this material, pieces like the dresses are extremely fragile and need a good deal of work before they can be displayed. As such, the Center has kicked off a campaign trying to raise the restoration money in order to have the costumes ready in time for 2014, the 75th anniversary of Gone with the Wind.

Concerning the creation of costumes for Gone With The Wind, costume designer Walter Plunkett had remarked, “I don’t think it was my best work or even the biggest thing I did… But that picture, of course, will go on forever, and that green dress, because it makes a story point, is probably the most famous costume in the history of motion pictures.”
