While rumors of new iPads are whipped up and Fifth Avenue shops are patented, the biggest news this week for Apple is sure to be the removal of Mark Papermaster, the executive who oversaw the hardware design/engineering of the iPhone 4. Following a successful launch, the phone was bogged down in controversy over its antenna reception. While certainly not helpful to Papermaster’s standing at the company, according to this terrific recap of his ouster by the Wall Street Journal, the engineer-turned-executive was also having difficulty “maneuvering Apple’s internal politics.” For further reading, as with all things Apple related, we recommend reading John Gruber‘s thoughts on the exit. Particularly interesting is the theory that maybe the writing had been on the wall for a while, seeing as Papermaster never appeared in the popular promotional video for the iPhone after the device was announced earlier this year.
