pIf I remember correctly–it was a long time ago–on the very first episode of IThe Simpsons/I Homer decides to kill himself. He locates a small, heavy boulder and lugs it across town to a bridge, where he’s going to tie it to his leg and jump over the side. Once he arrives at the bridge, exhausted from carrying the boulder, we briefly see there is another boulder of similar size already sitting on the bridge./p

pI’m reminded of that every time I buy laundry detergent. The nearest supermarket is a six-block walk for me, and large detergent bottles are heavy. They’re also filled primarily with water, something that the City of New York has already graciously arranged to have pumped directly into my apartment. Is this arrangement not silly? And if you try ordering liquid detergent on Amazon, you’ll see the shipping costs are insane. It’s expensive to truck all those bottles around, not to mention the carbon footprint./p
