The Cooper Union has just announced a collaboration between their Continuing Education Department and the Type Directors Club, who will be working together on the first US-based certification program for typeface design. Type@Cooper will begin in the fall, running two nights per week between October and December. The certification is divided into three terms which will fill an entire year, wherein there will be a mix of hands-on workshops, lectures, and research projects, as well as guest speakers coming in throughout the terms. Here’s a bit:

“Before the Continuing Education Department of The Cooper Union and TDC partnered, there were no real options in New York for professionals seeking to take an in-depth program in typeface design. The only serious Typeface Design program alternatives were being offered abroad,” said Charles Nix, Chairman of the TDC Board and Chair TDC Education Committee. “The certificate program is unique in its scope and structure and opens a new door of opportunities for professionals, where an industry void currently exists in this country. The Typeface Design Certificate Program will give graphic designers and type practitioners the tools they need to innovate and create by learning from industry luminaries such as Roger Black.”

Applications are being accepted until the end of the month, so if you’re game, get moving.
