Cinema Eye Honors 2010

Now in its third year, the Cinema Eye Honors made its name recognizing superlative artistry in documentary film, often highlighting the type of works that tend to fly under the mainstream radar. To underline this aim, 2010’s ceremony will precede the Academy Awards for the first time, kicking off this Thursday in the Times Center. (See details below.)

Current categories include the general cinematography and editing prizes, along with signature additions like the Spotlight Award, designed to honor American films that haven’t yet received the recognition that they deserve.

The the top Nonfiction Feature award went to the Brazilian kidnapping film “Manda Bala (Send A Bullet)” the inaugural year and James Marsh’s “Man On Wire” last time. Among films vying for this year’s top honor, the highly topical agricultural food expose, “Food, Inc.,” and “October Country,” (which we had the pleasure of screening at last year’s Camden International Film Festival) both make worthy contenders.

Tickets for Thursday’s event are still available. See the full list of nominees on the Cinema Eye Honors website, where you can also cast your vote for the 2010 Audience Choice Prize.
