Christopher Bailey and Burberry Win Big at British Fashion Awards

bfa09.jpgBurberry is on a roll, notwithstanding its hideous new Burberry Heart Collection (a play for the Coach-soaked tween crowd?). The British company’s signature trenchcoats, checked goods, and Prorsum ready-to-wear line are selling briskly, bringing in £572.4 million (approximately $930.3 million, at current exchange rates) during the first six months of 2009, according to financial results released Wednesday. Later that day, 500 fashionable souls gathered at London’s Royal Courts of Justice for the twenty-fifth annual British Fashion Awards, where Burberry’s chief creative officer Christopher Bailey (at right) took home the evening’s highest honor: British Fashion Council (BFC) Designer of the Year. It turned out to be a busy night for Bailey, who also collected the Designer Brand of the Year award on behalf of Burberry. During his acceptance speech, Bailey announced that Burberry Prorsum would continue to show at London Fashion Week in February (having recently decamped from the Milan shows). Other winners included Kim Jones for Dunhill (Menswear Designer of the Year), Katie Hillier (Accessory Designer of the Year), Christopher Kane (BFC British Collection of the Year), John Galliano (BFC Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design), and Vogue creative director Grace Coddington, who was awarded the Isabella Blow Award for a Fashion Creator.
