Here’s a good piece of news: Mobile phones from different manufacturers will finally share a common type of charging socket, in line with an accord reached by mobile communications consortium GSMA. This would mean “the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers and the enhancement of the customer experience by simplifying the charging of mobile phones.”

“Given the estimated eight million handsets sold in Australia every year, moving to a standard, universal charger for mobile phones has the potential to dramatically reduce duplication and waste. The proposed charger could be made available as a standalone accessory, eliminating the current requirement for a charger to be included with every new mobile phone,” said Ross Fielding, Executive Director, Telstra.

Unfortunately, it will take until 2012 for everyone involved to get it together.
