Squeaky Clean Teeth

There should be more to children’s toothbrushes that just cartoon figures, toy shapes and colors. Brushing teeth correctly is important and as a parent of two kids, I know the pain of getting it done right. Cavities are a worry and so are the tarter, I guess the best way to entice them to brush correctly will be to give them something fun and interactive like the Orgel.

The Orgel Toothbrush integrates a bell-timer-toy into the body. It’s like one of those string-wound toys that beams out music while retracting back to the base. Essentially you will know for sure that a three-minute routine has been followed and healthy gums + teeth are in and tooth decay are out!

The Men’s Only Toothbrush

The goal for designing the Braun Concept Electric Toothbrush was to clearly define and create a toothbrush that is targeted at men. Unisex designs in toothbrushes often tend to appeal to only one gender, so the task at hand was to see if a design could be created that identifies only with one gender. A look at this concept and it is clear that it’s a sexy men’s-only electric toothbrush! Mission accomplished!

As Aleksandar puts it, “The design of the electric toothbrush is also well connected to its performance – aesthetically designed but also functionally in terms of the requirement to take care of your teeth in the best possible way.”

Oral-B Deep Sweep 5000 Review

Three weeks ago I reached out to Oral-B to review the Deep Sweep 5000, their top of line electric toothbrush. After brushing twice a day, everyday for 2 minutes at a time, I sit here writing to you with whiter teeth, a brighter smile, and confidence to walk into my next dentist appointment with no fear of hearing, “oh you should brush more often.” Hit the jump for my review.

The start of the new year prompted my search for products that could make 2013 better than 2012 and part of that initiative is proper health and hygiene. I’ve always been an avid brusher but manual brushing requires proper form and execution. The Deep Sweep 5000 takes care of both those points by doing all the work for you. The head pulses 40,0000 times and conducts 8,800 sweeps per minute. Manually I could only manage 113 sweeps per minute. Add that to the recommended brushing time of 2 minutes and the Deep Sweep clearly out performs manual brushing.

Those 2 minutes are key to cleaner, whiter teeth. The Deep Sweep comes with a handy Wireless SmartGuide, a companion LCD display that conveniently divides up your mouth into 4 quadrants, brushing each one for 30 seconds before an audible beep tells you to move on. Standby time was excellent, working for nearly 8 days instead of the advertised 10 before juicing up on the included induction charger.

Of course that all depends on which of the 5 brushing modes you use. I generally kept mine on daily cleaning but other modes like deep clean and whitening use more power because the motor augments the speed at which the bristles sweep.

My official verdict? Love it. My teeth are definitely whiter just from 3 weeks of use. Of course there’s a tiny bit of staining that only a dentist equipped with bleach and lasers can remove but the Deep Sweep 5000 is the perfect mini dentist in between visits. It retails for $133 on Amazon and that’s a steal when you consider the comparable competitor is closer to $200.

Freshen that Grill!

3Deeth is the smart, sanitary solution for freshening your mouth that you can conveniently carry in your pocket, purse, or backpack. The disposable version features a squeezable toothpaste reservoir that disperses paste onto the bristles while the non-disposable version is more rigid for a longer lifespan. After applying toothpaste, the user simply bites down on the device, brushing right to left with the grip. Bristles on both sides tackle hard to reach places on both upper and lower teeth simultaneously!

3Deeth is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winning entry.

Meet the Brusheads

The Brusheads is a genius toothbrush collection that will have little ones begging to brush instead of resisting like they often do. Each fun, portable Brushead is presented as a 3D sculptured character that kids will love. The USB powered brushes feature intelligent sensors that detect brushing patterns & play fun audio messages as they’re used to encourage good practice. A synced mobile app lets kids compete their characters with peers & helps parents monitor brushing habits. I call dibs on the panda!

Chic and Consious Toothbrushes

Gotta love these custom toothbrushes by Yumaki! The series of 3 includes: KIRI- a steam pressed bamboo handle with burnmark, FURUI KAME, a faux tortoise shell handle with metal badge, and KICKFLIP, a biodegradable sugar cane plastic handle with lasered texture. Each brush also utilizes antibacterial bamboo charcoal blended nylon bristles for extended lifespan and enhanced hygiene. Do want! But wait there’s more…

The FURUI KAME style is completely random and every handle has a completely unique pattern. But our QC goes through every single handle and picks out only the best looking patterns to put in the range. The toothbrushes that are less aesthetically on point (but still high quality) are donated to third-world orphans. Some styles are more difficult to get right than others and therefore more are donated. More than 1 and a half toothbrushes are donated for every toothbrush sold.

The KICKFLIP brush  with the sugar cane plastic handle takes about 6-8 months to biodegrade in a regular compost, but since bristles still are made in nylon (as with the KIRI bamboo toothbrush), the head should be cut off (and thrown away) before starting the decomposing process. (To speed up the process, the handle can be cut up in smaller pieces.)

Yumaki also offers an ultra-thin toothpick! 1/4th the size of a normal toothpick, it is cut directly from the branch of a special type of bamboo with extremely thin branches which makes it very flexible. It is the closest an organic toothpick can come to being floss since it is so thin it can go straight between teeth.

Floss Trainer

People’s inconsistency in flossing has less to do with not liking the process and more to do with issues of memory and habit development. With this in mind, the Oral Care Habit Development Device was designed into the toothbrush holder as a convenient way to measure and cut floss directly from the holder. The device also includes a timer that gives the user a visual signal and audible beep and can even be controlled with a smartphone app!
