“East London has a thriving community of creative people” – Nicolas Roope

In this final movie in the series filmed by Dezeen for the Stepney Green Design Collection, London design brand Hulger’s creative director Nicolas Roope talks about the “thriving community of creative people” in east London.

Hulger and designer Sam Wilkinson created the energy saving Plumen 001 light bulb, which won the Brit Insurance Design of the Year award last year, and released the smaller Baby Plumen version earlier this year.

“We present [Plumen bulbs] in lots of different ways, but this year we thought we’d step it up and use the light bulbs in a series of chandelier arrangements,” says Roope.

Hulger collaborated with visual consultants Haptic Thought to create the Hollywood Chandelier, made from 40 Baby Plumen bulbs suspended in rows from copper fixings on a mirrored plate.

“Regimented, geometric relationships between the bulbs create an interesting effect with the echoed forms running throughout the structure,” Roope notes.

“It’s nice to make a modernist table in an old artisanal way” – Hugo Passos

East London designer Hugo Passos talks about making his modernist Piet side table without machinery in an “old artisanal way” in this movie filmed by Dezeen.

Passos‘ side tables are made by hand in Portugal from solid walnut wood and he explains that ”no machines were involved in all the joinery”.

The tops are finished with matt lacquer in primary colours that were frequently used by Dutch modernist painter Piet Mondrian, from whom the tables get their name.

“The square sections seen from the top show the walnut going against the lacquer finish in a very bright colour,” says Passos when describing the contrast between the materials.

The asymmetrical legs further echo Mondrian’s geometric paintings and cause the table to look different from various angles.

“Heat-shrinking the polystyrene cups created beautiful shapes” – Paul Cocksedge

In this movie filmed by Dezeen, east London designer Paul Cocksedge describes his discovery of the interesting forms created when polystyrene cups are heated and how he used the process to create a pendant lamp.

"Heat creating the forms for me was a dream come true" - Paul Cocksedge

Cocksedge first experimented with polystyrene cups ten years ago at the Royal College of Art as part of a project set by Ron Arad, who asked students to “grow a product”.

“I placed the cup inside [the oven] and something really beautiful happened,” he explains. Heat distorts the shape of polystyrene while strengthening it, and Cocksedge made a movie of the process in reverse that looked like the cups were growing.

He then built a large number of deformed cups into a sphere to create his Styrene lamp. ”As a designer we always search for form and interesting aesthetics, but this was like a dream come true because the heat was doing it for me,” he continues.

The custom lamp he contributed to the Stepney Green Design Collection is 90cm in diameter – almost twice the size of the designs sold commercially – and was previously on display at the V&A Museum in London as part of an exhibition on British Design. Cocksedge has a studio in London Fields, east London, not far from Stepney Green.

“East London has a good vibe for any creative industry” – Magnus Pettersen

Designer Magnus Pettersen talks about his Locker side table and how he was attracted to east London because it has a “good vibe for any creative industry” in this movie filmed by Dezeen.

"East London has a good vibe for any creative industry" - Magnus Pettersen

“I’m attracted to east London due to the feel of the whole place, and also it’s a good vibe for any creative industry whether it’s furniture design, graphic design or even advertising,” says Pettersen.

"East London has a good vibe for any creative industry" - Magnus Pettersen

He contributed a blackened ash and aluminium side table from his Locker furniture series to the Stepney Green Design Collection.

“The inspiration for the series came from those industrial lockers you find in factories in the sixties,” he explains, also citing the luxury of eighteenth century France and the proportions of designs from the mid-twentieth century as muses.

The aluminium used for the side table drawer, anodised to create a unique colour, is punctured with small holes and folded over at the top to create the drawer handle. Pettersen’s studio is in Stoke Newington, east London, close to Dezeen’s office.

“East London has a great creative atmosphere” – Gitta Gschwendtner

Designer Gitta Gschwendtner talks about making her Bodge Bench for the Stepney Green Design Collection and east London’s “great creative atmosphere” in this movie filmed by Dezeen.

"East London has a great creative atmosphere" - Gitta Gschwendtner

Gschwendtner is originally from Germany but has been living in London for over 20 years and has worked from her studio in Hackney, east London, for 12 years.

"East London has a great creative atmosphere" - Gitta Gschwendtner

She worked outdoors using rustic wood-crafting methods to create the two-seater bench from her Bodge series, and the one-off three-seater bench for the collection is based on this design.

"East London has a great creative atmosphere" - Gitta Gschwendtner

“Bodging is a very traditional chair-making technique where you use green timbers and no electricity, working in the woods with hand lathes and axes,” explains Gschwendtner.

The Bodge series also features a two-seater and six-seater bench, as well as a single chair, all made using the same technique in a similar style. The other pieces are all made from oak but this special-edition bench has been crafted out of English olive ash.

“This bench is a tribute to a local hardware shop” – Roger Arquer

In this movie filmed by Dezeen, east London designer Roger Arquer talks about the benches he made for the Stepney Green Design Collection using materials sourced from his local family-run hardware shop just before it closed down.

“In the East End there are always materials to be found” – Nina Tolstrup

In this movie filmed by Dezeen, Studiomama founder Nina Tolstrup talks about the chair she modified for the Stepney Green Design Collection and how “there are always materials to be found” in east London.

Nina Tolstrup on her Re-imagined chair for the Stepney Green Design Collection

“One of the things that is quite fantastic about the East End is that there are always bits, pieces and materials to be found around, and with a little resourcefulness there’s a lot of potential in exploring and finding the beauty in the unloved,” says Tolstrup.

The colourful Re-imagined chairs were first created for an interior project that required new designs quickly, so Tolstrup took chairs she ”found in [her] local streets in Bethnal Green” and gave them a new lease of life.

She stripped the old chairs down to the frames, which she powder-coated in bright colours then added new backs and seats that were upholstered locally to match.

“It’s kind of a full circle: from a chair that was actually from our streets that has found its way back into the Stepney Collection,” she says.

“Street culture is synonymous with east London” – Lee Broom

East London designer Lee Broom talks about making lamps from crystal decanters and how east London’s history and street culture make it an important creative hub in this movie we filmed for the Stepney Green Design Collection.

Lee Broom on his Decanterlight for the Stepney Green Design Collection

Speaking about working in east London, Broom says “it’s important for a designer or creative to be based in an area around other creative people”.

Lee Broom on his Decanterlight for the Stepney Green Design Collection

“It’s not just about people feeding on other people’s creativity,” he continues, “but from a business perspective it’s important that we’re all in a hub so if people in the industry want to visit you, they can also visit other creatives in the area as well.”

Lee Broom on his Decanterlight for the Stepney Green Design Collection

He also describes how east London has “that mix of history and street culture that gives British design its eclecticism”.

“I think I swallowed some of the resin” – Phil Cuttance

In the first of a series of movies about objects we curated for the Stepney Green Design Collection, east London designer Phil Cuttance describes the messy process of casting an extra-large version of his Faceture vase.

"I had to wrestle" with the Faceture vase - Phil Cuttance

Cuttance explains how he had to bolt a special casting jig to his garden fence to cast the 7-kilogram vase. The process was “definitely not as clean as it looks in the images,” he admits.

"I had to wrestle" with the Faceture vase - Phil Cuttance

The litre-and-a-half of resin used to create the vase “went everywhere – I think I swallowed some of it,” he says.

"I had to wrestle" with the Faceture vase - Phil Cuttance

To make the vase, Cuttance first hand-scored a 0.5mm sheet of plastic with a triangular pattern. He then rolled and taped the plastic into an irregular tube to create a mould, manipulating the faceted surface to create a unique pixelated surface. After pouring resin into the mould, it was rotated on a jig as the resin cured. Read more about how the vase was made in our earlier story.

This special version of the vase is 80cm tall and features an extract of a poem by Lilian Bowes Lyon, a poet who wrote about her experiences of living in Stepney  during the Second World War, cast into its base.
