Vernacular Versatility

This architectural accomplishment takes inspiration from traditional Korean Hanok houses that are defined by their wooden structural systems, curvy tiled roofs and strong formal gestures. The core structural element is known as Gagu – the point under the roof where column meets beam and girder without additional fasteners like nails. Using new modeling software, these traditional elements are merged with modern know-how to create a high-rise structure to meet contemporary purposes that also pays homage to the iconic, historically one-story residences.

Modern Trade by the River

The Yongjia World Trade Centre aims to create a new image for the WTC brand as well as a unique symbol for the new riverside city of Wenzhou. Set in the dense economic zone along the coast of Southeast China, next to the Yangtze River Delta region, the riverfront landscape is the unifying element in the overall design. The 5 towers that make up the center include top-floor residences, hotel suites, shopping/commercial areas, and of course, high-end offices for trade and businesses.

The notion of precious objects on a tray drives the main design concept, where the continuous podium landscape occupies the entire site and serves as a tray-like, green plain for the towers. The harmonious composition of the towers affords a unique image of the development from all different views. The composition will interweave with its surroundings, yet will remain recognizable as family of objects.
On the tower scale, “frames” underline the concept of neighbourhoods in the sky which create unique locations with distinct identities. So-called “eyes” are located where the frames overlap. These are commonly used spaces such as sky gardens and lounges for use by residents, or social gathering places for office areas that afford the best views towards the river and Wenzhou city center. Both the frames and the “eyes” enhance the character of this future city symbol.

Live Media Scrapers

The design of UNStudio’s proposal for the Central Business District in Tongzhou, China is a dynamic composition created by introducing asymmetry in plan, orientation, clustering and facade treatment. This build-up of asymmetries has a far-reaching urban effect while simultaneously relating to users on a more personal scale. Six towers form three lively groups which interact according to a layered choreography that extends both below and above the surface.
In relation to the ground and subterranean levels the towers are grouped in three pairs, each standing on a joint platform. As defined by the bridging connections between them, the towers are grouped as a couple, a trio and a single volume.

The silhouette of the towers is derived from a combination of substantial differences between the lower and the upper parts of the buildings and the binding together effects of diagonal wrappings. On the lower parts the towers are marked by dense stacking, whilst towards the top they become smooth and reflective. This textural contrast is mediated by the strong diagonals running the entire length of the towers.

The bridges have numerous roles. They help to cluster the towers and to form interconnections between them which can house many different semi-public functions. They also provide an artificial ground for users of the highest floors. From an urban point of view the bridges can also be read as the tops of large arches.

In addition to the application of active sustainable measures at different scale levels, passive design tools were incorporated from the initial design of the six towers and the podium clusters. Driving features are the winter gardens and green surfaces. Winter gardens are effective within the Tongzhou climate as during long periods of cold temperatures the greenhouse effect is beneficial for preheating indoor spaces. Green surfaces on the public roof and terraces are suitable for rain water harvesting, contribute to human well-being and create an elevated park.

To stimulate social and cultural interaction three large scale media screens are visible from the opposite bank. These are integrated with the winter gardens and the riverfront facade, visible also from the interior of the podium. The transport hub is also fully integrated within the site to ease traffic concerns. The transportation hub will provide convenience to those who work, live and visit the location.

With the asymmetry of the towers, the media facades and the well-located transport hub, this design aims to become the dynamic landmark of Tongzhou.

Wooden Skyscraper

It might surprise you to find that this 34-story residential skyscraper proposed for Stockholm’s cultural hub is composed not of steel, but almost entirely of wood! Though not often used in such vertical structures, the material was chosen for its lightness, natural climate regulation, acoustics and exposed aesthetic quality. While the exterior facade shines with glass, the full effect of the construction is felt inside where every wall, ceiling and floor is clad with natural, warm wood.

Polar Umbrella by Derek Pirozzi

The Polar Umbrella’s buoyant super-structure becomes a statement for the prevention of future depletion of our protective arctic region. Through its desalinization and power facilities, this arctic skyscraper becomes a floating metropolis equipped with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) research laboratories, renewable power stations, dormitory-style housing units, eco-tourist attractions, and ecological habitats for wildlife. A series of these structures would be strategically located in the most affected areas.

The Phobia Skyscraper by Darius Maïkoff & Elodie Godo

The Phobia Skyscraper is a new form of modular suburban residential development for Paris, France. It is located over the “Petite Ceinture”, a former industrial site with excellent views of the city and an extensive transportation network.

Light Park Floating Skyscraper by Ting Xu & Yiming Chen

The Light Park stays afloat thanks to a large, mushroom cap-like helium-filled balloon at its top, and solar-powered propellers directly below. Programmatic platforms that host parks, sports fields, green houses, restaurants, and other uses are suspended from the top of the structure by reinforced steel cables; the platforms fan in different directions around the spherical vessel to balance its weight. These slabs are also staggered to allow for maximum exposure to sunlight on each level.

The Soundscraper by Julien Bourgeois, Olivier Colliez, Savinien de Pizzol, Cédric Dounval & Romain Grouselle

The Soundscraper takes advantage of city noise pollution by capturing airborne sound and converting it into usable energy. It is located next to main transport infrastructures, mostly outside city centers where noise pollution is at its maximum. Motorway junction, railway hub represent no man’s land in the urban territory and areas of greatest efficiency to produce energy.

The Stratosphere by Mingxuan Dong, Yuchen Xiang, Aiwen Xie, Xu Han

As technological innovative and higher latest skyscrapers can be, they still need to rely on the support to the ground. So a higher height usually means more unstableness as well as weaker capacity to resist disasters. The project proposes a mega hex grid that evolves around the earth circumference at a stratosphere height, the principle that support this hypothesis is that it seems to be that in a building the larger the span is, the scale and the unstableness will proportionally increase.

PH Conditioner Skyscraper by Hao Tian, Huang Haiyang & Shi Jianwei

Produced by the fossil fuel used in abundance, as well as the heavy traffic and industrial production, the SO2&NOx drives the PH value of atmosphere under 5.6. Gradually precipitating to the surface of the earth, these acidic materials have caused great harm to plant, architecture and human beings. The project aim to use a gentle way to manage Acid Deposition and eventually turn pollutants into available resources (reclaimed water & chemical fertilizer) for the region of Chongqing.

The Skinscape by Woongyeun Park, Jaegeun Lim, Haejun Jung & Karam Kim

The Skinscape project was inspired from the idea that the natural environment modifies architecture as time passes by and in some instances nature even reclaims it. For example, Banyan trees now cover the Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia built in 12th century. Experts have decided not to remove the trees because they now serve as part of the structural system – building and nature have become one.

This project proposes the creation of decentralized aeroponic vertical farmlands that will be able to provide enough rice for future generations. The basic structure consists of an array of bamboo parallelograms that create stepping terraces of rice fields.

Quantum Skyscraper by Ivan Maltsev & Artem Melnik

The form of a skyscraper is a growing crystal – a structure characterized by the inconstancy and regularity of its elements. The height of the units ranges from 130 to 180 m. At the full height, in the center of Multipurpose Research Complex (MNC), is a static rod – a quantum safe energy source, which will produce energy in the required quantity. The center of quantum computing, greenhouses, walking tracks and, aeration blocks are placed in immediate proximity.

Water Re-balance Tower by Zhang Zhiyang & Liu Chunyao

By building towers that can collect and purify rainwater and also purify the water from the river, several advantageous things occur: clean, drinkable water is readily available for the city; rising river levels are mitigated before flooding occurs; and clean water can also be pumped back under ground to fix the sinking subsidence problem the city is experiencing.

Promised Land by Chen Yao, Xiao Yunfeng, Li Xiaodi, Xie Rui & Yin Xiaoxiang

The Promised Land is conceived as “humans” final homeland, a self-sustainable city on submerged places, shape as massive cross rising over the water level. The building works as a modular self-assembly system. Prefabricated girders and columns made of reinforced concrete are fixed on the ground as foundation, and then prefabricated floors are placed in order to sustain the different programmatic modules.

Ring of Mars by Mamon Alexander & Tyutyunnik Artem
