Surf Sauna: Giving new meaning to mobile hotspot, this beachside accessory makes winter surfing a little more comfortable

Surf Sauna

To score the best waves in the Northeast it takes three things: dedication, luck and a thick skin. Though the water warms up to a comfortable trunks-only temperature in the summer, the best waves pound the shores of New England, New York and…

Ermitage Cabin by SEPTEMBRE

This tiny wooden cabin in Sweden contains a sauna and a bedroom with large picture windows that frame views of the surrounding forest (+ slideshow).

dezeen_Ermitage cabin by Septembre Architecture_5

The cabin was designed by Paris studio SEPTEMBRE for a couple who spend their summers on the remote island of Trossö, off the west coast of Sweden.

dezeen_Ermitage cabin by Septembre Architecture_2

It is situated in a clearing just 50 metres from the the North Sea and the architects told Dezeen that their brief was for “a room with a view of the sea,” that gives “the feeling of being immersed in the landscape”.

dezeen_Ermitage cabin by Septembre Architecture_6

The clients also asked that the building “make minimal impact on the surounding nature [so] no trees should be cut down.”

dezeen_Ermitage cabin by Septembre Architecture_4

The cabin is raised off the ground so it sits lightly on the plot and all of the materials used were transported to the site by boat as there are no roads on the island.

A pitched roof references the vernacular of local fishing huts and also increases the internal volume.

External walls are made from Swedish spruce that has been painted black. The floorboards are also spruce, while the internal walls and ceiling are clad in plywood.

A large sliding door leads from a small deck into the bedroom. With the door open, the deck effectively doubles the usable floor space.

In the bedroom, a mattress is placed at the back of a wooden platform that also acts as a surface for seating.

Long drawers on castors roll out from underneath the platform to provide storage.

The sauna is entered through a door at the side of the cabin and contains benches and a window looking out onto the forest.

Renzo Piano recently completed a tiny cabin designed as a self-sufficient hideaway for a single inhabitant at the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany, while other wooden cabins on Dezeen include an artists’ cabin built on the side of a hill in Nova Scotia and a wood-clad two-storey cabin in Austria.

Sauna Huginn&Muginn by AtelierFORTE

Sauna Huginn&Muginn by AtelierFORTE

Milan studio AtelierFORTE have built a sauna in the northern Italian countryside that has wings like a bird.

Sauna Huginn&Muginn by AtelierFORTE

Inspired by the Norse myth of raven messengers Huginn and Muninn, the structure is also raised above the ground on wooden legs.

A ladder leads up to two people at a time inside the sauna, while portholes frame views out across the surrounding landscape.

Other saunas we’ve featured include one that can be towed like a sledge and one surrounded by a herb gardenSee them both here.

Sauna Huginn&Muginn by AtelierFORTE

Here’s some more information from AtelierFORTE:

AtelierFORTE is glad to present the sauna Huginn&Muninn, inspired by the two ravens of Odin. The sauna, built in fir wood, accommodates two people. As the Scandinavian tradition it is powered by a wood stove.

The portholes on the walls, in this case, give an impressive view of hills around Piacenza, Italy.

From the project by Duilio Forte, Huginn&Muninn is built entirely by hand. AtelierFORTE manufactures outdoor saunas since 1994, and every sauna is unique, designed and created ad hoc.

Hugin and Muninn mean “thought” and “memory”. Those are the names of the two ravens of Odin. Every day he sends them flying over all the earth, and they come back and tell him everything they have seen and heard.

In the freezing winter months this wooden sauna on a Finnish island can be towed like a sledge over a frozen lake to find the right spot for a plunge pool.

Denizen Sauna by Denizen Works + Friends

London architects Denizen Works + Friends designed the mobile sauna on site and constructed it in just nine days using locally sourced timber and recycled windows.

The wood lining the hut’s interior had been stored for over twelve years in a disused boatshed while the owner tried unsuccessfully to gain permission to convert that into a sauna.

She was granted permission for this structure on the premise that it would be mobile.

When on dry land, detachable concrete feet anchor the building to the ground.

Denizen Sauna

The commission for the sauna came from a trip to Åland, in the archipelago between Sweden and Finland, during the summer of 2010.

Denizen Sauna by Denizen Works + Friends

In Åland, like most of Scandinavia, the sauna is one of the main social functions of the home. Our client had tried, unsuccessfully for 12 years, to obtain planning permission for a sauna within her disused boat-shed.

Denizen Sauna by Denizen Works + Friends

On leaving the island we set about coming up with a solution that could circumnavigate the planning issues. We decided on two possible solutions; one that put the sauna on a boat and the boat in the boat-shed and the other, a winter option, which put the sauna on a large-scale sledge and allowed the sauna to be towed onto the frozen waters surrounding the house during the winter months.

Denizen Sauna by Denizen Works + Friends

During the deliberations, our client’s son told the story of his grandfather building a winter sauna on runners for winter fun, so we erred on the side of family history.

The sauna was designed on site, using only sketches from a small notepad, and built by Denizen Works and friends during 9 hard days of toil in the summer of 2011.

The building is constructed from locally sourced timber, recycled windows and lined in the pine cladding our client had stored in her shed for the 12 years since the submission of her first planning application.

The single-storey building is named Spa Atrapa Árbol, which translates as Catch Tree Spa, because it wraps around a courtyard and tree.

A narrow skylight runs along the ceiling of a corridor connecting the sauna and hot tub rooms with a furnished living room.

Spa Atrapa Árbol by LAND Arquitectos

Spa Atrapa Árbol by LAND Arquitectos

Spa Atrapa Árbol by LAND Arquitectos

Spa Atrapa Árbol by LAND Arquitectos

Spa Atrapa Árbol by LAND Arquitectos

Spa Atrapa Árbol by LAND Arquitectos

Estrategias sustentables pasivas aplicadas:
