John Astbury and Kyuhyung Cho launch Fade bathroom collection

Milan 2014: Stockholm duo John Astbury and Kyuhyung Cho have designed a collection of vessels and furniture for the bathroom with softly rounded edges.

Fade collection by John Astbury and Kyuhyung Cho

The Fade collection by young designers John Astbury and Kyuhyung Cho consists of 13 pieces all derived from the same motif: a rounded shape that sits somewhere between square and a circle.

“The aim was the representation of transformation within the objects,” Kyuhyung Cho told Dezeen. “The process of shifting from one state to another was the inspiration.”

The family of products includes a low table, a mirror, and a collection of trays and vessels, all in greyish-blue tones.

The trays and vessels come in a range of sizes and each is made from parian clay, traditionally used in the slipcasting process when making pottery.

The clay was used for this collection to add “a weight and expectancy appropriate to ritual,” said the designers.

The ash table is formed from a tray-shaped top sat on four legs, while another tray with a circular copper mirror in the centre can be mounted on the wall.

The collection will be presented at the Ventura Lambrate design district in Milan from 8 to 13 April.

Faye Toogood “gets fat” with fourth Assemblage furniture collection

Milan 2014: the fourth iteration of British designer Faye Toogood‘s Assemblage collection will launch at the Project B Gallery in Milan on Tuesday.

Faye Toogood to launch Assemblage 4 furniture during Milan design week

Faye Toogood has continued to use the geometric elements typical of her Assemblage range for this collection. But in contrast to the angular feel of Assemblage 3, the feet on these pieces are rounded, drawing influence from her experiences of pregnancy and motherhood.

“I’ve got fat,” Toogood told Dezeen. “Gone are the angles, hard lines and dark colour schemes of previous collections in favour of voluptuousness and creaminess.”

Assemblage 4, titled Roly-Poly, includes a low four-legged chair, a higher dining chair and table, a sculptural daybed, and a reinterpretation of Toogood’s Element table.

Each piece is developed from a clay maquette and then crafted from fibreglass, more commonly used in boat production.

Soft tones of cream, beige and white are reminiscent of faded injection-moulded Eames chairs.

Accompanying the furniture, the hand-woven Play tapestry and yarn throws designed for the chair and day bed explore the collection’s geometric themes in a different material.

“My new collection reflects my journey of becoming a mother and seeing the world through the eyes of a child,” said Toogood.

Toogood will show the furniture at Project B Gallery, Via Maroncelli 7, in Milan from 8 to 13 April.

Coquille Sofa by Markus Johansson resembles the curved form of a shell

Milan 2014: this sofa by Swedish designer Markus Johansson echoes the curves and ripples of a shell and will launch at this year’s Salone Satellite in Milan (+ slideshow).

Coquille sofa by Markus Johansson

Markus Johansson named the Coquille Sofa after the French word for “shell”, which is often associated with a scallop shape.

Coquille sofa by Markus Johansson

“I toyed with inspiration found among mussels and shells, and I’ve been working with different levels of softness and hardness to render Coquille as comfortable as possible,” he explained.

The designer attached curved pieces of polyether foam to the wooden frame to make the ribs around the base and back.

Layers of soft padding were added on top, creating gently rippled contours like the exterior of a shell.

The sofa is upholstered in a light grey fabric and patterned by the shadows that fall across the surface of the undulating form.

It will be displayed at Salone Satellite, part of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile taking place next week from 8 to 13 April.

Balloon Chair by h220430 appears to float above the ground

Balloon Chair by h220430

Milan 2014: Japanese studio h220430 has created a chair that looks like it is held in mid-air by balloons, which will go on show at Ventura Lambrate in Milan on Tuesday.

Balloon Chair by h220430

A follow-up to the Balloon Bench designed by h220430 in 2011, the Balloon Chair appears to by suspended beneath ten helium balloons.

The chair aims to recreate the feeling that Pascal, the protagonist of 1950s film Le Ballon Rouge, has when a cluster of balloons carried him over Paris, rescuing him from a group of bullies.

Balloon Chair by h220430

Whereas the bench was suspended from four anchor points in a ceiling to maintain the illusion of flight, the chair fixes to a wall.

The leather-covered seat is made from fibre-reinforced plastic, steel and urethane, while the balloons are made from fibre-reinforced plastic and cord, meaning they cannot be deflated.

The designers will be showing the Balloon Chair at Ventura Lambrate from 8 to 12 April, during Milan’s design week.

Zanocchi & Starke combine desktop bookend and battery-powered lamp

Milan 2014: part bookend and part light source, the Ludovica by Italian design studio Zanocchi & Starke combines two pieces of desktop furniture in one minimal package (+ slideshow).

Zanocchi & Starke combine desktop bookcase and battery-powered lamp

The Ludovica by Zanocchi & Starke comes in two parts. The first is an orange aluminium frame, which on its own serves as a colourful bookend.

One side of the frame slopes from top to bottom giving it a distinctive D-shape. The slope can be used as additional surface for stacking hardcovers.

Zanocchi & Starke combine desktop bookcase and battery-powered lamp

The second section is a re-chargeable battery powered light encased inside an opaque white plastic box. “We had the inspiration when we lived in Rio de Janeiro,” explained the designers.

Zanocchi & Starke combine desktop bookcase and battery-powered lamp

“We had an empty house with a library full of books. So we thought about something that could keep the books in order and at the same time ensure a more comfortable ambience.”

Zanocchi & Starke combine desktop bookcase and battery-powered lamp

The shape of the light mimics that of the frame, allowing it to be wedged inside the aluminium element. Books can then be neatly arranged in the gap below. Alternatively, it can be used as a standalone light source with four hours worth of battery life.

To recharge the light a USB port is hidden on the underside of the opaque box, which can then be plugged into a computer via the matching orange cable.

Zanocchi & Starke will be showcasing the Ludovica at the Tortona Around Design exhibition, Via Savona 53, during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan next week.

On the Rock vessels by Lee Broom to launch at Milan dinner party

Milan 2014: London designer Lee Broom will launch these glass and marble vessels during a dinner party in the window of a Milanese design boutique next week.

On the Rock vessels by Lee Broom

Lee Broom‘s On the Rock wine and champagne glasses feature crystal bowls perched on top of Carrera marble bases.

“Fusing the delicate crystal with the heavy marble base plays with the idea of balance – both structurally and through the contrasting materials,” said Broom.

The surfaces of both materials are curved where they meet, so the glass looks like it could topple off.

The champagne coupe has a wider and flatter cup than the wine glass, as well as a taller, thinner stem.

The collection will be launched during the dinner at Spazio Pontaccio, Via Pontaccio 18, in Milan’s Brera district on 8 April, before the showroom opens to the public the day after.
