On the Rock vessels by Lee Broom to launch at Milan dinner party

Milan 2014: London designer Lee Broom will launch these glass and marble vessels during a dinner party in the window of a Milanese design boutique next week.

Lee Broom‘s On the Rock wine and champagne glasses feature crystal bowls perched on top of Carrera marble bases.

“Fusing the delicate crystal with the heavy marble base plays with the idea of balance – both structurally and through the contrasting materials,” said Broom.

The surfaces of both materials are curved where they meet, so the glass looks like it could topple off.

The champagne coupe has a wider and flatter cup than the wine glass, as well as a taller, thinner stem.

The collection will be launched during the dinner at Spazio Pontaccio, Via Pontaccio 18, in Milan’s Brera district on 8 April, before the showroom opens to the public the day after.

A limited series of 30 wine glasses and 30 champagne glasses will also be available to buy from a pop-up shop at the boutique, along with a selection of Broom’s designs.

“Street culture is synonymous with east London” – Lee Broom

East London designer Lee Broom talks about making lamps from crystal decanters and how east London’s history and street culture make it an important creative hub in this movie we filmed for the Stepney Green Design Collection.

Lee Broom on his Decanterlight for the Stepney Green Design Collection

Speaking about working in east London, Broom says “it’s important for a designer or creative to be based in an area around other creative people”.

Lee Broom on his Decanterlight for the Stepney Green Design Collection

“It’s not just about people feeding on other people’s creativity,” he continues, “but from a business perspective it’s important that we’re all in a hub so if people in the industry want to visit you, they can also visit other creatives in the area as well.”

Lee Broom on his Decanterlight for the Stepney Green Design Collection

He also describes how east London has “that mix of history and street culture that gives British design its eclecticism”.

Lee Broom on his Decanterlight for the Stepney Green Design Collection

Broom contributed one of his Decanterlights to the collection, and in the movie he talks about buying the vessels used to make the lights “from antique markets, flea markets and even eBay”.

The lights were first created in 2010 for Coquine bar and restaurant in west London that he designed.

Crystal Bulb Shop by Lee Broom

London Design Festival: Hackney designer Lee Broom has transformed his studio into an old-fashioned grocery store for the London Design Festival (+ interactive image). Broom spoke to Dezeen about the installation and we’ve annotated a photo of the space with his insights above.

Crystal Bulb Shop by Lee Broom

“We’re just showing one product, the Crystal Bulb, so I felt like I needed to present it in lots of alternative ways,” Broom told Dezeen.

Two hundred of the bulbs are presented in crates, cabinets, weighing scales and jars, as well as hanging from the ceiling and reflected in mirrors.

The hand-blown, cut-glass bulbs were inspired by whisky decanters and are made by British firm Cumbria Crystal. Read more about them in our earlier story. The Crystal Bulbs are also available at our pop-up shop Dezeen Super Store at 38 Monmouth Street until 30 September.

The panelling is recycled from his Public House installation styled like an English pub in Milan earlier this year, where the Crystal Bulb was unveiled for the first time.

Here’s some information from Broom:

Lee Broom Takes Centre Stage at British Business Embassy During Olympic Games

This summer, acclaimed product and interior designer, Lee Broom curates a central room in the Lancaster House where the British Business Embassy will host global influential business leaders during the Olympic and Paralympic games.

Broom is one of an exclusive number of respected British designers, including Terrance Conran and Ross Lovegrove, invited to atmospherically enhance the British Business Embassy, which will take place at London’s historic Lancaster House. The magnificent 19th century house will be transformed to showcase modern art and design highlighting the talent of British or British-trained designers, photographers, furniture makers and sculptors.

The Gold Room by Lee Broom

The Gold Room by Lee Broom is the only room dedicated solely to one designer at Lancaster House. The historic room juxtaposed against Broom’s modern, contemporary pieces exemplifies the designer’s ethos of connecting the past and the future, the traditional and contemporary.

Included in the room are 14 pieces from Salon, an upholstered furniture collection in soft hues contrasted and accentuated with modern stud detailing. The room will feature several products from the range including armchairs, two-seater sofas, drum-seats, dining chairs and footstools. Further pieces included are: Parqlife, a side table and table in walnut veneer with complementing brass accents. Parquetry coffee table and lamp crafted from wenge, oak and walnut wood with blue accent stripe and panels. Carpetry console and pendant, which are from Broom’s first collection and feature pieces in satin lacquered blue with blue and beige carpet.

The Gold Room by Lee Broom

Demonstrating the designer’s commitment to his country’s heritage, all the pieces have been designed in Broom’s east-end studio and manufactured in the UK.

Broom says, “it is an honour to be invited to participate in this unique event, especially when the spotlight is on London during the Olympic and Paralympic games. Championing British design and manufacturing is something I feel passionate about and this centrepiece backs the best of UK creativity – it’s a hugely valuable opportunity.”

The Gold Room by Lee Broom

The British Business Embassy, developed by the UK trade & investment (UKTI) is the centrepiece of the government’s international business legacy programme. It will see over 3,000 UK and international business leaders come together for an ambitious series of global, sector and country summits. The embassy will stage a host of world-class speakers including Eric Schmidt, Sir Jonathan Ive and Howard Stringer.

Design leader and UKTI business ambassador, Sir John Sorrell, alongside Diana Yakeley, president of the British Institute of Interior Design have overseen the selection and creation of a total of 18 rooms at the British Business Embassy which will highlight British design talent. Other designers and contributors include Paul Smith for Conran and The Rug Company, BarberOsgerby, Jasper Morrison for Vitra, Sir Terrance Conran and Foster & Partners for Lumina.

Launch Of Lee Broom, Public House
Salone Del Mobile 2012
17 – 22 April 2012

This month, the critically acclaimed British designer, Lee Broom, will launch his first, solo exhibition in Milan during the Salone del Mobile. Entitled Public House, the show will mark the fifth anniversary of the Lee Broom brand, showcasing a selection of Broom’s hero pieces in one curated space, for the first time.

Public House by Lee Broom

Inspired by the age-old institution of the British pub, with a multi-dimensional, surreal twist, Public House will bring a truly British experience to the Ventura Lambrate design district. Reflecting a common theme in Broom’s work, materials used within the exhibition will be of authentic British origin, reclaimed from old pubs. Deconstructed oak panelling, etched glass and an ornate wooden bar will act as eclectic, statement backdrops to Broom’s British designed and manufactured collections.

This cultural amalgam of old meets new is reflected in Broom’s collections on show. New pieces, including a striking light and exciting new editions to existing products, will complement Broom’s core collections, showcasing the scope and variety of his work.

Public House by Lee Broom

Public House will also complement the launch of Broom’s collaboration with renowned international Scotch whisky, Ballantine’s 12 Year Old. Broom has designed an exclusive serving ritual, influenced by vintage crystal whisky decanters, with a very modern twist, to be launched at the exhibition.

“I am very excited to be exhibiting for the first time in Milan. I wanted to showcase my work in a quintessential British environment, creating an experience for visitors which they could usually only experience in the UK.” – Lee Broom

LAUNCH OF CRYSTAL BULB, LEE BROOM
SALONE DEL MOBILE 2012

This April, critically acclaimed British product and interior designer, Lee Broom, will launch Crystal Bulb as part of his first, solo exhibition in Milan during the Salone Del Mobile – Lee Broom Public House.

Taking inspiration from the delicate craftsmanship of crystal cutting, and following Broom’s hugely successful Decanterlight, Crystal Bulb combines industrial influences with decorative qualities, transforming the everyday light bulb into an ornamental light fitting.

Individually hand blown, each Crystal Bulb is cut with the decanter pattern and etched with a Lee Broom logo. Broom has collaborated with experts at Cumbria Crystal in the UK, keeping true to his signature design ethos of working with British craftsmen.

Crystal Bulb casts beautiful shadows across a room. It is designed to fit any standard ceiling, wall or lamp fitting, and can be hung solo or in clusters, as well as used with a light shade to create enchanting light effects.

On designing the Crystal Bulb Lee Broom says “I wanted to create a light bulb as a more accessible design product and incorporating cut crystal seemed the most logical design as this has become a familiar style within my product ranges.”

Crystal Bulb complements Broom’s Public House exhibition at the Salone Del Mobile. Inspired by the age-old institution of the British pub, with a multi-dimensional, surreal twist, Public House will bring a truly British experience to the Ventura Lambrate Design district. In collaboration with renowned international Scotch whisky, Ballantine’s 12 Year Old, Broom will also showcase an exclusive serving ritual, influenced by vintage crystal whisky decanters.

Here is some more information from Lee Broom:

This year, award-winning British designer Lee Broom launches his fifth collection at the London Design Festival, a dramatic debut upholstery collection entitled ‘Salon’.

Inspired by the curvaceous lines of 1930s upholstery, with a hint of fashion fetishism, the new collection features soft silhouettes contrasted and accentuated with modern stud detailing. True to Broom’s signature style and ethos, the polished collection has been created using traditional British craftsmanship.

Salon by Lee Broom

The Salon collection includes six pieces – an armchair, dining chair, sofa, footstool, drum seat and cushions. Available in a refined palette of beiges, greys, blacks and whites, there is also a choice of wool, velvet and leather finishes.

In upholstery, studding is traditionally used to hide elements of the manufacturing process. For Salon, however, Broom has chosen to focus on this detail and exaggerate it, creating an edgy modern look, which echoes similar finishing found in luxury fashion accessories and punk rock couture. The hand finished and hand-applied studs, available in faceted gold or gun metal, are softened by the fluidity of the furniture; while complementary studding in the same colour as the fabrics creates a shadow effect in the relief.

Salon by Lee Broom

Designing an upholstery collection was a natural progression for Broom. Inspired by his theatre and fashion background and an experience of designing bespoke furniture pieces for interiors projects, Broom thrives on the direct involvement of working side-by-side with his manufacturers to produce hand-finished pieces.

“I have wanted to create an upholstery collection for a while; my experience in fashion taught me the importance of beautiful tailoring in design and working with British manufacturers allowed me to be entirely hands-on in the design process. The collection has been brought to life through a combination of traditional techniques and contemporary finishes.” Lee Broom

Topman personal shopping suite by Lee Broom

The information below is from Lee Broom:

Critically acclaimed interior and product designer, Lee Broom has curated and designed a new Personal Shopping Suite for TOPMAN‟s Oxford Street flagship store. The state of the art suite launches on May 24th 2011 to meet with the growing demand for men‟s personal shopping appointments.

Having previously worked with the legendary fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, Lee Broom was able to apply his fashion know-how to create a new shopping experience, which echoes the mood of a contemporary gentleman’s club. The space features signature pieces from his own collection, such as The One Light Only collection which dresses the ceiling, and the Cathode Console which acts as the neon lined concierge desk.

Sumptuous half-moon booths wrap around Lee’s hexagonal parquetry coffee tables, with traditional herringbone patterns lining the walls.

The clothes are presented in non-conventional ways through the use of trompe l’oeil printed wall panels, which can be easily adapted for seasonal changes. Materials such as wenge, oak and walnut feature throughout, with a hint of retro in the colour palette through the use of rich teals and earthy browns, with decadent gold highlights adding an exclusive air.

“Coming from a fashion background, it’s been exciting to work with TOPMAN to create their personal shopping suite. The suite has a grand, yet youthful, feel to it as it was important to ensure that men felt comfortable within the space. This space was designed to engage, inspire and give men a personal chill-out zone as they step through their shopping choices.” Lee Broom

The welcoming space features a Microsoft innovation and XBOX gaming area as well as three bespoke consultation areas complete with an Asahi „honesty bar‟ and a changing exhibition space which will launch with artworks from Scream and Whisper Galleries, owned by Tyrone Wood.

The Personal Shoppers will offer a revolutionary new service giving slick sartorial advice within the TOPMAN environment. The service which will be based on the new second floor of the Oxford Circus Flagship, will aim to simplify the time spent shopping and provide maximum choice to the client through a simple appointment menu which includes a 30 minute Express service, a 1 hour Edit for key style updates and a 2 hour ultimate wardrobe over-haul with the Experience session.

“While the trend for Personal Shopping amongst men has almost exclusively been at designer boutique and department store level, the current growth in interest in men’s fashion – at a high street level – has proven the need to invest in the launch of a dedicated Personal Shopping service at TOPMAN. We will offer all types of guys access to the latest trends and styles to suit their particular needs – totally complimentary with no obligation to buy…” Giles Farnham, Personal Shopping Assistant Manager – TOPMAN Oxford Circus
