Product news: design studio Kawamura-Ganjavian has introduced a compact version of the Ostrich Pillow that only wraps around the eyes and ears.
Designed for napping on the go, the Ostrich Pillow Light by Kawamura-Ganjavian is a smaller edition of the original pillow, which covers the entire head.
Filled with silicon-coated micro-beads to remove background noise, the wearer can slip the pillow over their eyes and ears to sleep.
The pillow can be adjusted to fit any head size by tightening or loosening the elastic cords that surround it.
When not in use, the pillow can be worn around the neck as a chunky ribbed snood. It comes in grey with a red or blue lining.
The original Ostrich Pillow was launched as a crowd-funded project a year ago. The designers have also created the Ostrich Pillow Junior for children aged six and over.

Product news: design studio Kawamura-Ganjavian is now producing a smaller version of its squishy headpiece for napping on the go for children (+ slideshow).
Spain and Switzerland-based studio Kawamura-Ganjavian have scaled down their Ostrich Pillows for ad-hoc snoozing to be suitable for children aged six and over.
Originally funded on Kickstarter, the padded grey helmets are designed to make sleeping at the desk, on long car journeys or in waiting rooms more comfortable – find out more in our previous story.
The design has been modified for kids so the whole face is visible through the hole in the front, compared to just the nose and mouth on the adult model.
Patterned fabric now lines the inside, visible through the two hand holes on either side.
When we published the adult version, our commenters called it “a pickpocket’s dream” and compared it to a “garlic clove” and a “locust head”.
Kawamura-Ganjavian has also designed a padded reading room at a bookshop in Lausanne and screens made of sticks covered in Velcro for an exhibition in Milan.

This squishy headgear by Spain and Switzerland-based studio Kawamura Ganjavian creates the perfect conditions for a power nap at your desk, at the airport or in the library (+ movie).
The Ostrich Pillow’s padded sides allow the wearer to take a warm and comfortable nap. The eyes and ears are covered while pockets provide a cosy space for hands when leaning on a desk.
“Seeing as we all spend more and more time at work, in front of a computer screen or in transit, we thought why not create something that helps us nap, disconnect and dream?” explains designer Ali Ganjavian in the movie.
The studio has attracted hundreds of backers so far on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter. Ganjavian and co-founder Key Portilla Kawamura are also founding members of the multidisciplinary creative platform Studio Banana.

A ring of shelves encloses a padded reading room at this bookshop by designers Kawamura-Ganjavian.
The Librairie La Fontaine is located in the SANAA-designed Rolex Learning Center on the campus of science and technology university EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland.
Kawamura-Ganjavian created curling bookcases in response to SANAA’s building, which features undulating floors and ceilings pierced by cylindrical atriums.
Each shelving enclave has a different size and configuration, with some encircling banks of seating and others wrapping more concentric shelves.
Little book stands and trestle tables are also dotted around the store.

Librairie La Fontaine is a historic bookstore inside the EPFL campus in Lausanne. Its venue moved in 2010 to the new Rolex Learning Centre designed by SANAA architects.
Taking into consideration the architectural language of the host building the bookstore is organised around 5 “pods” that articulate thematic categories. All pods are slightly different from each other, housing books or magazines on their outside and inside, and even a cozy reading cocoon.
The space moves away from a conventional aisle-and-bookshelf rigidity and creates a fluid environment with a rich variety of spaces where the customers feel at ease to explore and roam idly. The pods are as well the subtle source of indirect illumination. The project is enhanced with pieces of furniture (tables, benches, bookstands, dustbins, desk dividers) designed by the authors.
The complex geometry of the pods was made possible thanks to a smart combination of state-of-the-art numeric control manufacturing techniques and advanced Swiss cabinet-making skills.

These screens made of sticks covered in Velcro by designers Kawamura-Ganjavian will be used to divide exhibition stands at Designjunction in Milan next month.
Called StickingSticks, the product was designed in collaboration with hook-and-loop fastening company Velcro and is now being developed by British design brand Modus.
Designjunction will take place 12-17 April as part of Tortona Design Week and will showcase British designers and manufacturers.

Brand new stickingsticks will feature throughout the space to create a striking environment.
Stickingsticks is a modular partition system, currently being developed by Modus, consisting of a kit of different length tubes wrapped in strips of Velcro.
The products flexibility allows the tubes to connect through the use of Velcro making it quick and easy to create room divisions.
Stickingsticks is designed in collaboration with Velcro and will pre launch in Milan with Modus and Designjunction.
