Music on the Moov

MoovBox is a portable synthesizer that aims to revolutionize music listening by introducing an active approach to mixing audio while on the move. Like the iconic Moog, the MoovBox makes it easy to modify notes- simply adjust any combination of  the 7 knobs by rolling or sliding. Better yet, users can compose or add layers of their favorite string, wind or percussion instrument by using natural gestures. Need some guitar? Use your fingers to play like a fret board! Horns? Key and blow like a trumpet!

The Sound of Sight

The Synaesynth is a twist on the synthesizer that transforms the colors of your life into audible sound. The combination hardware/software translates imagery directly into music by pulling color data from a video feed, allowing the user to determine the input. The result is an interesting simulated “synaesthetic” experience! See it in action ->

A Guitarist Must Have

The PIK stool combines the joy of playing music with the elegance and comfort of modern furniture design. Targeted specifically at acoustic guitar players, the aim was to design a guitar amp that captures the essence of acoustic playing environments. Aesthetically, the stool allows viewers of the performance to focus solely on the musician without being distracted by other clutter on stage! Check out the vid for the full experience!

Fool-proof Violin

Half the work in learning to play the violin is maintaining the correct posture while keeping a stable grip on the right finger positions. The WAVE electric violin uses a combination of tactile, braille-like indicators to train accurate finger positioning and a built-in accelerometer to ensure the musician is in proper form. If the violin senses the player is in the wrong position it will automatically shut off, forcing the musician to readjust. Be a virtuoso in half the time!

Musical Colors

Imagine generating sound using colors instead of any conventional instrument! The Audible Colors project does just that! It is an audio-visual instrument where sound is generated based on the color detected by a web cam connected to a computer. Musical notes correspond to certain colors (red, green and blue). And just like the color wheel, when you mix the primary colors, the secondary colors produce different notes.

Here are some key features:

  • The size of the colors influences the volume and frequency of the notes played.
  • Color detection and sound generation were created and are controlled using Processing code.
  • The system of audible color is based on a marriage between basic color and music theories.
  • The colors of red, blue, and green are the visual foundation for color-mixing and the music notes A, D, and F are the base triad that corresponds to the colors.
  • The secondary colors (colors made when the foundational three are mixed) of purple, teal and brown are tuned to the musical triad C, E and G.
  • The visual of the mixing of red, blue and/or green mirrors the aural output of combined notes.
  • The ‘painting’ aspect is not restricted to water droplets from a pipette.
  • Numerous experiments were performed using substances such as acrylic paint, food dye in milk with soap, and ordinary household objects.
  • Each investigation created a new type of fun and easy gestural music making.
