Designed in Hackney: Batemans Row by Theis and Khan Architects

Designed in Hackney: Batemans Row by Theis and Khan Architects

Designed in Hackney: today’s instalment in our Designed in Hackney series is Bateman’s Row, a Stirling Prize-nominated home and studio that architects Theis and Khan designed for themselves in Shoreditch.

Constructed from two contrasting varieties of brickwork, the five-storey-high building also contains a set of offices on it’s lower floors and four apartments upstairs.

We first featured the building when it was completed in 2009, then again when it was nominated for the Stirling Prize in 2010. The architects have since put the apartment up for sale, but continue to work from the studio. Read more about the project here.

Husband and wife Patrick Theis and Soraya Khan founded Theis and Khan Architects in 1995 and have worked on a number of projects in London and around the UK, including the renovation of a multi-faith church. See all our stories about them here.

Their studio is located in the southern end of Hackney, between Shoreditch High Street and Curtain Road.

Designed in Hackney: Plumen 001 by Samuel Wilkinson and Hulger

Plumen 001 by Hulger and Samuel Wilkinson in Hackney

Designed in Hackney: it’s day two of our Designed in Hackney showcase and the award-winning Plumen 001 designer light bulb by Samuel Wilkinson for Hulger is our featured project from the borough today.

We first showed Hulger’s prototypes of the low-energy CFL bulb back in 2007 and the product was launched in September 2010. It went on to win Design of the Year the following summer, when we recorded an interview with the designers that you can watch on Dezeen Screen. This project also features in our Dezeen Book of Ideas and you can read more about it here.

Wilkinson founded his own industrial design studio in 2007 and his other projects include a table with legs that are sharpened like pencils, a miniature garden that works like a living Tamagotchi and a large metal tree in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

He has a studio on Hackney Road in the south of the borough, close to the city farm and flower market, and Hulger’s office is just outside Hackney in the neighbouring London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Designed in Hackney: 2012 Olympic Torch by BarberOsgerby

Designed in Hackney: we’re kicking off our new Designed in Hackney initiative today, showcasing world-class architecture and design created in the borough that’s home to Dezeen’s offices and one of the five host boroughs for the London 2012 Olympic Games. First up is the London 2012 Olympic Torch by BarberOsgerby.

Designed in Hackney: London 2012 Olympic Torch

The triangular torch will be made from a golden aluminium alloy and perforated by 8000 circular holes representing the 8000 torch-bearers to take part in the Olympic relay, which will pass through Hackney on Saturday 21 July 2012. The design was first unveiled in June last year – read more in our earlier story.

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby founded their studio in 1996 after graduating from a Masters in architecture at the Royal College of Art in London. The Loop Table produced by Isokon was their first piece to go into production, appearing as a continuous loop of plywood that hovers off the ground at one end. The pair have since worked with international brands including Vitra, Established & Sons, Flos, Cappellini and Sony. See all our stories about their work here.

Their office is based in Charlotte Road, Shoreditch EC2.
