The T-Block Effect

Watches are to men as diamonds are to women; both count as the number one fashion accessory and are timeless. Innovation is of essence and creative ways of telling time is a novelty factor. Beyond doubt, complications and mechanical watches are the epitome of technicalities, however due credit has to be given to path-breaking manufactures like the T-Block Watch. Designed to dress the wrist, the most challenging part is to resist the linear display of time!

The watch is inspired by the ‘less is more’ styling and is made using a tough polyurethane case and seamless matching strap. There is a very unique way to read the time, which is showcased via the embedded LEDs on the watch face. The dial houses an array of attractive lights that dim in sleep mode. However, if you want to know the date or time, simply hit one of the buttons and the lights appear, revealing it.

Ask a watch designer and they will tell you that designing it is not as easy as drawing a strap and affixing a dial; there is a scientific and holistic approach to it. Research and development are the backbone of this endeavor and only once everything is in sync, can it be manufactured. The same process applies to the T-Block Watch, which stems from the lineage of the Classic, Zero A and Zero B watches from TIME-IT. After the successful invention of the ‘linear time reading system’, the process was integrated in this iconic watch.

The TIME-IT folks say that it took several years of R&D by a devoted team of technicians, engineers and designers to realize this studio. Founders Ramon Groen and Michaël Mourgue laid the groundwork of creating a watch never seen before: An LED display with linear time reading system that could change perception of time!

Key features:

  • Battery: CR2450
  • Water Resistance: 3-ATM
  • Function: Time, calendar display
  • Low power consumption
  • Automatic sleep function after 5 seconds
  • Materials: case and strap made from polyurethane

A Pinch of Life

Salt – the one ingredient that can make or break your signature dish! Understandably, this is why the Pinch was the first product ever launched via Kickstarter. It is the drama and experience of adding ‘a pinch of salt’ to the dish that makes it exciting. In its conceptual stage, we loved and supported the Pinch; now when it’s the real deal…we want to share its story with you.

Inspired by the use of coarse and flaky seas salts that chefs use while cooking, designer Craighton Berman wanted to bring these amazing salts and the visceral experience of pinching to the dining table, and so he designed the Pinch.

The salt cellar holds a portion of sea salt, and the top sphere is a traditional pepper shaker, which acts as a cover for the cellar when not in use. The act of ‘closing’ Pinch results in the satisfying slide of two pieces of ceramic against each other—reminiscent of using a ceramic mortar and pestle.

Apparently salts are kept in open containers called “salt pigs” and are placed next to the stove. While cooking, portions of salt are “pinched” and applied liberally to the food. This entire drama of adding salt to food gave birth to the Pinch. Designed in Chicago, made in Thailand, this unique salt and pepper holder has its roots tracing back to a design competition in Chicago, circa 2007. Ever since its October 2010 Kickstarter success, the Pinch has been an object of desire, a classy product that you want spicing-up your dining table.

Creative Calculation With Sharpened Pencils

Can creative output really be measured? Yes, the pencil shavings collected in the Sharpner Jar tell the story of your efforts, even if there’s nothing final to show for the time spent. This measurable “creative data” proves to colleagues, employers, friends, family, and—most importantly—yourself that work was accomplished, useful or not.

Designer: Craighton Berman [ Buy it Here ]

How is your boss going to know that you spent most of the day working and not just surfing the Internet? Moreover, can creative output really be measured? If we go by designer Craighton Berman’s vision, then the Sharpener Jar is what you need to quantify creative output. A jar full of pencil shavings at the end of the day visually demonstrates your labor to yourself and those around you.

When the jar fills to the top with pencil shavings, it can be sealed and archived for future reference. Imagine the impact of a dozen sealed jars of your efforts displayed prominently on your bookshelf!

When I asked Craighton what he led him to create this ingenious jar, he said that the idea grew out of an experience teaching a design sketching class. “While critiquing a student’s work it was evident there was a lot of effort, but not much result, the idea of measuring creative effort by saving pencil shavings emerged in my mind.”

There’s a lot of irony in the fact that creativity is being hailed as a ‘business tool’, when it’s so inherently inefficient, unpredictable, and un-measurable! In short, the Sharpener Jar also doubles as a useful desktop accessory for any artist, designer, illustrator, writer, or regular person who wants to sharpen a pencil.

The X – Pen Magic

For a person who gets inspired by fine writing instruments, it should be easy for me to articulate my opinion about the X – Pen, but for some odd reason I have a block! I think it stems from the fact that I equated well designed pens with the high-end brands. The X – Pen has forced me to rewire my thinking & take into consideration that lovingly crafted pens can be equally inspiring, distinguished and exude the same amount of confidence that a Porsche Design TecFlex or a Mont Blanc can!

Designer Arash Malek fell in love with the Pilot Razor Point and Fineliner when he was studying in design school. His brother Mehdi (engineering background) and he were equally passionate about the process of making things and often delved into the DIY world. The love of tools and drive for making things, led to the idea of creating a pen the celebrated the awesomeness of the plastic felt tip Pilot Pen. The idea was to integrate fun and functionality, while presenting an affordable product.

The brothers decided to craft a pen that incorporated everything they cared about. As Arash explains, “The hex on the cap is a tool used to refill the pen. The process of refilling the pen is an exploration of disassembly and assembly. The magnetic cap was a feature we needed to tell apart ferrous from non-ferrous metals while shopping for metal, it also makes mounting the cap incredibly fun.”

Their excitement regarding the X – Pen is infectious! If I were to come up with a fun-DIY-pen, then this would probably be it!

The X – Pen is essentially a machined 6061 aircraft grade aluminium felt tip pen that is powered by both the Pilot razor point & the Pilot Fineliner. The pen hopes to excite and engage designers, architects, engineers, and do it yourselfers; but quite honestly I think anyone with passion for pens will love to add this to their collection!

Features:

  • The cap has a hex machined on it so that you can open the hex set screw used to secure in the ink. The process of refilling the ink is as exciting as building a model car or airplane!
  • Aircraft grade aluminium 6061.
  • X – Pen uses a standard off the shelf hex set screw (easy to replace in case it gets lost) the pen looks great with or without a nickel plate setscrew.
  • Unibody design, nothing to get loose while using the pen.
  • Magnetic cap secures effortlessly on pen, is fun to play with, makes grabbing paper clips or push pins a breeze.
  • 0.43” diameter (most comfortable diameter according to experiments and feedback from users).
  • 4” overall length fits in your pockets unnoticed.

Time Till Now

Communication is the key element in watch design and the Till Watch fulfils this norm by speaking to you visually. Exemplifying the relationship between now and then, this cool time-telling machine doesn’t believe in cold numbers. For example, its not 10:50, it’s “Ten Till Ten.” If you ask me, I’d like my watch to read… ’Till death do us apart!

Available in Black and Brushed Stainless Steel at CKIE.
