Art tour in Nora her home

Bloesem Living | Art at La fete

Walking up the stairs in Nora's Amsterdam apartment is like walking into an art gallery. The home of this art director, mom and crafter is full with modern and contemporary art just the way I would like to see it in my own home.

Nora and I met via Bloesem Kids … when she wrote me about her love craft projects … for the last year she has contributed many amazing and fun DIY tutorials. Last summer when I was in Amsterdam Nora and I met and she was just as wonderful as I had imagined her.

But let's talk art / prints and where to find these kind of things online … Nora gave me some info per picture and I hope you will find the info useful.

Image above you see on top art by Dutch painter Bob Bonies and Nora bought it on the Dutch Craigs List called 'Marktplaats'. Below is a picture of Rome made by Nora her own mom who is a very creative and artistic person herself Nora told me.

Take a little tour with me after the break.

Bloesem Living | Art at La fete

Left: Hiroshi Harada at Gallery De Vierde Dimensie.

Right side: Lynn Forbes from the UK … Nora bought it on Ebay

The little truck is by Han Bennink  at Gallery Kunst op Kamers.

Bloesem Living | Art at La fete

On the far left art above by Nora's mom and below from her father … yes Nora is lucky to have inherited some creative genes.

The famous 'Kannen' are by  Klaas Gubbels which she found via Steen Drukkerij in Amsterdam. And on the right is a woodprint by Arjenne Fakkel.

Bloesem Living | Art at La fete

Left top art is by  Robert and Jeanne Schaap but unfortunately not more info to give … The little frame below is by Andreas Brandt  and Nora and her husband bought it a small gallery Spielvogel  in Berlin. The print with green squares is by Gunther Tuzina and Nora got it via eBay. But Slewe in the Netherlands has some of artwork in their collection too.

LaFete_home_art_hallway_red

Just a vintage barometer Nora got form a family member but thought painting it red would make more sencse … I love how it turned out, you too?

Bloesem Living | Art at La fete

Two by Noël Drieghe that they bought in Antwerp at gallery "kunst in huis". Below 'the table' is an illustration by Nora's mom again .. inspired by the work of Klaas Gubbels.

And next to it is a lino=cut called " het thee builtje" van Beatrice Kluivers uit '78.

Bloesem Living | Art at La fete

Above again Bob Bonies. and below

And Nora's list of artist she admires goes on … here just some more names and links to get you inspired too… Károly Keserü , Ko Oosterkerk and Paul van Rijswijk at Luycks Gallery.

hanks you Nora for sharing all the info with us!! You definitely helped me to get started and hopefully soon I will be able to hang some artwork in our home.

What kind of art do you have in your home? Do you have any favorites. Please leave a comment and share your ideas, tips and suggestions with us!

Art in Your Home :: Barb Blair

BB1

Barb Blair from Knack Studios.

A: Art means to me…Life is art to me. Everything around me speaks to some form of art whether it is a child's finger painting, collage work by a favorite local artist, jewelry, furniture, flowers, street signs, clothing, or food…..inspiration and color is around at all times.

R: Reading books, blogs, or magazines…I don't have much time for reading unfortunately….and because I am one of those "once I pick up a book I can't put it down " people ….it can be dangerous! Everything around me could be on fire and I would not know it since I am so engrossed in my reading! However, I am trying to read through the Hunger Games series since my kids are reading them right now. My favorite magazine splurge every month is Living etc.and I pour through every single page….on multiple occasions. There are some really great online mags that I love too like Sweet Paul, Kinfolk, Anthology, and Pure Green. As far as blogs go….when I have the luxury of blog surfing there are so many that I love to peruse especially in the home design field, but I find myself keeping up with different bloggers through their facebook pages and posts, and really love having real interactions with people.

BB2

T: Trends I see in art or graphic design are…There is a major geometric crush going on in the graphics arena right now and I really love it!

A: Artists I admire are…children……their artwork is so pure… and I admire the simplicity and beauty in it all.

N: Never will I…eat a mushroom. :}

BB3

D: Dreams for my own work are…to see it continue to grow organically and always be original and fresh.

P: Projects I am currently working on are…Well, I am currently in the process of working on a book with Chronicle Books that will be released in the Spring of 2013!! I am super excited about that little endeavor. I am also working on a brand new Spring/Summer collection for a collaborative show here locally as well as custom pieces for clients.

R: Relaxing I do at/when/if…I love to relax at home with my family and we are notorious for making lots of popcorn and indulging in movies and frivolity of all sorts.

BB4

I: Interesting art focused websites I like are…The Old Try is a recent love of mine. A really cute southern couple making great southern inspired art and prints.

N: New in my home is…a little 4 lb puppy named "Roo." She is delicious.

T: Tomorrow I would like to go to…Ireland…….but seriously I could handle a trip to the flea market and creating in the studio.

BB5

S: Studio, my studio is…Rad. I love the light, the space, and the furniture goodies inside…..it is such a privilege to be able to create there.

Art in Your Home :: Judy Kaufmann

A: Art means to me…Like something that appears in those things we were not prepare to see, like something Arty. That's when the real Art shows up for me, like the work from the art brut, a scene created by Jean Dubuffet that describes "art created outside the boundaries of official culture, focusing particularly on art by insane-asylum inmates" (wikipedia)

R: Reading books, blogs or magazines…I love to read graphic novels and contemporary US novelists. Now I'm reading Eating Animals, by Jonathan Safran Foer and also QUAI D'ORSAY, a graphic novel that is a a satirical description of Dominique de Villepin. It talks about the political world in France by Christophe Blain and Abel Lanzac. I have a huge list of blogs I visit every week. Some of my favorites are Bright Bazaar by Will (He is that kind of person you would love to meet in the middle of some beach with a mojito), All the Mountains by Amy Borrell, I love its delicacy, it's one of the blogs that has the most inspiring images for me. I also love designismine, sfgirlbybay, Pikaland, Oh Joy…among others. For magazines I subscribed to a Spanish magazine of interior design calls AD and to a Chilean satiric newspaper (The Clinic), and I must see how to receive Frankie Magazine from Australia.

JK3

T: Trends I see in art or graphic design are…Since I have my Pinterest account, I've found a way to sort my favorite trends. The idea to make a community through our own tastes is fantastic. I never follow the current fashion or the current trends, Pinterest has been a perfect place to see how people move around their own original objects, designers, clothes, food, etc.

A: Artists I admire are…First of all those who are closest to me; The wood sculptor Marc Sparfel, which happens to be my boyfriend, my good friend Coni Delavedova from Cobilab an although I do not know her in person, I really love the work of Leah Duncan. Now, as historical artists, I really love Klaus Hack, Cy twombly, the work process of Niki de saint phalle, Alexander Calder, Picasso, Saul Steinberg…among others.

JK4

N: Never will I…say never.

D: Dreams for my own work are…Learn from peers and invisible people behind the screen, share knowledge and to continue being motivated as I'm today.

P: Projects I am currently working on are…I'm making a lot of illustrations for a corporative project of a small island (can't give more details!) I'm also working on a illustration for The National Council for Culture and the Arts (Chile) in collaboration with Plop! Gallery for The Lukas Museum. Valparaiso, Chile and drawing more characters for my collection of famous prints.

JK5

R: Relaxing I do when…Traveling, reading, sleeping.

I: Interesting art focused websites I like are…I like this blog about comparisons, or this one with a great compilation of famous people hanging out together

JK6

N: New in my home is…The woman painted by my brother in law

T: Tomorrow I would like to go to…To my studio!

S: Studio, my studio is…New, big, full of prints and very colorful!

Thank you so much Judy for this lovely tour of the Art in Your Home! You can visint Judy's shop here, and her blog here.

Art in Your Home :: Laura Morrish

LM1

Art in the home of Laura Morrish

A: Art means to me…Thank you Chris-In-The-Morning for the thought: It's not the thing you fling, it's the fling itself. Whether experiencing art as its creator or as a viewer, to me, art is a tool in the process of becoming who you are. A fabulous, fun, creative, fill-up-the-walls-with-it tool.

LM3

R: Reading books, blogs or magazines..always! Favourite books include Walden, Or; Life in the Woods by Henry David Thoreau. It was a life-changer for me. One of my favourite HDT quotes is 'be not simply good, be good for something. Love.

On my reading list now is Color: A Natural History of the Palette by Victoria Finlay. She is a social anthropologist that takes the reader across time and continents to uncover the fascinating stories of colours. Magazines in my reading pile include INC – my favourite business mag, Canadian House & HomeLiving, Etc. and, from the online set, RueLonnyMatchbook

Blogs I enjoy these days include Desire to Inspire (I especially love Monday's Pets on Furniture post); Bright.Bazaar, Will is so great at finding all sorts of covet-worthy goodies; Happy Interior Blog, Igor is a man after my own heart, with the perfect mix of quirky things I haven't seen elsewhere; Elements of Style with Erin Gates – love the posts by her fabuloso husband, Andrew, and about her barn-obsessed Pa; Remodelista…I mean, who doesn't, what an awesome resource that is! And, of course, Bloesem, with all its charm and loveliness.

LM5

T: Trends I see in art or graphic design are…appreciating that fads are quickly passing while a trend is a 'prevailing tendency', it'd seem that, like me, people have been/are looking for signs of the handmade, the unique, the perfectly imperfect: things that offer a sense of time or tell a deeper story.  The longer and deeper we imbibe technology, I think we'll continue to look for balance by craving the opposite.  Art is an ideal way to find this balance, and to connect with each other in doing so.

In that our reliance and enjoyment of technology won't be waning any time soon, I think the handmade trend will continue, perhaps tweaked as it pairs with rider trends.  For me, I like to artists and the community, the environment, or animal welfare by choosing work that incorporates or benefits something in addition to the artist him/herself. Seems that we've all been making non-art purchases with this in mind over the last several years, and so I can't see how it won't spread to the art world in a bigger way. Recently, I purchased a sweet print of the moon, by FriendsWithYou, and loved that a portion of the proceeds benefit Free Arts NYC, a mentoring program helping at-risk kids build their self confidence. 20×200 often partners with charities, donating a portion of the purchase price in support of social causes.  In my own work, I do the same, donating 10% of my gross sales to support animal welfare.

LM6

A: Artists I admire are…the Group of Seven and their contemporaries probably tops the list. They'd head by boxcar out north, to the untouched lakes and unspoiled woods to paint the Canadian landscape, rich with saturated colour.  Their work just captivates me, from Lawren Harris' Shimmering Water – Algonquin Park to Tommy Thompson's The Jack Pine. Love it all. And while my work is so very different in just about every way possible, I am similarly inspired by the Big Wild. As Thoreau so aptly put it, "In wildness is the preservation of the world." There, I find energy, inspiration, and hope.

N: Never will I…pinch myself too hard!

LM8

D: Dreams for my own work are about…well, I don't really dream too much about the creative process itself – I just let that strike when it will, and let it unfold as it may. But in terms of the finished product, I am constantly thinking about getting it out there in a bigger way so that I can make ever bigger donations to animal welfare. While I haven't – even in a whisper in the darkest of night – yet mentioned to anyone, my biggest dream would be to sell enough to make enough to one day, maybe one day, open my own animal sanctuary. That'd be my little piece of heaven.

JM6Note: the above is Shimmering Water, Algonquin Park, 1922. Interestingly, in the '20s he stopped signing his work so that people would appreciate it -or not- based on the work itself rather than when or by whom it was painted. Also above is The Jack Pine by Tom Thomson, 1916-17.

P: Projects I'm currently working on are…Ooh! A book – I am really, really excited. It has been the one constant on my would-love-to-create list. Can't wait to share with everyone!!

R: Relaxing I do when…when my dogs are in charge. Sometimes they feel quite certain that I am working just way too hard. 'Sometimes' is at least once an hour. No matter, this is easily remedied: there are balls to fetch, pools to lap, and neighbours to bark at. Any maybe when that's done (much to their chagrin), then we'll squeak in a bit of guilty pleasure time. If I have more than ten minutes to spare, though, I get into a bit of monkey business.  Either a wall'll come down, a book case'll go up, a room'll be painted. Something. I love change, and creating and refining until home is as cozy, efficient, and unique-to-me as can be is a perfect pastime. Far less grandiose a job, the next thing on my list is hanging some recently framed pictures over my Nanna's Singer. I am mad wild for the gilt frames right now.

LM4

I: Interesting art focused websites…peppered through this entire post – they are my favourite haunts, though I also find great work directly through an artist's site, typically by way of a great blog.

N: New in my home is…a crokinole board. My family had a general store beginning way back in the 1890's.  It's now houses the city's historical archives. Anyway, when we cleaned it out in the late 80's, there were some things from way, way back in the day. The crokinole board was one of them. My father has had it in his mezzanine since, but was kind enough to pack it up and ship it down. Due to the years in storage, it has a decent warp in it. But this is just the perfect excuse to hang it on the wall as art rather than actually play on it.

LM7

T: Tomorrow I would like to go to…absolutely nowhere. I am a bar-none nester and relish days that I can spend tucked in, in my cozy flannels, with a drawing pad and my favourite pencil or some paints and a bagful of ideas.

JM10

S: Studio, my studio is…a bit of a gypsy. Sure, I have an office, but in terms of where my creative-time takes place? Sometimes it is in the living room, or at the dining room table, in the backyard, or even in the tub. Bathtime seems so condusive to good-idea generation. For years, I've wanted the tub wall to be a chalkboard, so I wouldn't have to decode my notes chicken-scrawled on soggy paper, or jeopardizing my iPad with rogue splashes.

A: Art means to me…a personal & untransferable vision of the world. Also, it has to do with beauty, somehow.

T: Trends I see in art or graphic design are…I'm not too much into graphic design right now. I see an increasing use of the illustration & handmade in graphic design, but maybe I'm not being objective, it's just the part of graphic design that relates the most to me.

BG6
