Reflective Clothing for the Modern Cyclist

In Los Angeles, it’s not uncommon to hear horror stories about cyclists in motor accidents, which is precisely why Angeleno designer Brett Clouser started this unique line of reflective cycling wear. Unlike standard neons, this minimalist jacket is savvy enough to wear out socially. It also collapses into a compact pouch, making it easy to store in your pocket. A reflective application on the jacket shines light directly back to its source, making it almost 400% more reflective and easier for drivers to see cyclists.

Eyewear in Perfect Harmony

The right pair of specs are all about balance and FLEYE’s premier design has got the solution nailed! Sure the eyewear is attractive, but the magic is in the adjustable nose pads affixed to a single piece of flexible titanium thread that gracefully loops through the nose bridge. It’s strong, durable and accentuates the aesthetic of the glasses with colors that match the style of the frame. Genius!

Corky Frames

Love these PVD coated, half cork fames. Designer Marc Tran has done a great job trying to marry very different elements and make them compliment each other. This new asymmetric frame combines contrasting materials and yet maintains their individual identity. Pretty cool if you ask me!

McQueen, Gatsby and Rearden Flying Tourbillon Watches

With BaselWorld just round the bend, we are seeing a lot of innovative watches making an appearance. The ones that really get me ticking are the ones with movements that are special. For example the three new editions to the Project 2 Watches by Refined Hardware: McQueen, Gatsby and Rearden Editions. All three of them host a Flying Tourbillon and come in three distinctive versions.

In horology, a tourbillon is an addition to the mechanics of a watch escapement that aims to counter the effects of gravity. This is done by mounting the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage, to negate the effect of gravity, especially when the timepiece (thus the escapement) is stuck in a certain position. Rather than being supported by a bridge, or cock, at both the top and bottom, the flying tourbillon is cantilevered, being only supported from one side.

The McQueen Edition PVD Black Tourbillon, The Gatsby Edition Steel Tourbillon and The Rearden Bronze Tourbillon are all limited to 33 pieces only. The watches are on a made-to-order basis only and really very exclusive.

Specs for the watches include a 42-hour power reserve, Sapphire crystal cover and 45 mm case. You can pick your choice of bracelet as it depends on each variant, however the watch comes in sexy steel hinged, pure carbon fiber box!

McQueen Edition Specs: Manual wind flying tourbillon with a silver hand perlage finish, black PVD finished case that is finished in steel, black ion plated grade 5 titanium, water resistance – 5 atm, adjustable PVD steel mesh or Black American Alligator strap.

Gatsby Edition Specs: 316l Stainless steel case paired with an adjustable steel mesh or Black American Alligator strap. Rest is same as the McQueen Edition.

Rearden Edition Specs: Manual wind flying tourbillon with a gold hand perlage finish, untreated pure bronze case fitted with a 35 mm sapphire crystal. Rest is same as the McQueen Edition.

Nooka With A ZIG

Besides its stunning geometric looks, the Nooka ZIG has one of the most practical elements that this digital era requires. The concept is the perfect marriage of a digital watch with USB, redefining portability and interaction. While the designer aspires to bring back the physical human interaction that is often lost with technology, I think the watch just takes us a step closer to the surreal world.

The Automotive Inspired Xetum Kendrick Watch

April is a month of frenzy in the world of watches, mainly because of Baselworld, the Mecca for watch-enthusiasts. Living up to the expectations, is San Francisco-based luxury watch startup Xetum Automatic Watches with their latest offering, the Xetum Kendrick. While I appreciate well-designed watches very much, I am more passionate about the ones that tell a story. The good news is that Xetum Kendrick is both well designed and has a good story to tell.

Designed in California and made in Switzerland, just like the rest of its siblings in the Xetum collection, the Xetum Kendrick is inspired by automotive instruments, which guide the design. So while the designers looked towards dashboards that made a strong statement, the direction they took was in favor of a design that was uncluttered and subtle in execution. These elements are reflected both on the dial and with the watch hands.

The Xetum Kendrick is purposely modern in design and comes in bold colors of red and blue. This is a significant departure from their previous collections, which were mainly in monochromatic scheme. The watches come teamed with matching NATO straps and a black rubber strap, all exclusive to the Kendrick. In line with the spring/summer collection!

Besides the automotive accents to the design, the other story that Xetum essays is their commitment to the environment. All Kendrick watches come in a watch-box crafted out of solid rubberwood. This environmentally friendly wood is harvested from the trees that have already lived their lifespan and are on their way to be used as firewood. So instead of being reduced to ashes, they are used to craft boxes, thus extending their purposeful life. And of course the watch has been christened “Kendrick”, commemorating a peak of a summit in Yosemite.

While the watch may be Swiss-made, there are subtle hints pointing towards the home state as well.

The Xetum Kendrick collection features bold automotive-inspired dials, paired with NATO or rubber straps – a distinctive new look for the Xetum collection.

Generation X

The Gear – X Watch Concept is a take on retro steampunk styling. I love it for its skeletonized dial that showcases the movement so aptly. Designed as a unisex watch, I can imagine it being worn by me more than my husband. The ample dial and case size is perfect and it’s definitely worth seeing how a manufacture would develop this watch’s movement.

Designing Time

Once in awhile I get a gem in my mailbox, a jewel so beautifully crafted, so perfectly engineered, and so vividly different that I openly say “wow” as I read about it. It’s a gentle reminder why I do this blog. AÃRK Collective is a small team of designers and entrepreneurs based in Melbourne who are trying to redefine the way we see time. The inaugural range comprises of three silhouettes that aim to showcase a perfect harmony between form and function.

Meet Classic, Timeless, and Iconic. Each design is shaped by their appreciation for minimal design, geometric shapes and graphic elements. They recognise that a watch is more than an instrument to tell time, but an object of desire that tells a story about the individual wearer.

I got my hands on two of these watches for a proper review so keep your eyes peeled for more to come from this talented group.
