Black Diamond-Tipped Carbon Dater

Used to write and illustrate directly onto glass, the carbon dater is a black diamond-tipped pen created by Reykjavik-based designer Sruli Recht. Combining his poetic sensibility with a passion for process leads Recht to design objects that look to the future yet retain an impression of the past, such as the shoes and blankoat we highlighted earlier this year.

With its luxe materials and subversive function (“an architect, photographer and a graf writer walk into a bar,” reads the blurb), this object marks the latest high-concept tool in the Sruli Recht collection. Set in a brass claw, the black diamond weighs in at just over a quarter carat and is fixed to a laser-engraved carbon rod and presented in an equally striking 304-piece inked cardboard box.

The carbon dater sells from Sruli Recht’s online shop for €730.
