The House Recast by Studio Ben Allen wins Don't Move, Improve! 2021

A colourful concrete-clad house

A “rich and interesting” refurbishment of a Victorian house by Studio Ben Allen has been named London‘s best new home improvement project in the Don’t Move, Improve! awards.

The House Recast is the overall winner of this year’s contest, which is organised annually by New London Architecture (NLA) to showcase the diversity of homes in the UK capital.

Studio Ben Allen was invited to overhaul the dwelling by a retired couple who wanted to reorganise its layout while introducing a new kitchen and two bathrooms.

With an otherwise open brief, project architects Omar Ghazal and Ben Allen decided to use the project as an opportunity to experiment with off-site fabrication techniques and pigmented concrete for the home’s structure and finishes.

The architects said this was inspired by the house’s original Victorian design, “where the brickwork is patterned and decorated, while also being a load-bearing material and having the speed and quality by being fabricated offsite.”

It was this unconventional approach and the way it complements the house’s original features that led the project to be crowned the overall winner by the jury.

“It feels very much like a modern intervention, but it feels completely in keeping with the period of the property and the original motives,” reflected jury member and architect Melissa Dowler.

“I think there’s something really rich and interesting there in that relationship and I think they’ve played off that really nicely, without falling into pastiche or cliche.”

Dowler was joined on the panel by NLA’s curator-in chief Peter Murray, Amin Taha of Groupwork and Grand Designs Magazine editor Karen Stylianides.

Whitby Wood‘s Sebastian Wood was also a member, alongside property journalist Kunle Barker, Tom Foxall of Historic England and managing director of NLA Tamsie Thomson.

Samsung Serif TV gets an abstract screensaver filter to give you movie theater curtain vibe!

TVs mounted above fireplaces or propped up in the center of the living room can turn into eyesores when not in use– empty, black boxes staring back at your guests don’t bode well for the overall interior design of your living room. South Korean design studio Master Pictures conceptualized a screensaver called Curtain Mode for the Samsung Serif TV to help remedy the television’s idle screen downfall.

Recently, people have taken to transforming their television screens into pieces of artwork, photo slideshows, and abstract moving images when they’re not streaming their latest binge-watch. Instead of the blank stare from empty television screens that pervades the living room, screensavers like Curtain Mode from Master Pictures create more dynamic, eye-catching displays for when the TV’s not in use. Curtain Mode for Samsung Serif TV essentially abstractifies your idle TV screen, taking what you were previously watching and veiling the screen with an abstract impression of it.

Without turning the TV off itself, the idle on-screen content is overlaid with a digital filter that operates like an opaque, abstracted curtain, undulating in contrast and time with the moving images of your previous screen. When curtain mode is active, users can still access television services such as the clock, Bluetooth speakers, apps, and their photo gallery. Since Curtain Mode blurs the television screen into ripples of abstract shapes like curtains, users can customize the screensaver by adjusting how much the pixels are blurred and by selecting the curtain’s color.

Curtain Mode abstractifies the previous screen to create a moving digital filter for your television.

Curtain Mode’s abstract impression can be customized by adjusting the color and pixelation.

The abstract impressions work to create a moving digital curtain.

Curtain Mode’s color customization can be chosen according to the television’s previous screen or preselected pixelation.

Instead of empty, black screens, Curtain Mode transforms your television screen into an undulating digital curtain.

Curtain Mode’s color scheme can be chosen in conjunction with your living room’s interior design elements.

This tiny self-watering self-lighting planter lets you effortlessly grow a garden in your home

While some appreciate getting down and dirty with soil, seeds, and fertilizers, gardening isn’t for everyone. The Nano Garden takes the fuss out of gardening, allowing anyone and everyone to grow their own plants right inside their home!

I like thinking of gardening as cooking… a complex, rewarding activity that doesn’t come naturally to everyone. With that analogy, I think of the Nano Garden as instant ramen – fulfilling, yet easy enough for anyone to manage! The Nano Garden is a tiny planter that comes with everything you need to grow plants at home. Its planter base holds water, a gardening pod contains seeds along with all the nutrients required to make them grow, and finally, a height-adjustable full-spectrum light automatically switches on and off to mimic the sun, giving the plants the light they need to photosynthesize!

The Nano Garden features a two-part planter that waters and aerates itself thanks to its clever design. The pot itself holds water, while the floater inside houses the plant-pod – an all-in-one compostable pod that contains seeds and nutrients suspended within a growth medium. The pod floats on water, taking in as much as the plants need… and as the water level depletes, the floating pod descends downwards into the planter. This allows you to visually gauge how much water there is within your Nano Garden’s reservoir, allowing you to easily fill it up. A full water reservoir lasts anywhere from 2 weeks to a month (depending on the plant you grow), and the plant technically waters itself – so you never need to worry about over or under-watering your plants. The planter is accompanied by a neat light that sits on a telescopic arm that you can height-adjust as your plant grows. The full-spectrum light is fine-tuned to mimic the rays of the sun, and it automatically switches on and off as the sun rises and sets. Each Nano Garden even comes with an app that lets you connect your smartphone to the planter via Bluetooth and allows it to automatically adjust its light intensity and duration based on the plant.

The Nano Garden offers a range of 50 plants to choose from – spanning flowers, decorative greens, and even herbs and leafy vegetables. The magic lies in its plant-pod, a bio-plastic pod that houses the seeds in a nutrient-dense growth medium. The pods are GMO and pesticide-free, and are guaranteed to sprout – creators of the Nano Garden, Prêt à Pousser, even offer replacement pods if they don’t grow. The pods automatically draw water from the reservoir below, and the Nano Garden’s design even promotes air-flow through the roots, keeping them well oxygenated. Along with choosing your plant pod, you even get to choose the color of your planter – ranging from the classic earthy terracotta to a host of pastel hues that add a touch of vibrance to your home. The fact that they don’t need direct sunlight means you can place your Nano Garden anywhere, and the lack of drainage holes at the base means you can easily keep them on tables, bookshelves, or even your kitchen counter! After all, all you need to really do is add water every 2-4 weeks and watch your home garden flourish on its own!

Pet-friendly products to keep your pet comfortable + safe on your next holiday!

Our pets are our lifelines, and we hate being apart from them! At least I do for sure. But taking our pets on our travels with us can be a bit of an issue! Traveling is never easy for our pets. It makes them anxious, and stressed, and often results in them falling sick. Hence, we have to ensure their comfort at all times and make sure they’re being well taken care of. In such scenarios, having handy and effective pet products with us can be extremely helpful! Cozy pet carriers, portable food/water containers, and beds are all travel products that can make transits comfier and safer for our pets. Hence, we’ve curated a collection of innovative and functional pet products that are perfect for those troublesome travel journeys with your pets! These products promise to make your trips not only fun for you, but for your beloved pet as well.

Talk about purrfect design execution! The Catzz kitty-bed is inspired directly by its feline occupant. Designed to be flat-packed, the Catzz is an icosahedral shelter for cats that comes with multiple triangular panels that come together to form the enclosed shelter. The clever bit, however, is the fact that the Catzz bed actually looks like a minimalist cat head, complete with two pointy ears! Made from individual felt panels, the flat-packed bed can easily be assembled in minutes. When put together, it forms the perfect haven for your kitten, being a combination of robust and sturdy yet fuzzy and comfortable. The Catzz bed even comes with a dangling toy that you can suspend from the bed’s ear (for the cat to periodically play with), and when the bed does get dirty, it can easily be disassembled and machine-washed. It’s perfect to carry with you when you’re traveling with your pets!

The Air Cage was designed specifically to make travel journeys easier for pets and their owners so that everyone can enjoy an emotional turbulence-free flight! Air Cage was created to ensure your pet’s safety and ease your mind when you’re traveling with them. The concept was designed to be a rent-as-you-go service but it can also be opened to buying. You get your carrier in advance so your pet can familiarize themselves with it and have lesser anxiety during the flight. On the day of departure, your pet will be comfortable in the Air Cage which you can then hand over to the attendants without any worry because you will be able to monitor your pet throughout the journey thanks to an in-built device. Apart from the real-time camera monitor, the carrier has many features to keep your pet comfortable – a water bottle, a pet bowl, and a bowel pad too!

This clever animal carrier was designed to prepare you and your furry companion for disasters by equipping you with emergency kits that work for your needs and the needs of your emotional service pet. While we love and care for them as we do for our own children, there is not enough being done in terms of disaster preparedness for them. Evacuating with animals needs a lot of advanced preparation and most people are unprepared due to a lack of information or kits that are made for this specific situation. As emotional support/companion animals are increasingly becoming a new norm, we need a kit like Base which ensures their safety while doubling up as an everyday pet furniture item in the house. In the event of a disaster, you can rely on the built-in emergency kit by using Base as a carrier for your pet.

If you’ve ever traveled anywhere with your pets, you know how difficult it can be to cater to their needs while you’re on the go! Making sure they are comfy and don’t get anxious, feeding them their fav meal and water, and ensuring they have their little bathroom breaks – the list of issues is endless. However, Miray Özlem ER’s Portable Food and Water Container can help us out with any feeding issues we may encounter! Miray designed this handy pet product, especially for dogs. The container is large enough to store and provide at least one or two meals for dogs weighing between 1 to 40 kgs. Not only does the portable container store food, but it also stores water. The interesting part is that the container comes along with a food and water bowl! And the bowls can be attached onto the container. The food bowl can be neatly fitted on top of the food section, whereas the water bowl can be fitted on top of the water section. So whenever you want to feed your pet, you can place the little bowls, and fill them up with food and water from the container!

Sunghoon Park’s ‘Carrio’ is quite versatile and modular as well! At first glance, it may look like an ordinary pet carrier, but once you dwell deeper, it has a bit of a surprise in store for you. At home, Carrio can be used as a bed or a quaint resting spot for your pet, a personal area for your pet to laze around in after a long day of play. When it comes to functioning as a carrier, it provides two modules, owing to two types of straps that can be customized. It can be used as a carrier backpack, slip it onto your shoulders effortlessly and take your pet alongside you wherever you please. Put on the second pair of straps, and it can be used as a travel carrier bag! You can hold it horizontally like a duffle bag, apt for your larger furry friends.

Most people avoid using pet houses in their homes because it takes up too much space and they can’t tuck it away like they can with the pet beds. But Accordio is here to solve that dilemma, it is a portable, flexible, accordion-like pet house that can be expanded for your pet’s use or flat-packed away if you want to carry it places with you! Accordio’s form drew inspiration from the designer’s niece who had a silicone bowl plate. “I was intrigued by its flexibility and portability. After some research, I found that silicone also has a fascinating collapsible feature, which was later adapted into a foldable house,” explains Seong. The unique pet house is a study in portable pet furniture. The silicone makes it super lightweight and gives it a distinct collapsible feature. Silicone not only makes it easy to carry along for outdoor activities or travel but is also very easy to clean. Accordio can be compressed into 1/6th of its full size by pushing both sides. The fabric cushion included conveniently fits into the collapsed form for portability

Passakorn Kulkliang designed PAWSPAL in order to help better facilitate the typically difficult task of traveling with animal companions. The product has three main functions: a fully integrated, chargeable air ventilation system, a bottom deck used to roll the carrying cases, and the individual crate’s inbuilt stackability. If the user were to choose to roll their pets through the airport, just like the common rolling suitcase, then the case or cases can be placed atop the removable base for easy maneuvering throughout any space or building. In addition to the stackable feature and the wheeled base, users can opt out to carry the case as it is. Lastly, inside the crate, you won’t have to worry about your pet overheating because each case comes equipped with an operating air ventilation system that keeps your animal cool at all times. Each crate from PAWSPAL includes a charging hole for USB C cables so that keeping your pet cool is a given.

Hyesung Yung designed PRODOGT, a refrigerator, especially for pets! PRODOGT is a green and grey-colored quirky little appliance! It almost looks like a portable fan, and it does mimic its dynamics in a certain way (more on that later). The center section of the fridge which looks like a portable fan actually stores the food. You can gain access to this section, by opening the little door of the fridge and sliding your pet’s food into it. When it’s time for your pet’s meal, the food slides from the storage section to the little platter attached to the bottom of the fridge. The platter slides out when it’s dinner time for your furry friend! PRODOGT not only stores and cools pet food, but it also serves it quite efficiently! Another interesting feature of PRODOGT is its portability! Also, not to mention, it is wireless as well. It’s unlike the hefty or heavy fridges we use for ourselves. PRODOGT is a light, easy-to-carry and portable fridge that you can carry around whenever you travel!

For animal lovers, their pet can be their world and their pet’s comfort is quite often a top priority for them. One of the most stressful activities for animals is traveling due to the discomfort that it causes and the separation from their owner. The Aroma Pet Carrier aims to create a calmer environment through the introduction of clean, fresh air. A ventilation system allows purified, fresh air to be introduced into the carrier, instantly creating a more pleasant environment. This clean air is then infused with the fresh and calming scent that is peppermint; this aroma reduces the nauseating feeling that comes with motion sickness, something that pets are prone to getting. A second aroma also flows into the cabin, the scent of soil; this natural fragrance relaxes the animal and reduces tension.

The Terra Firma tailgates Bowlus Road Chief’s Endless Highways Performance Edition is complete with a 26-foot length body, reflective chrome exterior, in-floor heating system, and large lithium iron phosphate battery pack that allows for a week’s worth of off-grid traveling. On the inside, Terra Firma brings the elegance equal to that found in private jets and newer Tesla models equipped with plenty of high-tech features that meet the needs of even your furry travel companions. Whether you’d like to bring your cat or dog along for the trip, Terra Firma includes a built-in, personalized pet bed, along with pull-out food and water bowls. If your pup is ever too tired to join you at your side for a good hike, with Pet-Flex remote temperature monitoring, you can head up the mountain assured that sure your pets are safe and happy.

DJI FPV with a remote-controlled camera dolly brings precise control + ease of use for inspired filmmakers!

Filmmaking systems like Eclipse Rover or the Freefly TERO have certain drawbacks – limiting their inherent resourcefulness. They are prone to flipping over – risking damage to the expensive cameras. One person needs to control the camera gimbal while the other maneuvers the vehicle around for perspective shots on the existing camera dolly systems in use. This is where the DJI FPV X – an RC camera car concept for Filmmakers designed by Parth Kashikar and DAAPworks comes in handy for enhancing the ease of use and equipment safety. This cool idea came across when Parth participated in a student film project and identified the loopholes in the traditional systems.

First up, the RC camera dolly has a larger platform to lower the center of gravity, thereby reducing rollovers’ risk at high speeds. The adaptive stabilization tech at the robotic camera pivot point helps in eliminating the shakiness too. Taking inspiration from the DJI VR headset, the person can control the camera movement by moving in the intended direction in the 3D space. Parth imagines using an existing DJI controller to drive the vehicle in any direction – even recording the motion paths to be replayed in case the intended shot is not achieved. The RC vehicle has easy to replace modular parts to make repairs convenient.

This RC car for filmmakers takes care of the significant manual work required – letting the creative minds focus more on executing their shots. The ability to control it with the DJI VR headset and remote control gives more control over the movement of the RC car – down to the last inch. Won’t it be great to have this concept dolly car, in reality, to get more creative with filmmaking or cinematic short movies?

This organized desk design with hidden details will give you major Japandi feels!

The first place I hit after waking up and freshening up every morning is my work desk! I, then go on, to spend a substantial amount of my day on it, working and typing away to glory, and usually bid adieu to it by evening. And I believe this is the case for most of us since work from home became the new norm, and our home offices our new favorite hang-out spot. And now for some reason, whenever I come across a great desk design, I instantly get chills. I begin envisioning myself working on that particular desk, wondering how comfortable and ergonomic it might be to work upon. New desk designs almost excite me at this point in my life, you can say! One such desk that truly excites me is the ODU Desk.

Designed by Annabella Hevesi, there is something about the ODU Desk that instantly puts me at ease. It’s just so well-designed! Clean, minimal, and soft, it’s a desk that almost gives me Japandi feels. (Japandi is a growing design trend that merges Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics.) It’s a warm wooden desk with a protective screen around it that ensures you have your privacy while working! It shuts off the outside world and helps you focus completely on your work. Not to mention, the wooden desk top has been integrated with little storage containers! These containers are perfect for storing your office stationery, souvenirs, and other knick-knacks you may want to place on your desk. An interesting feature is that you can actually remove and separate the containers from the desk. This is perfect for when you want to clean the nooks and crannies of the desk. The ODU desk also has two main drawers to store your larger office items such as files and documents. The handles on the drawers have been so subtly crafted that they are almost invisible! Little hidden details like these on the ODU desk are what make it such a gem. The desk is also large enough to accommodate another person on it. Both the sides of the desk have been neatly equipped with storage sections and drawers, so if for some reason you have a work buddy for the day, the two of you can easily fit on the desk, each with his/her own personal space.

The ODU desk is a one-of-a-kind furniture design that not only meets the mark when it comes to functionality but aesthetics as well. It’s a beautifully designed minimal piece, that also caters as an efficient workspace for you. It creates a productive environment for work, all the while managing to perfectly merge with the interiors of your home office. It’s the best of both worlds!

Yinka Ilori’s 3D-Printed, Candy-Colored Basketball Court

British-Nigerian artist and designer Yinka Ilori has created a public, half-sized basketball court intended to inspire optimism in London’s Canary Wharf. The court—designed for three-on-three games—eschews traditional materials in favor of 3D-printed polypropylene tiles called Traction² made by Hampshire’s OnCourt. The first public basketball court in the neighborhood, it boasts one hoop, a plethora of colors and patterns, and the slogan “Be the best you can be.” Ilori tells Jennifer Hahn at Dezeen, “I didn’t want people to put too much pressure on themselves and instead just celebrate being alive and being around family and friends because not everyone made it through the year. It was about trying to inject this sense of hope and positivity into the space. All you can do is give your best—I think that applies to everything that we do in our lives.” Read and see more at Dezeen.

Vessel to reopen in New York on Friday with buddy system to prevent suicides

The Vessel, the 46-metre-high viewpoint in New York‘s Hudson Yards designed by Thomas Heatherwick, will reopen on 28 May. However, no solo climbers will be allowed in an attempt to prevent further suicide deaths.

Visitors will no longer be able to go up the staircase-based attraction alone. Instead, a buddy system will require everyone to be in groups of two or more.

Only groups of two or more allowed

“Vessel was envisioned as a shared, immersive design experience,” said a spokesperson for Hudson Yards developer Related Companies.

“Requiring visitors to attend in groups of two or more significantly enhances the safety of the experience.”

Dezeen understands that Heatherwick Studio had put forward a design study for potential changes to the structure, but Vessel will reopen with the new ticketing system instead.

Related Companies has also partnered with Lady Gaga’s mental health charity Born This Way to create signage at the venue and messages on the tickets offering help to those in distress.

Three deaths at the viewpoint since 2019

Three people have died by suicide at the Vessel in three different incidents since it opened in 2019.

The attraction in Hudon Yards has been closed since a 21-year-old man jumped from the Vessel on 11 January. At the time, Related Companies told Dezeen it would consult with psychiatrists and other experts about implementing suicide-prevention strategies at the viewpoint.

A 24-year-old woman from New York died after jumping from the structure in December of 2020, and a 19-year-old man from New Jersey in February 2019, before its official opening.

Vessel is a honeycomb-shaped building formed of 154 staircases that meet at 80 landing platforms, providing 360-degree views of the Hudson Yards development and the river.

Heatherwick Studio’s other major public project in New York, a 2.4-acre park and performance venue elevated over the Hudson on concrete columns called Little Island, opened on Friday last week.

This minimal fan’s stripped down design is crafted from sustainable materials to last for generations!

It’s that time of year again– it’s getting hot and the fans are coming out. Finding the right fan for your living space means finding one that’s practical and blends in with the rest of your furniture and architecture. As consumers, we tend to make a lot of stylistic compromises for the sake of practicality, which leads to products getting discarded before they reach obsolescence. Inspired to create a standing fan that’s not white, plastic, and likely to end up on the sidewalk come September, design group Ttato built Aura.

Minimal by conscious design, Aura’s build was stripped down to its bare components: cage, propeller, base, and motor. Built to be a home appliance that can be used throughout the year, Aura was specifically built for optimal functionality. Constructed with materials that were selected for their sustainability, durability, and beauty, Aura exudes a sophisticated air and follows that through with detailed functionality.

Aura’s rotor blades, for instance, were formed from the overlaying and bending of birch and ash veneers, lengthening the rotor blades’ lifespan while celebrating the craft of woodworkers. Then, the aluminum frame is coated with powder and designed to be lightweight and easy to assemble. The three legs of Aura are carved from solid ash wood and can be easily dislodged so that Aura can be transported anywhere. Designed to outlast and redefine our relationships with household furniture, Aura is in it even for the long winter.

Named after the mythical deity that represents ‘the gentle breeze in the early morning,’ Aura was built to move large quantities of air at low speeds. Aura’s built-in controller allows users to choose from five different speeds and outfitted with a swivel and tilt function, users can adjust the direction of airflow as well. During the winter, Aura can be used to move the cooler air from the floor to the ceiling by tilting the fan upwards so the rotor can draw in cool air and the blades can propel the warmer air back down towards the floor.

Designer: Ttato Design

Aura’s minimalist design merges a slim build with a wide area for an elegant addition to any living space.

Aura’s powder-coated aluminum frame is lightweight and durable.

Coming in an array of different colors, Aura has the right look for your space.

By turning the fan upwards, the rotor draws in the cool air and propels the warmer air to the ground.

The 5-speed controller comes with summer and winter modes.

Aura’s 5-speed controller allows users to adjust the strength and mode of the fan’s airflow.
