Wolff Olins creates visual identity for OMA-designed art gallery in Paris

Branding firm Wolff Olins has created a typeface for Paris gallery Lafayette Anticipations, based on the building’s “mechanical” renovation by Dutch studio OMA.

The agency was asked to create a visual identity that would reflect the multi-disciplinary nature of the gallery, which opened on 10 March 2018, inside a 19th-century building that has undergone an extensive renovation by Rem Koolhaas’ firm.

The revamped building acts as both an exhibition and performance space, but also also hosts workshops in its basement, providing invited artists with space and tools to create new artworks.

The art centre’s steel and glass Exhibition Tower comprises four motorised platforms, which can move up and down independently to align with different floors – allowing the space to be reconfigured in 49 different ways.

Wolff Olins was keen to reflect this through its bespoke typeface, created in collaboration with foundry Colophon, and did so by cutting the sans-serif lettering into different parts.

By inconsistently cropping and misaligning letters, the studios aimed to convey movement in the type, as a nod to the building’s “mechanical” design.

As artists would continually be at work in the gallery space, the designers also wanted to create a feeling of anticipation by concealing the letting in parts, rather than revealing things in full.

“As the artists make their pieces, so the building makes different spaces. Visitors wouldn’t know what to expect next,” said the companies.

Wolff Olins also developed an algorithm that causes the same word to yield different combinations each time it is typed, adding to the random-style of the font.

According to the creators, the typeface is “a feat of design, maths and code, used across print, digital and signage to great effect.”

“Overall, this is much more than a traditional brand identity. It’s a smart, interconnected system of responsive assets, intrinsically connected to new technologies,” said gallery founder Guillaume Houzé.

“It seeks to create a genuine dialogue and emotional connection with people and is an example of intelligent identity at work. It literally signifies to our audience that there’s more to what one reads or sees.”

The Lafayette Anticipations gallery is part of the Galeries Lafayette Group, which also owns the French department store of the same name.

“We created the Galeries Lafayette Corporate Foundation as a tool for advancing the conversation in our era and participating in the major social debates through the applied and visual arts,” said Houzé.

“The Foundation will be more than a gallery. It will be a place to gather and converse, to engage on a wide range of topics and issues,” he added.

Wolff Olins, founded in 1965, has offices in London, New York and San Francisco. The agency was also responsible for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new logo unveiled in 2016, and the 2012 London Olympics logo.

More recently, it created a shape-shifting logo for Brazilian telecoms company Oi that changes colour and form in response to people’s voices.

Shepard Fairey creates posters to protest school gun violence

American designer Shepard Fairey has produced a pair of posters protesting gun violence in US schools, coinciding with nationwide demonstrations.

Fairey released the posters to be used during walkouts and protests staged by students across the country yesterday, 14 March 2017, in an attempt to pressure the government into passing tougher gun legislation.

Free to download, both designs incorporate AR-15 assault rifles into their graphics. On the first, the weapons and bullets are arranged as a flower-like motif around a peace symbol, with text reading “schools not warzones” in red against a yellow background.

The second features the silhouette of a single rapid-fire device, accompanied by the words “an assault on our future” and surrounded by a border of chains.

Both are formatted as 18 by 24-inch (46 by 61-centimetre) posters, and also available as square versions.

Yesterday’s protests took place exactly a month after a teenager killed 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida – the latest in a string of similar gun-related incidents across the US in recent years.

Thousands of young people participated in the walkouts, which were organised by the group behind the National Women’s March and took place for 17 minutes at 10am.

Fairey has become known for his politically charged artworks, after his campaign poster for former US president Barack Obama was widely praised and named Design of the Year in 2009. He then adapted the now-iconic graphic to represent America’s minority populations when Donald Trump was inaugurated last year.

The latest designs join a series that are available to download from the website of Studio Number One, which Fairey founded in 2003.

Surgeon Breaks Down 49 Medical Scenes From Film & TV

Annie Onishi, general surgery resident at Columbia University, takes a look at emergency room and operating room scenes from a variety of television shows and movies and breaks down how accurate they really are. Hydration for Humans and Friends

double_shot_water_purifier_layout

The Double Shot water purifier is one that your pet will love too! It earns its namesake for the companion water dispenser located at the foot that provides fresh H20 to any and all your pets at home or in the office.

The eco-conscious design ensures that any unused water ends up back in the lower bowl so it doesn’t go to waste. The unit also features a sensor system that detects when pets approach and will automatically refill their bowl if it’s empty. With its bead-blasted aluminum and stainless steel accents, it’s also aesthetically less invasive compared to other standalone water dispensers despite having the bonus Fido-loving functionality!

Whether you don’t have time to make it to the masseuse or you’ve got a significant other with stingy hands, it’s important to treat yourself to a good massage every once in a while if not for the good feels, for the health benefits. This is especially true if you’ve got a desk job or are confined to a seat all day. Designed with this in mind, the Relacher Muscle Massager includes a neck and shoulder massager, posture detector and a mobile app that work together to ease back and shoulder pain.

Unlike other devices that simply correct posture by alerting the user when they’re slouching, the massage feature also soothes and relaxes the muscles to release tension and stress. Don’t worry, if you get too relaxed and start slouching it will send an alert direction to your smartphone. Using the dedicated ReLacher app, users can see how their posture is progressing and customize their massage type to fit their unique needs.

Make yourself some Darth-jeeling tea!

darth_vader_kettle_1

How does Vader like his tea? Burning hot! Although he doesn’t complain if it’s Luke-warm either…

The Fowndry’s hilarious, quirky kettle pays tribute to one of cinema’s most popular villains. Designed with a silhouette that uncannily resembles Vader’s helmet, the Darth Vader Kettle comes made in Stainless Steel and Plastic, has a 1.7L capacity, and a whistle that the creators describe as being powerful enough to “awaken the Force”!

We’re loving every bit of the adaptation, especially the handle that was designed to resemble the grip of Darth Vader’s lightsaber. Great for brewing up some tea or boiling water “with barely suppressed rage”, the Darth Vader Kettle is an officially licensed product and becomes available from the 19th of March, although pre-orders are open right now!
