Concrete balcony extends from Brazilian house by Felipe Rodrigues

Brazilian architect Felipe Rodrigues has created a split-level house, with a glazed living area between thin concrete planes that project from a hillside.

Moenda House is situated on an expansive 215,278 square feet (20,000 square metres) of property in southeastern Brazil, with views of the Mantiqueira mountains.

The land was subdivided from an existing farm, with over half of the property occupied by protected forestland.

The building, designed for owners who requested a separate residence for guests, steps down its sloped site in a series of partial levels.

“The client suggested two independent yet interconnected blocks,” said Rodrigues. “The first, which will be used more often, is for the owners, while the second is for guests.”

A two-storey block forms the main home, with a large cantilevered balcony that looks out to the horizon. A rectangular volume behind, and to one side, houses visitors and is connected to the larger structure by a garage.

Staggered both vertically and horizontally, the layout allows the majority of rooms to benefit from the view.

“This created wide open spaces with plentiful ventilation, and more importantly, enabled one of the project’s main aspirations, which was to draw the landscape inside the building,” said the architect.

These sections all sit on stone-clad bases, and have raw concrete floor and roof slabs. Side external walls are also concrete, while floor-to-ceiling glazing is used on the elevation facing the best views.

The most glass is found around the lowest space, which houses an open-plan living room and kitchen. The transparent panels wrap three sides of the room and slide open to provide access to the balcony, which extends towards the vista and is covered by the roof that does the same above.

Up a half flight of stairs are two en-suite bedrooms, then up again is a lounge area that opens onto a roof terrace.

In the detached guest block, a further two bedrooms and bathrooms are reached past a covered outdoor dining area.

For interior decor, spaces are left minimally furnished with modernist pieces. A hanging black fireplace anchors the living room.

Concrete “screens” filter sunlight and allow for natural ventilation, adding texture and geometry.

Grey tiles inside extend to the balconies, with other surfaces of varying shades of grey, alongside wood and white.

Further down the slope, the property also has an infinity pool and hot tub beside a wooden deck, from which the view can also be enjoyed.

Competition: win a pack of 50 Housing Floor Plans cards

For our latest competition, we’re giving away two sets of flash cards documenting contemporary residential blocks designed for compact city living.

Two readers will each receive one of deck of 50 Housing Floor Plans cards, created by A+T Research Group – the research arm of Spanish company A+T Architecture Publishers.

50 Housing Floor Plans by A+T research

Each of the 50 cards measures 13 by eight centimetres and features a city housing block built between 2000 to 2017. The floor plan of the residential building is illustrated on front, while the rear side displays the plan of a unit inside.

Although seemingly a game, 50 Housing Floor Plans is intended as a resource for architects to compare the different designs, including levels of privacy and “exterior-ness”, which denotes the relationship to the outdoors.

50 Housing Floor Plans by A+T research

“[The aim is] to disseminate the good qualities of the collective housing in which we would like to live, through built projects floor plans,” A+T Research Group told Dezeen. “It is not a pack of playing cards. It is a pack for better living.”

“The reduced size and individual format mean that it is possible to lay out the 50 floor plans proposed in the pack all at once,” the group continued. “This means that the architect can compare, order and disorder the cards so as to select the ones which best adapt to the project.”

An off-white background, along with muted tones of red, brown and green, give the cards a retro aesthetic, while all the information is simplified to make them easy to read.

Rather than using the project name, each card is titled according to the form of the floor plan of the featured housing scheme. Examples include Z-shape, Butterfly, Spine, Empty Circle and Cactus.

The floor plans, which are scaled at 1:1000 for the building and 1:300 for the single residence, are flanked by rulers that mark metres on one side and feet on the other.

A scale at the top of the card features bars of Lowest, Low, Moderate, High and Highest to denote the levels privacy and “exterior-ness”. Final scores are shown in bold, with privacy marked in red on the front and “exterior-ness” displayed in green on the rear.

Extra cards accompanying the 50 housing floor plans describe the concepts and indexes for gathering the information for these two criteria.

For privacy, the team researched vertical circulation, the floor area taken by horizontal circulation, building heights, and the number of housing units per storey. “Exterior-ness” gathers together the percentage of outdoor space and facade, as well as the width of the openings and the depth of the housing unit.

A+T Reseach Group was founded in 2011 by journalist Aurora Fernández Per and architect Javier Mozas to deliver research into collective housing, density, mixed uses and public space, which is then published by A+T Architecture Publishers.

The duo previously created the 50 Urban Blocks card pack, which details how to design a city block. 50 Housing Floor Plans marks the second set of A+T cards exploring compact city living and is available to purchase from A+T Publishers for €22 (£19) in either English or Spanish.

Can someone be a collector and be uncluttered?

The quick answer to the question posed in the headline is yes. Being uncluttered and being a collector are not mutually exclusive states.

I will be the first to admit, however, that being an uncluttered collector is not an easy task. The temptation to collect beyond one’s reasonable limits is high, and can thwart even someone with the best of intentions.

An uncluttered collector, by definition, takes pride in his or her collection and displays it fully and respectfully. A collector wants to enjoy his or her collection and share it with others. Conversely, a collection is clutter when it’s stored out of sight, in a disrespectful manner, and for no other reason than just to have more stuff.

So what does an uncluttered collection look like? Unclutterer Jerry wrote about PlasmicSteve’s memorabilia office in our Workspace of the Week feature. I see this office as a perfect example of how someone can be an uncluttered collector and honor the things he or she chooses to collect:

Are you a collector? How do you display fully and respectfully your collection? Or, are you storing your “collection” in boxes in your attic in less-than-desirable conditions?
