MB Architecture covers Hamptons farmhouse in charred cypress inside and out

New York-based MB Architecture has clad a gabled concrete house and matching garage in the Hamptons in pale timber to give the simple volumes a rustic look.

House in Amagansett is a two-storey residence surrounded by grassy areas and trees, in the hamlet of the same name on Long Island’s south shore.

The home is situated along The Lanes – a set of walkable streets perpendicular to Main Street. These have traditionally been a community of small cottages, but mansion-like houses have begun to overtake the local vernacular.

MB Architecture chose to reconnect with the smaller scale of the area, so oriented the barn-like structures perpendicular to the street to minimise their visual impact.

“In a departure from recent additions to the area, where houses extend from side to side on a given parcel – often choking it – we opted to let the side facade – the narrow end – be the street-front,” said Maziar Behrooz, founder of MB Architecture.

The longer side of the house faces south to make the most of direct sunlight. A sunken courtyard on this side has a light-well that filters light down into a basement. An outdoor shower and pool with lounge chairs complete the outdoor areas.

Ample natural sunlight, durability, and privacy guide the overall design. The front yard is designed around a meadow that acts as a buffer from the street. Over time, the area will transform into a dense green space.

“The first impression of the house is that of a raw, unfinished, concrete wall sitting in this meadow; its profile echoing the familiar shape of a barn,” said the firm.

All exterior components were chosen for their hardiness and ability to weather naturally over time. Construction materials include charred cypress woodwork, exposed concrete, glazing and a zinc roof.

“One of our challenges was to create a home that would accommodate the owners wish for a maintenance-free house with longevity, inside and outside,” said the firm.

Amagansett and other towns in the Hamptons are popular beach getaways for New York City residents in the summertime, but during the winter, the region is prone to freezing coastal winds and storms known as Nor’easters.

Therefore, the home’s windows and doors push tightly against the clapboards to form a tight weather seal. Its timber siding is designed to wear with the elements as well.

On the ground floor are the main living spaces, split between eating and sitting areas. Located near the garage is an intimate dining room with an eight-person table. A kitchen nearby has white cabinetry, grey tile floors, and a backsplash of pale green subway tiles.

Throughout the home, walls are clad in grey-toned timber to match the exterior. Overhead, ceilings are lined in a warmer wood, matching frames for window ribbons.

A living room has ample sitting options and a large brick fireplace. Sliding glass doors join a covered porch. A staircase hides behind an exposed concrete wall, and designed with a steel box for the storing the owners’ collection of rare and vintage vinyl records.

Completing the ground floor is a smaller outdoor area, a guest bedroom, and two bathrooms. Upstairs are three bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. A porch acts as a divide between the master bedroom and children’s rooms.

Many contemporary homes in Amagansett share a similar aesthetic that pairs timber siding and pitched metal roofs, as seen at a cedar-clad “modern barn” by Studio Zung, while others have more adventurous designs. Examples include a house shaded with strips of canvas and a residence with a dramatically cantilevered upper floor – both by Bates Masi.

Nicole Hollis creates blackened wood library for its San Francisco studio

Interior design studio Nicole Hollis has inserted charred black boxes for storing project materials into its new offices in San Francisco.

Self-designed office by Nicole Hollis studio

Led by interior designer Nicole Hollis, the team transformed a 5,000-square-foot (464-square-metre) space to create its offices inside a former industrial building at 1000 Brannan Street.

A monochrome palette based on white-painted walls and poured concrete flooring runs throughout the space, forming a blank backdrop for designs in the main workspace.

“We desired a ‘white canvas’ where we could clear our minds of daily clutter and focus on a creating a new concept for each and every design project,” said a statement from the studio.

“It is important to keep the studio uplifting and inspiring,” the statement continued. “We often have furniture designers, artists and fabricators drop off materials and furnishings to place around the studio for inspiration – it’s always rotating.”

Several existing walls were stripped out to create an open-plan workspace. The reconfiguration also allows plenty of natural light to flood in from the existing industrial-style, steel-framed windows and opens up views to the surrounding city.

Custom white desks are arranged in rows and topped with Fontana Arte Dome pendant lights. “With its natural light and minimalist sensibility, the studio acts as a laboratory where we can experiment,” the studio continued.

Instead of walls, the team inserted a pair volumes to separate the studio into two areas and house materials for drawing and model making. These cubes are covered in horizontal wooden boards that are charred black using the Japanese technique known as shou sugi ban.

The process is more commonly employed to preserve exterior cladding, but offers a contrast to the pared-back surroundings in this interior.

Hollis also designed the “brass-clad box” as a reference to the work of minimalist American artist Donald Judd. It sits in front of the blackened volumes and forms a reception desk.

The team chose a darker colour scheme and homely furnishing to decorate its kitchen, dining and lounge area, where employees are encouraged to relax and socialise.

A bleach stain runs along the top of the metal splash back, placed on the back wall of the nearly all-black kitchen. Dark cabinets are located beneath a counter of coal-coloured stone and inky gloss tiles. Hand soap bottles and plates are also black to match the decor.

The custom-made black metal island is topped with white calacatta marble to add a point of contrast. Employees can eat and chat around the island, or at a black dining table. A wall lamp featuring moveable arms that resemble spider’s legs, designed by Milan-based Dimore Studio, illuminates the social area.

“The dining table is large to have lunch family style, which allows employees to gather at lunchtime or have informal design meetings,” said the studio.

At the entrance to the studio, the team’s informal meeting room is covered with textural dark plaster and features a marble fireplace. A pendant light designed by New York-based Bec Brittain hangs above a black sofa and a mid-century-style wooden chair. Other decorations include planting over the central metallic table and a candle set on a small side table.

Homely stylings are also found in a series of meeting rooms, where pictures with black and white frames hang in a collage. Sliding glass doors to these rooms are fitted with gridded black frames that mimic the design of the existing windows.

Nicole Hollis joins a number of creative studios who have similarly designed their own workplaces. Among recently completed examples are architecture firm Woods Bagot’s Downtown Manhattan offices and Studio11’s colourful and texture workspace in Minsk.

Folded panel reflects light from BO Lamp by Bandido Studio

Mexico’s Bandido Studio collaborated with designer Cesar Núñez to create this table lamp, featuring a lozenge-shaped reflector that is folded down the middle.

The BO Lamp was designed so its light source points at the creased metal sheet, providing an ambient glow.

BO Lamp by Bandido Studio

“Through observation and experimenting with different materials, the BO Lamp generates a warm and soft light that reflects on the V-shaped metal sheet,” said Bandido Studio, founded by Alejandro Campos and Joel Rojas.

“The inspiration came through an iterative process, which involved watching how light is transformed by nature – how it reflects and gets absorbed through different elements.”

BO Lamp by Bandido Studio

The body of the lamp has a matte finish to diffuse the reflection. A touch-activated sensor hidden in the cylindrical base also allows the user to change the intensity of the LED light and alter the mood.

The folded portion, which looks like abstract wings or petals, attached to the base almost halfway up.

The angled top from which the light is emitted at a 45-degree angle towards the centre of the vertical crease line.

The lamp comes thee colour options, which Bandido Studio calls Champagne White, Oxford Gray and Peach Rose, and uses across its range of industrial designs.

The duo, based in Puebla, has launched several lighting and furniture designs over the past two years. They are among a growing number young designers living and working in the country, who present work during Design Week Mexico in the capital each October.

At last year’s event, projects exhibited included lamps that pair pink volcanic rock and copper, a collection of “brutalist” furniture, and screens and lights woven by artisans in Oaxaca.

This silent blender is for ninjas

bl1502a_blender_1

Your midnight smoothie craving doesn’t need to go unfulfilled anymore. The BL1502A (it could use a catchier name) from Midea can blend pretty much anything… and that too in silence! Its double enclosure cuts out the whirring sound that blenders are notoriously famous for, reducing it to a 10-decibel level, which is about as loud as a human breathing.

Even though it’s as quiet as a mouse, the BL1502A looks incredibly heavy duty, with its robust design. The control panel sits at a 45° angle, making it easy to view the display and operate the controls, and the blender itself even has a heating function letting you cook your soups and broths as you blitz the ingredients together… in pin-drop silence.

The BL1502A blender is a winner of the iF Design Award for the year 2018.

Designers: Lu Yangzong, Yang Chao & Zhao Pengyu (Midea).
