A Road Trip Around Dubrovnik with the New Nissan Micra

Constance Guisset designs puffed-up plates for Moustache

These plates by Constance Guisset have the illusion of being soft and malleable, but they are actually solid ceramic.

The Canova collection was created by the French designer for brand Moustache, and launched during the Maison&Objet furniture fair earlier this month.

Guisset, who previously designed a tabletop machine for wine tasting, based the collection on visual trickery, and used hand moulding to create the plates’ uneven, puffy-looking surface.

“Canova is a collection of trompe-l’oeil plates, a tribute to sculpture,” said Guisset. “Their shapes were first carefully modelled by hand. This patient work creates an illusion of smoothness in the lively and tense matter of the ceramics.”

Each plate comes in two sizes and five colours – white, green, water mint, burgundy and light pink.

The Canova collection launched at this month’s Maison&Objet furniture fair, which took place in Paris from 20 to 24 January 2017.

Products that also launched at the fair include a collection of reimagined kitchen tools by Alain Gilles and a coffee table based on the “restraint and detailing” of a bentwood box associated with Shaker folklife.

Guisset founded her eponymous studio in 2009. She studied business before enrolling at ENSCI design school, from which she graduated in 2007.

Sprayed polyurethane lends rocky appearance to orchard house by Šépka Architekti

A small concrete stalk supports the bulbous form of this unconventional home by Czech practice Šépka Architekti, which stands in a steeply sloping orchard on the outskirts of Prague.

Šépka Architekti created the unusually shaped House in the Orchard in response to six large orchard trees that occupy the garden.

Rising three stories high, it features a wide base that tapers upwards in opposition to the surrounding trees, which have narrow tree trunks and large foliage on top.

A small room with a large window sits on top of a fuller bottom containing living spaces.

The 80-square-metre structure has a timber frame, which is clad in plywood boards and sprayed in a layer of polyurethane to achieve its uneven facades. Inside, the wooden frame structure and birch plywood boards remain exposed.

The whole form is coated in a protective layer of glossy grey waterproof spray, and gives the house the appearance it has been moulded from clay.

Swiss architect Christian Kerez used a similar technique to create a cloud-like pavilion from fibre-cement at last year’s Venice Architecture Biennale.

“The family house endeavours through its small size and character to integrate itself among these trees,” said the architects.

“The house is designed as a wooden house with reinforced concrete foundation, which is minimised on the steep slope only to a concrete foot,” they added. “Considering the difficult conditions, a classical foundation would be more demanding financially.”

Given the steeply sloped site, the architects raised the residence above ground by a reinforced concrete pillar. The elevated position also makes the most of views towards Prague’s Brook Rokytka valley below.

On the ground floor, the living and dining room occupies the northern side of the house, featuring a table set in front of the large window, origami-like wooden chairs and a black wood-burning stove.

The kitchen, a small toilet, and a bedroom are housed in two volumes on the southern side, with the entrance hall wedged in between.

A staircase in the living areas leads to the master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and dressing room. From here, another set of steps provides access to the  small study on the final floor of the house.

Contemporary furniture and richly textured fabrics update "vanilla" home in Hampstead

London-based studio Black & Milk has used a neutral colour scheme with rich textures to upgrade the interior of a property completed last year in London’s Hampstead.

Modern New Home by Black & Milk

The single-storey, three-bedroom residence sits in the grounds of a Victorian mansion block. It was completed by Claridge Architects in 2015, but the interior design had been overseen by a developer.

Black & Mill was brought on board to update the interior for its new owner, who agreed it was “time to ditch the ‘vanilla’ and inject some personality” into the home.

“They loved its location in Hampstead, north London, a neighbourhood with a village feel bordered by heathland and woods, but weren’t keen on the generic, luxury look the developer had chosen for its interior,” said the studio.

“The house is minimal and contemporary, yet its decor was more suited to a period home with high ceilings,” it added. “The new owners wanted modern interior design, to complement the property’s exciting architecture.”

Wide oak boards cover the heated floors of the living spaces while hemp rugs sourced from Australia complement the natural fibre wallpaper of the open-planned lounge, which opens onto the garden through floor-to-ceiling windows.

A contemporary fireplace and TV protrude from a monochrome chimney breast, creating a focal point for a range of seating, including a grey corner sofa from Scandinavian design firm Norr11 and red leather Clarissa hood armchair designed by Patricia Urquiola.

The study is furnished with pieces including the Harold Desk by Luca Nichetto and Porto Chair by Matthew Hilton.

“Creative styling transforms a good-looking house into a really personal and complete home. That’s why we spent lots of time choosing the right accessories and textiles,” said the studio.

Three round bespoke pendant lights from the Philippines hang from the high ceiling above an extendable wooden table, while white linen curtains allow natural light to flood the dining area.

Black timber forms the splashback of the kitchen, contrasting the flush white countertops to create a monochromatic space dotted with plants, which can be seen in every room of the house.

A textured wallpaper forms a feature wall in the colourful master bedroom, where a mustard velvet sofa that sits at the rear of a navy upholstered bed.

the floor-to-ceiling sliding door of the master bedroom opens up to a seated patio area, which maintains an element of privacy from the rest of the garden due to the L-shaped wall.

Light blue wallpaper with a faint silhouette of a forest creates a feature wall behind a salmon bed in the guest bedroom, while the remainder of the room remains neutral in colour.

The guest shower concealed behind a bespoke glass partition is framed in black iron, which echoes the framework of the sink and floor-to-ceiling storage unit.

Rich textures continue through to the children’s bedrooms, with a large floral print wallpaper and pink curtains dressing the windows.

“Dusky-rose curtains complement, to create a scheme that’s unexpected and not remotely babyish,” said the designers.

Frames which have been individually designed by the studio dress the international artwork collected by the clients and can be seen throughout the property.

Diagonal strips of timber clad the exterior of the Claridge Architects-designed residence, which also features a rooftop garden that can be used by neighbouring residents.

Safe and Secure Cloud Storage with Stone

stones8

STONE combines cloud storage with mobile charging in one super-sleek external unit. The shape was inspired by water droplets (a nod to the cloud) as well as stones (a nod to security). It makes it easy to store, organize, stream and share all your music, movies, photos, and important documents with anyone living in your household and, unlike most boxy external units, it’s one you won’t mind leaving out for the world to see. Better yet, it doubles as a convenient port where you can charge the same devices that use it!
