Apps to easily organize storage bins

Three years ago, I mentioned a fun trick in a post about digitizing user manuals. Basically, it works like this:

  1. Save the manual in an Evernote note.
  2. Use that note’s unique URL to create a QR Code.
  3. Print that code on adhesive-backed printer paper.
  4. Affix the code sticker to the washer, drill, etc., for instant access to its manual.

Bella Storage does a similar thing for storage totes but it reduces the number of steps and apps, and greatly enhances the result. The app, available for iPhones and Android, is the heart of the solution. When you’re putting items into a Bella storage bin, use it to note the contents, give the bin a name (“Halloween decorations,” “Summer clothes”, etc.) and give it a category, like “holiday” or “sports.” Lastly, add a location.

Later, when you’re looking for that one swimsuit, the jack-o-lantern carving tools, or the bike helmets, Bella tells you what bin it’s in and where it is located. It works in the other direction, too. Simply walk up to a bin, scan the code on the side and “see” exactly what’s inside. You don’t need to pull it down and lift the lid.

Of course, there are other solutions that offer something similar. Box Me Up works much the same, and has both a mobile-friendly, browser-based interface as well as an Android app. Another option is I.M Organized, which lets you inventory all of your stuff by simply scanning a bar code, and also generates QR Codes for you to affix to boxes or bins.

Finally, there’s the DIY method I mentioned earlier.

Good luck! Try out any of these apps for quick retrieval of your stuff. Happy storing!

How to Make PVC Look Like Wood

If you’re building a set, an installation or props, it might be helpful to have a ready source of wooden poles of decent diameter. But the dowel rods at your local hardware store stop at 1 1/4 in diameter, and turning longer, larger pieces isn’t practical.

Pennsylvania-based Jason Poplinski has come up with a quick, straightforward way to modify PVC pipe into a convincing facsimile of wood. Best of all, it uses inexpensive and commonly-available tools and materials.

By the bye, there’s holes in the one in the last photo because he’s making a musical instrument. Obviously you could make whatever you wanted, though. Check out his full Instructable on it.

5 Ways to Score on Super Bowl Sunday with Social Media

5 Ways to Score on Super Bowl Sunday with Social Media was originally published by the American Marketing Association.

Big or small, brands have a chance to pick up steam—and perhaps go viral—any given Super Bowl Sunday.

Influence Central’s 2017 Biggest Game in Football report says 78% of consumers engage in social media while watching the Super Bowl.

According to the report:

  • 38% want to share their thoughts on the commercials.
  • 32% want to react to the game.
  • 18% want to share photos of game-day parties.
  • 10% want to see what their network is doing.
  • 2% want to share strategy about the game.

Stacy DeBroff, CEO and founder of Influence Central, says even smaller brands have a chance of getting in front of a highly focused, gigantic audience on during Super Bowl Sunday.

Here are five tips for getting the attention of one of the biggest audiences of the year:

1. Focus on Pinterest before the game.

There’s a lot going on pre-game, according to DeBroff. This is where brands can focus on Pinterest, as 68% of people surveyed by Influence Central say they go to this social media platform when planning for game-day parties. Another 26% say they focus on Facebook and 17.2% say Instagram.
Super Bowl Food on Pinterest

“Over the weekend, everyone is going to be looking to set up these parties,” she says. “It turns out that people really want to design [parties themselves]. When it comes to this sort of creative casual fare, they’re turning to Pinterest to be included. That’s a moment where brands can put up—if you’re a food brand—pictures of a party spread or the recipe for your bean dip in the shape of a football or the colors of the teams.”

2. Focus on Facebook and Twitter during the game.

Parties are getting smaller for the 2017 Super Bowl, DeBroff says, as fans now have big screens at home and an instant ability to tap into an online party via social media. During the Super Bowl, fans look for real-time news on Twitter and their friends’ reactions on Facebook.

“When you realize the primary focus is going to be on Facebook and tweeting, it gives marketers a focus in advance,” DeBroff says, adding a possible example of posting branded picture every time a team scores a touchdown.

3. Use geotargeted influencers.

With so many people on social media during the Super Bowl, there will be plenty of people posting updates, looking at posts and liking them. DeBroff says brands should use this to their advantage by finding geotargeted influencers to place brand products or services before the big game.

“In this case, visuals are really amazing,” DeBroff says. Another great way to expand reach is actively searching for someone who is using a brand’s product, then amplifying what the social media user is posting. “The amplification of that is an opportunity for this elusive real-time marketing.”

Targeting users can be a great way for smaller or regional brands to get involved on game day, DeBroff says. “You want to reach your passionate consumers who are tied into the game,” she says.

4. Put a twist on the commercials.

While it isn’t legally advisable to hijack a hashtag or use imagery from another brand, DeBroff says companies can still find unique ways to play off of Super Bowl commercials.

“The reason people are spending a lot of time on social is we now have a consumer demographic who all considers themselves to be discerning consumers,” DeBroff says. “We’re always analyzing the creative and the messaging to come up with our own determination of creditability.”

Companies can find ways to send their own message after an ad airs, DeBroff says–perhaps in an industry their brand works in, perhaps something a bit more creative.

DeBroff gives an example of a craft beer company playing off a Budweiser commercial by immediately posting a status, tweet or picture featuring a statistic on how many people drink craft beer during the Super Bowl, or something as easy as a toast to craft beer.

“You know within an audience [of beer drinkers] there will be people who feel strongly about craft beer,” DeBroff says. “You’re not hijacking, but adding something relevant.”

5. Be creative to go viral.

What’s at stake as a marketer? It could be a few stray impressions and a day or two of work, or it could be a brand being unveiled for the first time to an audience of millions. DeBroff says the only way to truly know what happens is to make some creative content and get involved.

“It means that you have a chance of getting a very focused audience,” she says. “If you can capture a small amount their attention, you have a chance of going viral.”

Don’t leave home without this iPad Pro Case!

atech_ipad_case_1

Most third party accessory makers rely on Apple’s short-sighted approach to design. An entire ecosystem has been created to rectify Apple’s design “errors”, if you may. From beautiful battery cases for the iPhone (as opposed to Apple’s ugly camel-hump case), to the case that puts the headphone jack back on your iPhone, to even tiny accessories or stickers that help you keep track of or disguise your Earpods, there is a thriving industry of beautifully designed products that honestly make the Apple experience a memorable one.

It’s strange how Apple has aggressively paired and marketed the iPad Pro along with the Apple Pencil, but none of Apple’s cases really integrate the two. You inevitably have to carry the Pencil separately in your pocket and if that doesn’t spell trouble, I don’t know what does! ATECH comes in to fill that void with their iPad Pro Case that not only does the job of protecting your iPad Pro, it also doubles up as a dock (with two positions), comes with smart-wake and sleep abilities, and boasts of a nice recessed groove that allows you to fit your Apple Pencil in securely.

The ATECH iPad Pro case aims its guns directly at Apple’s iPad Pro smart cover. At less than half the price, it gives you the more than what Apple’s own case promises. The ATECH iPad Pro case comes in 4 colors that give it a professional demeanor. All four colors (black, grey, red and navy) come with a leatherette finish on the outside that feels great to touch. A microfiber fabric on the inside protects the iPad from scratches while also keeping the screen free of dust. The tablet fits cozily into the TPU case and a dedicated slot for the Apple Pencil means that the two gadgets that were made for each other will always be paired together. A match made in heaven, honestly! Plus, did I mention that you can get it at less than half the price?!

Foster + Partners reveals cascading tower complex for Mecca pilgrims

Foster + Partners has won a competition for a complex of stepped towers in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, providing accommodation for pilgrims en route to the world’s largest mosque.

Foster + Partners news

Foster + Partner‘s design will be located between the Haramain High-speed Rail Station and the Grand Mosque, making it a key part of the pilgrims’ journey towards the mosque’s Holy Kaaba building in Mecca, or Makkah.

The mixed-use scheme will include luxury hotels and apartments for the rapidly growing number of visitors passing through Mecca.

Clusters of vertical structures will be arranged in a stepped formation that references the dense urban plan of traditional Arabic cities, as well as the rolling shape of the surrounding mountainous terrain.

“Makkah (Mecca) is one of the most unique cities in the world,” said Foster + Partners senior executive partner Luke Fox. “As the home of the Holy Kaaba – the holiest site in Islam – it presents a special challenge and honour for any developer and architect.”

“Our design sets out to create an innovative building form that will be respectful to the scale and importance of the Grand Mosque,” he continued.

The scheme will be named the Jabal Omar Development afters its Saudi Arabian developer Jabal Omar Development Company.

Foster + Partners news

A ramp integrated with the topography of the site will take pilgrims beneath a series of large pillars, which branch outwards as they reach towards the ceiling.

Natural light will flood these pillar-filled spaces through patterned metalwork that is intended to heighten the experience of visiting the Grand Mosque.

“Our endeavour has been to make the experience special and appropriate to its unique location,” Fox explained. “The design follows a philosophy of ‘luxury with humility’ with an understated elegance throughout the development.”

Hotel rooms and apartments are orientated towards the holy site. Each bedroom will feature a dedicated space for private prayer and contemplation. Large openings will provide views to the Grand Mosque and Holy Kaaba – a building at the centre of the mosque, which Muslims are expected to pray towards.

Foster + Partners news

British firm Zaha Hadid Architects has also recently revealed plans for a project in Saudi Arabia, a preservation centre for a UNESCO-protected site in Diriyah.

Norman Foster and his London-based firm Foster + Partners was ranked at number 13 in the Dezeen Hot List, a countdown of the most newsworthy players in the design industry.

The Jabal Omar Development is one of a number of grand projects that the firm has under development. Others include Poland’s tallest tower, a set of twin buildings for Miami and the second-tallest building in San Francisco.
