Designed by Fraser Muggeridge studio, the cover of a new book of poems by the artist Fabian Peake makes an abstract collage out of the book’s jazzy two-word title, Loose Monk…
Stretching the words from the top of the cover to the bottom, the green and red type takes on a pattern of its own; the curves of the double O and the S at the top and the legs of the M, N and K at the bottom providing some symmetry, too.
According to publishers Ridinghouse, “Using repetition or varying spatial gaps and pauses to convey emotion, atmosphere and a sense of time, the poems of painter and poet Fabian Peake are surprising and disquieting.
“Peake draws on nature, memory and everyday life to create works that, although concrete in look, are distinct from the hard abstraction of concrete poetry. Comprising 41 works in verse, shape poems and abstract pieces written over a 20-year period, the volume’s design is sensitive to the unique visual look of each poem.”

More from the Passionswege: Young Portuguese design duo Pedrita Studio were paired up with central Vienna glass workshop Karl Stiefelmeyer Glaserei to share skills and explore some new avenues.
Designers Rita Joao and Pedro Ferreira were inspired by the detailed craftsmanship that the workshop staff gave to huge sheets of mirror and glass, wondering if these skills could be turned to small scale objects. Rita and Pedro set out designing a range of table top objects that could be made simply from the huge array of glass types and mirrors in stock at the shop. The designers incorporated colourful felts—the material used extensively in glass handling for protection—giving some lovely contrast to the pieces.
Although Stiefelmeyer have yet to make any moves to produce the objects, they did allow the designers to set up a showroom in a disused office room at the front of the shop to display the wares.

All Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!
This week’s selection is a quintessential example of a unitasker. It may very well be the Platonic Form of the unitasker. When discussing unitaskers in the future, it is the French Toast Stick Maker that I shall use as my example:
This is a stand-alone, 44 sq. in. appliance whose sole purpose is to make French toast sticks. Not plain French toast, but French toast sticks. A food you can make with a multipurpose pan and a multipurpose knife with less effort than with this machine. By owning this, you would obviously sacrifice space but you also would waste time — as the plates of the French Toast Stick Maker are not removable so you have to clean them by hand (whereas you can put the pan and knife in a dishwasher).
If this were a Taylor Swift song, she would summarize by pointing out the incontrovertible Truth: unitasker gonna unitask.

Pour l’événement « Giving Shelter », 14 agences d’architecture ont été commissionnées pour imaginer des abris très amusants pour félins. Ils ont ainsi imaginé des arrangements sculpturales et anguleux pour que les chats puissent se livrer à de vrais jeux d’escalade ou se reposer. Plusieurs modèles sont disponibles en images, prises par le photographe Grey Crawford.
