Watch This: Remembering Bill Moggridge

Friends, colleagues, family members, and fans of Bill Moggridge gathered recently in New York City to remember and celebrate the life of the pioneering yet playful designer, teacher, and Cooper-Hewitt director, who died last fall at the age of 69. After a moving introduction by acting director Caroline Baumann (the museum committee tasked with selecting a worthy successor to Moggridge need not look further than his longtime deputy), Smithsonian secretary Wayne Clough took to the podium, describing the man of the evening as “a perpetual pin to deflate our pomposity” and marveling at Moggridge’s take on dressing up: “He could pull off wearing a t-shirt, and I never could.”

A charming video tribute created by one of Moggridge’s two sons was followed by a discussion with Bill Buxton, David Kelley, Bruce Nussbaum, Ellen Lupton, and moderator Helen Walters. “He really knew what the future was going to bring,” said Kelley, who joined up with Moggridge and Mike Nuttall in 1991 to form IDEO and credited Moggridge with instilling an enduring openness in the global design consultancy. “He was just this kind of teacher person,” added Kelley. “I never had an interaction with him where I didn’t feel better afterwards.” Enjoy more Moggridge memories in the below video of the event.

Nokia Love

The Nokia Note is a concept phone that integrates a music player within its body. Just like a mamma roo and her joey, the Windows Phone 8 phablet sports cool specs like measuring 5.5 inches diagonal and a 1280 x 768 pixel resolution with 1080p. An integrated stylus and the detachable Nokia music player on the back, give it the added edge. Looks like there are still some Nokia fans out there who want to give the device another chance.

iWatch

iKnow, we all waiting in anticipation for something spectacular to come forth and the iWatch rumors are pretty strong. So if we were to indulge in fantasy for a minute, then this is how Esben Oxholm thinks the Apple team would design the phone/watch. Heavily inspired by the look of the iPhone 5 and sporting a minimalistic, sleek look, the watch is crafted with black aluminum on the outside and a thin layer of soft matte rubber on the inside.

It has got the highly recognizable round home button as the only physical button. The rest of the fun happens on the newly developed slightly double curved touch screen. The iWatch can be fitted to your liking, by removing or adding spacers in the lower part of the bendy bracelet.

Nice Look at the Design, and Design Process, Behind Volvo’s New FH Truck

volvo-fh-design.jpg

Those of you enrolled in transportation design programs probably dream of designing swoopy cars. It’s a select few of you that are interested in trucks, even though it is trucks that have brought everything—your Wacom tablet, the bag you carry to school, the clothes on your back—to the store where you bought it. The importance of trucks in our product-driven society cannot be understated, yet we rarely hear about their design, or the design teams behind them.

Thankfully, rectifying that is this video from Volvo, where Design Director Rikard Orell and his team tell you about the design thinking—style vs. functionality, heart vs. brain—that went into their new FH cab-over:

French designer Sasufi used reclaimed wooden doors to recreate the decorative panelling of nineteenth century French interiors on the walls of this patisserie on the outskirts of Melbourne.

Bright white paint unifies the assortment of doors, which are arranged in a patchwork over two walls.

Shelving and display cupboards are slotted around the panels to present brightly-coloured packages containing herbal teas.

A low counter extends from one of the walls and is also lined with white-painted doors. Glass cabinets sit on top and are filled with a selection of macaroons and cakes.

The third wall of the patisserie is coloured with deep purple and decorated with antique porcelain plates.

“The interior design reflects two primary intentions: simplicity and contrast,” said Sasufi. “A clean white canvas has been created to form a backdrop to the colourful display of macarons and luxurious Kusmi Tea. A warm purple wall facing opposite provides a sense of contrast.”

White-painted chairs surround the rectangular tables and stand out against the dark tiles of the floor.

A small kitchen is located at the rear of the cafe and a leaded-glass window offers a glimpse inside.

Branding for the patisserie was completed by Melbourne creative agency Sense.
