Wood and Concrete

Elomax’s new DY10 lamp is a stunning contrast between the industrial and organic. The concrete base has two ash wood blades, slightly offset from one another to create a beautiful light pattern. I love the warmth mixed with the cold. Not sure when it’ll be available but I’m definitely adding these to my DO WANT list. I kinda wish there were miniature solar powered ones too designed with a stake so I can line my walkway to the front door.

image Hats are great change-up to your daily outfit to create a fun sporty look. However it could be a challenge to maintain the chic fashionable vibe. That is exactly why we love this Leather Brimmed Hat from Free People. It features both trendy and classy style with the combination of leather brim and corduroy upper. While the baseball cap style makes this hat fun and simple. the corduroy and leather makes it so chic and sophisticated. Subtle white dots painted on the corduroy is yet another groovy detailing on this hat.

Morpholio Trace now with Automotive and Jewelry Design Templates

Trace_Auto_template_2.jpg

When Morpholio Projects released their Trace app for iPad at the end of September, the architectural community was abuzz with the possibilities that a digital version of trace paper would afford the profession. The app allowed users to instantly draw on top of imported images or background templates, layering comments or ideas to generate immediate, intelligent sketches that are easy to circulate.

Developed by architects, Trace allows users to trace over images in order to offer feedback or convey information quickly and graphically. Additionally, the app easily connects to an online community through their Eye Time function allowing a global community of users to provide feedback on work shared in public arenas: Crit, Pinup and Community.

Today, Trace announced the release of Automotive Design and Jewelry Design templates for their growing base of users. Working with Brett Stoltz, Industrial Design Transportation Track student from the University of Cincinnati, on the automotive templates and Liz Ricketts, co-founder of design education organization (the)OR, for the jewelry design templates, Morpholio Projects hopes to enhance the interative process for product designers. In conversation with Core77, Ciara Seymour, Morpholio UX Director, tell us, “The inherently iterative process of design lies central to the ability to reimagine within known constraints. These templates begin to provide students with a variety of basic and advanced perspective views as a foundation from which to begin designing.”

Unitasker Wednesday: Double Dip Bowl

All Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!

This is one of those items that when you see it your first thought is, “ingenious!” Then, you pause for a moment and remember you don’t own a restaurant that serves guests olives as appetizers. The Double Dip Bowl:

Let’s all agree that the name is confusing. The nesting bowls are designed so you can hide unsightly pits and shells into the lower, hidden bowl after you eat the yummy part of the nut or cherry or olive. There isn’t really anything dipping or double dipping about this in the least. It really should be called something like a Shell Shrouder Bowl or a Squirrel Away Bowl. The name is broken.

Let’s also agree that while it’s a neat idea, you would rarely (maybe never) use it. Instead of a useful bowl, it would be a dust collector. When sitting home alone with a bag of pistachios, you just put the shells in a regular bowl or straight into the trash. You don’t care if you see the remnants of your snack. This is one of those fancy bowls just for parties — and you probably don’t serve things with shells or pits at parties because those things are messy. Also, you know your guests will be shaking hands with each other, and no one wants to shake hands with someone who just had his hands in his mouth retrieving an olive pit.

Home Away From Home

This temporary mobile housing design aims to provide readily available shelter to those affected by a variety emergencies and disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and fires. Structurally, the unit is composed almost entirely of compressed oriented strand board, making it lightweight and easy to construct. Transportable as a small cube, the design can be set and expanded by lowering one side to create a separate section for sleeping quarters.
