WA|HH by Philippe Starck and David Edwards

WAHH by Philippe Starck and David Edwards

French designer Philippe Starck has created an aerosol spray that lets users enjoy alcohol without getting drunk or hungover.

WAHH by Philippe Starck and David Edwards

Each pump of the WA|HH spray delivers just 50-75 microliters of alcohol but it’s spread over a much wider surface area than a drop directly applied to the tongue, releasing vapour that gives users a light-headed sensation.

WAHH by Philippe Starck and David Edwards

The feeling is temporary and there are no ill effects because there’s not enough alcohol in the body to sustain drunkenness – consuming the entire canister wouldn’t bring you close to inebriation. In fact you’d need 1000 sprays just to equal the alcohol in a standard shot.

The spray can be applied to food or directly into the mouth and comes in two flavours: apparently Flash Quantum resembles Vodka while Demon Quantum is more spicy.

Starck developed the spray with David Edwards, founder of Paris Science and art store Le Laboratoire where the first two flavours are on sale.

Here’s some more information from Le Laboratoire:

At the conclusion of its 14th experiment, Le Laboratoire presents the exhibition WA|HH, dedicated to the new mini spray of flavor WA|HH Quantum Sensations invented by Philippe Starck and David Edwards. An invitation to experi- ence an explosion of culinary sensation in the smallest imaginable form.

At the origin of the experiment: an encounter. That of Philippe Starck, creator of international renown and David Edwards, founder of Le Laboratoire, Harvard Professor, and creator of the new field of aerosol cuisine.Their commonality? The re- invention of daily experience.Their exploratory ground? The immateriality of taste and texture. From their encounter comes WA|HH Quantum Sensations, a mini spray of flavor that, while extremely small (each cartridge holds 2 milliliters of liquid), delivers 20-25 actuations that provide a gustatory and olfactive effect equivalent to a volume 1000 times as voluminous. WA|HH Quantum Sensations can be enjoyed as a spray directly into the mouth or onto foods of all kinds.

The Briefest Light-Headedness

Imagine the possibility of enjoying the pleasure of alcohol without worrying about negative consequences, to have the sensa- tion of light-headedness, without the risk of losing your senses, not to say utter drunkenness. To have the sensorial pleasure of alcohol without posing a threat to your health. This is the potential of WA|HH Quantum Sensations. The capacity to liber- ate alcohol flavors and transient vapor with minute quantities of alcohol in the form of tiny micro-particles*.The vapor from a single actuation produces a slight light-headedness, but it passes almost immediately.Taste and memory of an intense sensation remain. The quantity of alcohol that enters the body, what we call a quantum, is so small that the effects of WA|HH Quantum Sensations are transient, like an emotion.

A Sensorial Exploration

Among the videos, images and scientific explanations, the exhibition of the two first flavors of the series, WA|HH Flash Quantum and WA|HH Demon Quantum, invite the visitor to powerful and distinctive sensations.Tested by spraying directly into the mouth or onto sweet and salty bites of food (to experience in the Showroom or at the Ephemeral Bar), the surprise is gripping. As Philippe Starck says – “Everyone has an occasional need of light-headedness, distraction, and another place … But our societies and codes of amusement have led to the over-consumption of alcoholic beverages as a kind of social placebo. The consequences are too familiar. With David Edwards, we asked ourselves whether we might provide the same agreeable sensation as comes with a sip of alcohol without running the risk of drunkenness. And WA|HH was born. Accent life with a magic wand, that was our desire”.

“What happens with the Wa|HH? i take my Wa|HH and with a single spray i feel a touch of euphoria thanks to an infinitesimal dose, a thousand times less than a glass of alcohol. the Wa|HH is a modern and intelligent alternative aligned with our own evolution, as one of the clear signs of part of the intelligent human pro- duction is dematerialization” – Philippe Starck.

“WaHH Quantum sensations contains in each quantum of flavor just 2 ml of liquid, and yet produces 20-25 actuations of vaporous sensation. it’s ability to deliver flavor with each actuation that grows in
intensity with the vapor cloud of millions of tiny micro-droplets makes WaHH an exciting food spray for the future” – David Edwards.

Interview: Johanna Agerman-Ross at Dezeen Studio

Milan 2012: when Johanna Agerman-Ross from Disegno magazine came into Dezeen Studio in Milan, she spoke to us about the future of print magazines and current design trends.

Disegno launched its second issue in Milan and Johanna shared her ambitions for the magazine and her thoughts on why print is still relevant.

She also discusses trends amongst young designers, who are finding alternative ways to market themselves with entrepreneurial thinking and a return to local craft, giving Hacked Lab at La Rinascente from this year and Milan Uncut from last year as examples.

We published an abridged version of this interview in our Tuesday TV show (below).

Dezeen was filming and editing all week from Dezeen Studio powered by Jambox at MOST. See all the TV shows here.

Contemporary Days: The Designs of Robin & Lucienne Day

Designed in Hackney: TN29 by Le Gun and Tracey Neuls

LE GUN and Tracey Neuls

Designed in Hackney: illustration collective Le Gun have collaborated with footwear designer Tracey Neuls to create a range of shoes inspired by items discovered inside a suitcase in a Hackney basement.

LE GUN and Tracey Neuls

Le Gun created a drawing based on the objects and the life of their imagined owner, and each shoe in the limited edition is covered by a different part of the image.

LE GUN and Tracey Neuls

The interior of Tracey Neuls’ Shoreditch shop is decorated with Le Gun’s illustrations and their work is exhibited alongside the shoes.

LE GUN and Tracey Neuls

The shop opened at the end of last year on Redchurch Street, beyond the Hackney border. Le Gun have their studio by London Fields and Neuls lives in Hackney too.

Here’s some more information from LE GUN:

“Its of the trout tickling, dada loving, jazz pirate George Melly at a parade inspired by James Ensor’s painting ‘Entry of Christ’ into Brussels. The LE GUN version is: The entry of Marvin Gaye into Brussels… Marvin Gaye is riding into town on a donkey. He spent a lot of time in Belgium trying to get off crack. We have done a series of drawings based around the contents of a suitcase we found in the basement of a masonic cobblers in Hackney, which we believe belonged to the late George Melly. The drawing reflects our affection for the often overlooked cultural suburb of Belgium. We like the idea of a young Belgian surrealist wearing our Tracey Neuls shoes while becoming slowly intoxicated at A La Mort Subite…” – LE GUN

Tracey Neuls and LE GUN

Pioneering and of a single mind, Tracey Neuls choose her new shop where there is already great spirit and individuality – not unlike her original footwear. Building on the success of her West London Marylebone shop, she embarked on her second space – Eastside!

LE GUN and Tracey Neuls

To celebrate this new venture, Tracey Neuls, famous for her creative collaborations has teamed up with the London illustration collective LE GUN.

LE GUN and Tracey Neuls

Often described as ‘the gutter looking up to the sky’ LE GUN is responsible for some of the most thought provoking illustration work.‘Parade’ was one such piece that caught Neuls’ eye. “The idea of bringing the illustrative subject matter into movement via the actual body part was irresistible.”

LE GUN and Tracey Neuls

LE GUN painted the shop walls in their signature style, ink in one hand paintbrush in the other – an instant freestyle application of meandering illustration. They treated the retail space like a gallery. The combination of using another artist’s drawing with a Tracey Neuls shoe design makes for a perfect collaboration. It’s an enjoyable experience seeing a drawing being translated onto a shoe. Neuls, known for her keen eye for detail saw the instant potential of translating the art work to textile. Each limited edition shoe has a different part of the drawing, so therefore tells a different part of the story. The print was recreated as wrapping paper, so the narrative continues inside and out!

OLO Fragrance

Diesel fuel, tobacco, damp dirt and pine tree perfume from Portland, OR

OLO_1.jpg

Perfumer Heather Sielaff hand-blends idiosyncratic, mostly masculine scents for her label OLO Fragrance in her apartment in north Portland. “I’m not really girly,” she admits, and her perfumes tend to be intriguing rather than sweetly attractive. For example, Forêt’s notes of pine and vetiver recall the scent of earth and damp northwestern trees, while Victory Wolf’s birch tar, cedar and tobacco evoke nights spent camping beside an open fire.

Sielaff recently had a commission to create the smell of diesel fuel, which succeeded but had some unexpected consequences: “[The client] turned out to be allergic,” she says.

OLO_2.jpg

“Years of practical use allowed me to get to know the individual essential oils quite intimately,” says Sielaff, who trained as a neuromuscular therapist and studied aromatherapy on the side. “The thought finally occurred to me that making perfume would give me the opportunity to utilize my knowledge in a more creative way. It was initially just a hobby and I’m still a little surprised OLO took off the way it did,” she says.

OLO_6.jpg

Undoubtedly one of the most significant elements to OLO’s appeal is Sielaff’s sense of humor. Diesel-based perfumes aren’t the only unconventional product that she’s attempted—the limited edition Make Deux room spray—interpret the pun in order to deduce its intended usage—asks the would-be customer, with tongue firmly in cheek, “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a smell?”

OLO_5.jpg OLO_7.jpg

Sielaff’s intimate knowledge of scents keeps her perfumes multi-layered, personal and complex. Many of her projects stay local and never make it out of Portland.”Some perfumes are limited edition or created for special events,” she says. One such side project was a fragrance created for the Portland-based band YACHT, called Shangri-La, that blends more than a half-dozen scents into one moody, floral concoction. She also created a limited edition art bottle and box series with Portland glass artist Andy Paiko and Portland woodworker Jason Rens.

OLO fragrances are available online or at selected retailers. For more information on Sielaff’s upcoming projects, check her blog.
