Ai Weiwei Named WSJ.‘s Innovator of the Year, Marina Abramovic to Accept the Award

0812weiwei.jpg

Another big batch of recognition is set to be placed upon artist Ai Weiwei this week. Following Art Review‘s listing of the artist as their top pick in their Power 100 ranking, the artist, who earlier this year served a three-month detainment at the hands of Chinese government officials for whom Weiwei continues to be a thorn in the side of, will be named on Thursday WSJ‘s Innovator of the Year in the art category. It’s the first year of the Innovator’s issue for the Wall Street Journal‘s magazine counterpart, with a dinner honoring the winners this Thursday evening at the MoMA, with the issue in print following this Saturday. However, despite Weiwei’s recent ever-presence, he’s still under house arrest in his native China, so it’s been planned that fellow artist Marina Abramovic will accept the honor on his behalf. At the event, the artist will join the ranks of designer Katie Grand, winning for the fashion category, Bjarke Ingels for architecture, and Chipotle founder Steve Ells for food.

Let’s Get Personal in the Netherlands with Kim Welling

Living

Let's get Personal with Kim Welling

D:: Dutch is… Being straightforward (I've been told that we can be a bit blunt, but it's just honesty, no harm intended, I promise!;-) owning more than one bike, I do feel a bit detached when not being able to ride my bike everywhere. My dotted raincoat and making the most of small houses!

Wallpaper

E:: entrance, when entering my home you will notice… Me ignoring autumn is coming and trying to grow all sorts of plants in pots and containers (even though my plant space is a bit shady, I'm just being very persistent).

TeaEntrance  Bedroom OutsideKitchen  Kimwelling

Kim10

S:: style, means… refinement and adding a personal note to what's common.

I:: interesting places in my city, Utrecht, are… the canals, especially down at the water, there are sort of little docks  where you can stroll or have a coffee or even lunch or dinner, it's quite unique and very nice in summer. Utrecht is also a very green city, we've got lot's of nice parks, my fave is the Griftpark. Oh and one more spot, the Miffy museum!

Dining

G:: gardening is something I… LOVE, especially growing edibles! I only wish I had a garden… but for now I'm doing well on my little balcony since I bought the book 'Grow great grub' by Gayla Trail, my new garden bible.

Tea

N:: new, in my home is… My Home! I just moved to a new place in a lovely green area (it's on a tiny canal with an apple tree in front of my house). I love decorating a new place and had so much fun doing this one. I used most of my existing furniture and only bought new vintage wallpaper and a vintage kitchen cabinet (I use in the livingroom). Most of the furniture I own is stuff I found 9on the street), bought vintage or inherited. I love that 'history' feeling old things have, and giving it a new life.

Kitchen

H:: hobby, I always make time for… Cooking, gardening, my friends and my rabbit Seb. He's like a dog, waiting till you get home, following you everywhere around the house, jumping on your lap to be petted. I named him after Seb Jarnot, a french illustrator…

Entrance

O:: outfit, my favorite thing to wear is… everything from Humanoid, my favorite clothes brand. It's stylish but sort of basic in a not so basic way and lasts forever.

Bedroom

M:: magazines I love to read are… Uppercase, ReadyMade and Jan (a dutch magazine)

E:: enjoy, I can't live without… my creativity. I just can't imagine what I'd be doing if I couldn't draw, design and create every day.

Outside

……………………….Thank you Kim Welling…………………

Kim's passion is with illustrations but she is a designer and arts teacher as well. Utrecht, I always call it Amsterdam's little sister, is the city where Kim lives and works.I find her portfolio quite impressive and ad some of her ceramic pieces to my Christmas wishlist. If you like to read more about her then click here for her blog or go directly to her etsy shop called Kim's Little Monsters.

On The Corner by EASTERN Design Office

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

Here’s an extremely pointy apartment block by Japanese architects EASTERN Design Office.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

The four-storey block with a blue facade, named On The Corner, is located in the Shiga Prefecture, Japan, and occupies a triangular slice of land.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

Squares of stone, concrete, glass and glass blocks create a patchwork of materials on the building’s exterior.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

Seven apartments are housed within the block, each with one bedroom and an open-plan living room.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

Pointed terraces are provided in the building’s most acutely angled corner.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

EASTERN Design Office have designed a number of residential buildings, most of which feature unusually shaped windows – see more of the stories here.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

Photography is by Koichi Torimura.

Here’s a longer description from the architects:

On the corner by EASTERN design office

A castle where the boys and girls of the story of Michael Ende could be entering. It is a triangular building configured by the square elements!

The site is a manufacturing area in Youkaichi City in Shiga Prefecture. There are many big factories in this town. A lot of immigrants from South America live here among the local people.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

This is a residential area as well an industrial area. It is also a popular drinking area where many bars and restaurants for such common people are scattered. There is a highway interchange nearby the town. The shape of the lot is a sharp triangle which is unusual for building a house.

The site is a wedge-shaped flatiron lot which remained at a corner where two streets meet at an acute angel. It was left behind neither residential nor for industrial development. No one wanted to buy it, and the public sector would not invest to change it into a park: a lot remained.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

The elevation of this building takes the shape of the triangle plot. It is a triangular residential complex of 13 meters height with the base line 23m x height 12m x oblique line 26m. It is a typical tenanted apartment house with seven rooms, 1-3rd two units on each floor and one on the 4th floor.

Each room is composed of a living room of 13 m2, two bed rooms with 13 m2 and 9m2, a prefabricated bathroom, a kitchen system and a toilet. They are planned to be easy to rent for town people.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

The concrete which serves as a structure is designed carefully. Other than that specific materials are not used here. The exterior wall is made out of square cut stone, concrete and glass formed like scattered cards on it. They are bound by a “cross” so that the spread out material would not disjoin.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

It looks like a present, a toy box or a castle where the boys and girls of the story of Michael Ende could be entering. It is a triangular building configured by the square elements. The cross confines the power of the mixed materials into one.

A shuffle of stones, concretes, and glass. Keen edge of each material is too sharp. A shuffle of mass and void. The design “on the corner” consists of blue and the cross.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

A composition of line and plane surface is created by the clearly distinguished edges of the material.

The confusing imagination is created to make the so far disregarded place interesting, which lies at the corner of messy scenery in an inner city

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

It belongs to no one.
It is nothing.
It does not belong to anything.
It does not belong to any country.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

The edge of the triangular pyramid is like a wrecked boat, a fictional tip of a boat as if it were escaping from town. Where on earth is here?

A corner that makes you feel you are nowhere at the end of the world, where no one can go further anymore. It is far from the center of town, a place which makes you wonder where you are. It is a place to make the town to be nowhere but only here, and it makes you feel like a distinguished person.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

We want to highlight the discarded lot from the urban framework by emphasizing its shape, building architecture similar to illusion. An illusion required by the town people. Reality that is similar to an illusion that one town has something to do with someone.

On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

It seems as if this illusion deceives people to obscure their eyesight and feel invited to another world. It is pretentious, yet it is surrealistic too.

Montre Post-It: Wrist-Based Reminders, Now For Civilians

0wristit01.jpg

NFL quarterbacks and Army Rangers wear “wrist coaches” to keep track of things like “Blue 42 Twist Right” and the full names of people you’re supposed to shoot on sight. But what about us civilians? You could argue that we don’t need such devices; since it’s not 4th down in your office and no one’s shooting at you, you can take the time to dig a smartphone out of your pocket and mash buttons until you get the information you’re seeking.

Still, French designer Doriane Favre has come up with the Montre Post-It, a wristwatch-shaped sticky meant to give you a quick reminder:

0wristit02.jpg

Beats writing on the back of your hand, and if you want a little extra space on the subway, leave one on and write REMEMBER TO TAKE ANTI-PSYCHOTIC MEDS on it in red Sharpie.

537 – What’s the Plural of Texas?

The plural of Texas? My money’s on Texases, even though that sounds almost as wrong as Texae, Texi or whatever alternative you might try to think up. Texas is defiantly singular. It is the Lone Star State, priding itself on its brief independence and distinct culture. Discounting Alaska, it is also …

Twelve Pairs of Ladies’ Rain Boots

Style-driven footwear for rainy days and winter weather

The key to staying warm and dry through the wetter, colder months starts with well-designed footwear. Luckily, the world of wellies has expanded beyond the basic rubber model to encompass a wide range of style-focused boots still durable enough for a solid trek through the elements. Weather the stormy season with one of our favorite styles.

ladies-rain1.jpg

Givenchy

Made in Italy, Givenchy’s solid rubber rain boots are a waterproof take on the classic riding boot. The simple black lace-ups pack enough style for wear even when the sun is shining. The Rider Rainboots sell from Ssense for $295.

Burberry

For a rain boot with some edge, look to Burberry’s Mid Buckle boot. The synthetic uppers closely mock real leather, giving the boots a sophisticated mien without sacrificing function. The rain boots sell from Zappos Couture for $250.

ladies-rain5.jpg

Sorel

The classic duck boot gets freshened up with a bright pop of purple on its rubber base. Face rainy days and cold temperatures with the cheery, effectively transitional lace-up, which features the same durable all-over waterproof construction and Thinsulate insulation. The Women’s Chayanne Lace Boot sells for $115 at Sorel online.

Woman by Common Projects

Another take on the traditional duck boot explores a more sophisticated look without sacrificing the essential elements that make the style a winter standard. Woman by Common Projects has produced a beautiful navy-on-brown lace-up style that looks elegant and tough all at once and, most importantly, manages to keep feet warm and dry in superior style. The boots go for $570 at La Garconne.

ladies-rain4.jpg

Sperry

A leader among boat shoes, Sperry knows a thing or two about waterproofing. Keeping with their nautical approach, the Pelican Tall Boot Lug features classic blue and white stripes on the outside and a micro-fleece lining for added warmth. The Sperry boots sell online for $70.

Ilse Jacobsen Hornbæk

Danish designer Ilse Jacobsen is revered in Scandinavia for making high-quality, hand-assembled boots from natural rubber. She’s brought her activity-driven tall lace-up boots stateside, and each pair features a cotton fleece lining, heat insulating interiors and non-skid rubber soles. The Hornbæk boots sell from Need Supply for $199.

ladies-rain3.jpg

Loeffler Randall

Minimalists will delight in LR’s latest rain boot—the slip-on bootie looks just as sleek as the dress shoe it replaces on a wet commute, with a slip of a wedge heel to keep hemlines safe. The rain slip-ons are available at Loeffler Randall online for $150.

Seavees for Madewell

The California brand collaborated with Madewell on fashion-infused replicas of the boots worn by San Francisco naval yard workers. The mid-height lace-ups come with molded soles and a light fleece lining to keep feet warm and comfortable while traipsing around in the rain. The Off Shore Mid Rain Boots are available online only for $115 a pair.

ladies-rain6.jpg

Joules

Combining soft, mid-weight insulation with a low-rise bootie silhouette, the Wellibob Welly does its duty as a highly functional, wearable shoe-boot. For the days when some splash protection is needed, but you can’t commit your outfit to an all-terrain knee-high, the Wellibob, with a shiny eggplant finish, pulls on nicely. The wellies sell through Joules for £32.95.

Rachel Comey

The designer has amassed a devoted following for her shoes, which she seems to ace whether they’re summer sandals or winter boots. As the elements intensify, Comey’s Baxter Boot offers the brand’s signature understated aesthetic with a solid foundation of a hearty winter-ready insulated lace-up. Priced at just $196—significantly lower than the designer’s typical range around the $500 mark—the boots have sold fast and are already hard to come by. Gargyle is taking pre-orders on larger sizes, as well as names for a waiting list on any returns, while Creatures of Comfort has a few pairs left.

ladies-rain2.jpg

See by Chloe

Glossy navy blue rubber is accented by deep gold laces and a subtle side pocket in these See by Chloe rain boots. Finished with a sturdy rubber sole and a plaid lining, the boots have just the right touch of college prep for walking to class or to the office on rainy autumn days. They sell from Otte for $215.

Tretorn

Created for Tretorn’s 120th anniversary, the Sofiero 120 År PVC-free natural rubber rain boots are a warm solution to cold rainy days with a micro-fleece lining, sock liner and insole. The red laces at top keep water from coming in while adding to the femininity of the sturdy hiking-style boot. Sofiero 120 År sell from Tretorn for $85.

aWall aFrame

Customizable audio artwork hides hi-fi speakers in a conventional picture frame
aFrame-3.jpg

Hiding a high-fidelity speaker system within a traditional wooden picture frame, the aFrame appeals both visually and acoustically. The Brooklyn-based innovator of home audio installation, aWall, custom designs and produces each individual aFrame with a digital amp, Bluetooth reciever, two 6.5″ speakers and two silk tweeters. We recently got a chance to check out this “audio artwork” in person and can vouch for its superior sound quality and craftsmanship.

With dimensions starting at 16″ x 20,” the frames and their internal speakers can be built up to several feet in width, depending on the size of the artwork (customers can customize their own paintings or photographs to fill the frame). The company prefers to work with dense hardwoods like maple, but the aFrame can be outfitted with any type of timber—even reclaimed barn wood.

The customizable options, from the artwork to frame stain and finish, allow the customer to work with a blank canvas of sorts. Besides the subtle aesthetics, the aFrame has Bluetooth capabilities and can network with existing home stereos, making it a practical piece for the living room, the office or any place where a typical stereo system may seem out of place.

aFrame-1.jpg aFrame-4.jpg

A standard aFrame—overall size 18″ x 22″—goes for $695, with an image of your choice (you can print your own or choose from their selection) and a 1″ solid maple frame. Visit aWall online to learn more about this unconventional concept in home audio, designed and produced by hand.
