Rubbish poster

Californian wine merchant Barefoot Wine & Bubbly has backed One Beach, a film documenting ‘creative innovators who support clean and sustainable beaches’. To promote the film, BBDO SF created a poster made from 17,500 pieces of rubbish picked up from beaches in Southern California.

Directed by Jason Baffa, the film apparently “focuses on inspiring people with creativity, optimism and a deeper look at how people are cleaning our beaches and changing the world” (more here).

To promote the film, BBDO’s San Francisco office created this mural in Venice Beach.

The process is documented here

Put This On Visits Fashion Week

With New York’s Fashion Week now all but a distant, glittery memory, hopefully you’ve had time to recover, either having survived being there in person or wearing your fingers to the bone as you scoured the internet for clothes to look at. Fortunately, you can relive it all with this informative and somber piece put together by the always great Put This On, who sent correspondent Dave Hill into the fray to dig out the real stories of the week that was:

Un très beau travail sur la séquence des titles de la conférence Flash On The Beach édition 2011. Un concept de grille de lumière LED comme source de lumière réagissant avec la musique et la chorégraphie de danse moderne. Une production de Black Swan et Gmunk à découvrir en images.

London Design Festival 2011: "Lego Greenhouse" by Sebastian Bergne

LDF_legogh3.jpg

We had to stop by Covent Garden to check out Sebastian Bergne’s installation commissioned by Lego for the festival. Although perhaps a little smaller than we had let ourselves imagine, the spectacle was still certainly grabbing the attention of the hords of tourist ambling through the piazza—undeniably appealing to the child in all of us. The greenhouse seemed to be working surprisingly well—the sunflowers looking healthy despite having, apparently, brown lego bricks for soil. We’ll be sure to stop by at the end of the week to see how they’re getting on.

Architectural Record Calls Out Arch Daily for Plagiarism

An issue has popped up between two sites we visit on a regular, usually daily basis, Architectural Record and Arch Daily. The former, AR, has recently found an article published on Arch Daily that not only borrows liberally from original reporting by Architectural Record’s news editor Jenna McKnight, but at times outright copies and pastes sentences, as well as re-uses photographs taken by McKnight herself, all without permission. AR has called out the site on their blog, in a post entitled “When Blogs Plagiarize.” It’s become something of a standard debate, with the magazine writing that they “work very hard” and “spend a lot of money” putting together original content, only to see it stolen from them, often without even a nod back. Strangely, in this case with Arch Daily, they include attribution for the images and a quick “via” link at the very end; though again, done so without permission. Since AR’s posting, the opposing side has taken down their post, a 404 now existing where the page once was. Thus far, no apologies that we’ve seen, nor an admitting of wrong-doing, but this seems like the sort of thing that might get a little traction, so perhaps its yet to come.

Harmony Link

Logitech’s new iPad-based universal remote offers total media control for home entertainment systems

Logitech‘s new Harmony Link promises to make the home media experience a breeze through its unique combination of hardware device and iPad app system. Designed to enhance how we interact with our entire entertainment center, Harmony Link is like the ultimate universal remote. The hockey puck-sized transmitter connects to the Harmony Link app on an iPad over wifi, giving users the ability to control up to eight devices with their iPad.

By converting iPad commands into infrared signals, the system allows wireless control of any IR-compatible device including TVs, DVD players, stereos and even VCRs. In addition to simulating classic universal remotes, the Harmony Link also gives the user access to a live TV guide with menu options for all the attached devices, which lets you toggle seamlessly between the different media.

The system is also intuitive enough to know what you want when tapping between choices, switching the correct devices off and on and changing inputs with the swipe of a finger. Standard iPad gestures adjust volume, playback and other controls.

The system is now available for $100 from Logitech, and the iPad app is a free download from iTunes. Mobile versions will also be available for the iPod Touch and iPhone from the Apple App store and an Android version from the Android Market are both coming soon.
