If Rocks Could Sing

An alphabet book illustrated entirely with stones found washed up on the shore

Ten years in the making, Leslie McGuirk’s latest children’s book, If Rocks Could Sing is now available. A simple A-is-for-apple approach to learning the alphabet is enhanced by the artist’s imagery of rocks that take form of both the letters and the words they describe.

The project started when McGuirk moved to Florida and began taking long walks on the beach looking for shells. “All I found were rocks,” the artist recalled in a recent chat. “But then I found one that looked like a letter and the idea for the book came to me instantly.” From there she began collecting letters and shapes. She recently found a K-shaped rock—the last holdout—and the project was complete.

If Rocks Could Sing is available at Amazon.

Dwell on Design 2011: Scout Regalia Helps Us Grow!

Echo Park couple Benjamin Luddy and Makoto Mizutani are the duo behind Scout Regalia, a name that was intentionally dreamed up to evoke visions of loyalty, integrity and warmth. “It evokes our aesthetic and what we’re interested in:” Mizutani explains, “Looking at ways that we can create something that’s both clean and functional, not ornamental.” Adds Luddy, “The name rings a bell with a humble version of modernism.”

True to their inspiration, Scout Regalia’s creations have a certain integrity about them. The design studio works a lot with locally-sourced wood. At this year’s Dwell on Design Remodelista Market, the couple showcased their Garden Kit made of FSC-certified redwood with baked enamel heavy gauge steel brackets that add a nice pop of color to the planter. Over time, the wood will acquire a gray patina, contrasting well with the colorful metal bracket.

Artisanal caramels from California with distinct salt flavors

CC-Made-CA1.jpg CC-Made-CA3.jpg

Wanting to share her distinctly flavored caramel products with a broader audience, CC Made founder Cassandra Chen teamed up with her cousin, Emily Hou, to create their line of artisanal caramels. Once reserved for lucky family members, the California-based product is now sold in gourmet food stores all over the state. Offered in three variations—Bitter Sea Salt, Madagascar Vanilla and Himalayan Pink Salt—the caramel confections are each flavored by a different salt added to a base blend of cream, sugar, butter and corn syrup.

The creamy consistency of caramels delivers rich, mouth-watering flavor. Infused with the right amount of salt, these soft caramels do not overwhelm the palate with sweetness. The muted sugary tones melt away as quickly as the candy in your mouth does. The lightly bitter finish was satisfying to some, but those with a serious sweet tooth hoped for a little more body. Bitter Sea Salt emerged as our favorite, especially after we cooled the treats in the fridge (this trick helped the unique salt flavors come through and firmed up their consistency).

While Cassandra’s focus is on the recipe, Emily is responsible for the confection’s bold packaging. As pleasing to the eyes as the caramel is to the tongue, each box is backed by a bright graphic that varies in colorways according to flavor. Resembling abstracted tree branches, the graphic card inserts can be removed from the box and reused.

CC Made can be found at these CA retailers or ordered online. A box of around 12 caramels sells for $6.50. If you’re craving caramel in other forms, check out their caramel corn and keep a look out for their line of caramel sauces available in select stores.

Celebrating the Summer Solstice in Poland, a More Communal Version of Fireworks

0poznanlanterns.jpg

One week from today Americans will celebrate the country’s anniversary with fireworks shows, and Core77’s hometown of New York will have a huge one, as usual. But we’ve just seen something more participatory than fireworks, less fleeting, and arguably more beautiful: Citizens of Poznan in Poland celebrated the first official day of summer by releasing over 11,000 paper lanterns into the twilight sky, where they were carried away by the wind.

Dwell on Design 2011: A Winning Show from Molo

110624 dod day 1_0012.JPGImages and reporting by Carren Jao

Perennial favorites, Molo’s traveling cocoon-like exhibition display has been one of the most notable on this year’s design circuit. It was nice to see the Vancouver-based studio’s immersive softwall displayed at this year’s Dwell on Design.

Molo’s prime spot on the show floor allowed for a 360-degree viewing—visitors could see floating “Cloud” lamps suspended from above almost like jellyfish and stacks of brown kraft paper that surround the booth like a little oasis.

Their softwall + softblock modular system, a flexible wall that can be expanded and contracted depending on the needs of the space, is also held at the MoMA permanent collection.

Building a City in Reverse: The Making of Ikea Brooklyn’s Promo Vid

0rlyonsikea.jpg

NYC-based Humble Films shot this killer promo for Ikea three years ago when they opened their Brooklyn outpost. Three days ago shooter Robert Lyons posted a vid showing how it was done, and the hits have been through the roof.

The simple but central clever trick was that they shot time-lapse footage of lower Manhattan being disassembled—always easier than putting something together—then ran it backwards to give the illusion of super-smooth construction. Lyons worked together with FX Director Peter Wallach on the spot, and I think the making-of video above actually looks better than the finished commercial, after the jump.
