Beautiful Manufacturing Vid of Marc Newson’s Ikepod Hourglass

0ikepod2.jpg

If you thought Marc Newson’s Hourglass design for Ikepod was stunning, wait ’til you see the video of how they manufacture it. This may be my favorite making-of video of all. At the Glaskeller factory in Switzerland, workers manipulate borosilicate glass to Newson’s precise specifications using a combination of old and new techniques; as an example of the latter, the sand has been replaced by nanoballs.

Salone Milan 2011: Playing with Electricity at Droog’s Design for Download

playwithelectricity.jpg

Speaking of Droog, counterintuitively, the most exciting thing at the Droog Design for Download show in Milan were a few electrical outlets by EventArchitectuur, tiny in comparison to reconfigurable flat pack furniture systems also on show. For us, though, they exhibited the most potential, moving away from modularly assembled cut out shapes (however striking) into a more sculptural expression of customizable, on-demand technology, addressing a very simple concept: “With 3D printing, even the most mundane mass-manufactured objects become a matter of choice.”

Little Thor

Friday Photo: Window on the Wedding

Fasten your fascinators, design fans, because the royal wedding is but a week away. Bidding is still open for those mod takes on commemorative plates we told you about earlier this month, and today we bring you a window into the highly anticipated nuptials from Liberty, the 136-year-old London department store. This week saw the debut of “A Right Royal Affair,” a window of Liberty’s iconic Tudor building that features such wedding finery as a Mini filled with gifts (homegoods, rose-scented toiletries, a couple of rather creepy ceramic cats), flags, stuffed Corgis, and a three-tiered, Liberty-print cake topped with a figure of the Queen, who clutches her handbag and offers a signature wave. The car is adorned with cheeky bumper stickers, including “Granny Knows Best,” “My Other Car is a Horse and Carriage,” and “Have a Nice Day…Off.” Meanwhile, inside the store, there are plenty of souvenirs on offer. We like London-based designer Simeon Farrar‘s “God Save The King and His Queen” tote bag, a riff on Jaime Reid‘s famous Sex Pistols album cover. At £85 ($140) price, think of it as an Earth Day present to yourself.

A Place In The Sun: Picturing California

California dreaming in a group show featuring Los Angeles photographers
picturesun-1.jpg

The American Dream is familiar enough territory, but what of the allure of the West? The group show “A Place in the Sun: Picturing California” highlights Los Angeles photographers, some native and others transplants, who explore the Caliifornia dream.

picturesun2.jpg picturesun3.jpg

Images cast a collective portrait of the Golden State as a place where promises are alternately fulfilled, deferred and denied—a vision that’s not too far off from the reality of the U.S. What defines the work of these talents (among them Sam Comen, Emily Shur, Alex Tehrani, Katrina Dickson, J. Wesley Brown and Chad Ress) ;is a shared distinct sensibility. Their approach lies in the beauty and awkwardness of trying to feel at home in a vast region founded on prosperity— not to mention the photographers’ commercial gigs.

picturesun4.jpg

“Here in L.A., at the locus of the entertainment industry, crisp lighting and saturated colors elevate celebrities to icons,” Comen explains. “It’s in this context that I apply those same photographic motifs to everyday people in the environments that define them, holding them up, casting them as lead characters.”

picturesun5.jpg

Comen shares a fascination many artists feel about their personal stomping grounds. “Though I love making work afar in the field, I’m endlessly interested in my hometown of L.A., and feel like this city holds a lifetime of stories for me to tell through pictures.”

The show opens today and runs through 6 May 2011 at Hi-Lite Studio and Project Space.

Sustainability in 7: Adam Werbach Explains Cultural Sustainability

adamwerbach.jpg

90-x-90.jpg The Designers Accord Sustainability in 7 video series delivers a daily dose of design inspiration by today’s leading sustainability experts. Join in the conversation as they share 7 things every designer should consider when integrating sustainability into design practice.

HAPPY EARTH DAY! While the principles of sustainability apply to every discipline, the term is often reduced to shorthand for an eco-conscious, environmentally-sound lifestyle. If the current discourse typically focuses on social, economic or environmental sustainability, Werbach makes a case for the underrepresented fourth domain: culture.

About Adam Werbach

Adam Werbach is the Chief Sustainability Officer of Saatchi & Saatchi. He is the author of Strategy for Sustainability: A Business Manifesto, published by Harvard Business Press, and named one of the top business books of the year by Fast Company Magazine. He sometimes wears different-colored socks. He can be found on twitter @adamwerbach.

The Designers Accord is a global coalition of designers, educators, and business leaders working together to create positive environmental and social impact. Adopters of the Designers Accord commit to five guidelines that provide collective and individual ways to integrate sustainability into design. The Designers Accord provides a participatory platform with online and offline manifestations so that members have access to a community of peers who share methodologies, resources, and experiences around environmental and social issues in design.

nycreativeinternsbanner.jpg

NY Creative Interns is an organization dedicated to precisely what its name indicates, helping “college students and recent grads to find internships, mentors, and inspiration through networking and meetups.”

sellingyrself.jpg

Tuesday, April 26th, will see their fifth meetup, “Sell Yourself without Selling Out: Making It as an Artist in the Digital Age,” at Etsy’s headquarters in Dumbo.

In a world where digital rules, how can you take your creative project and do something with it? If you call yourself an artist (and we’re all artists in our own right) – what are the best ways to make the digital landscape your friend? Join NY Creative Interns and Etsy to hear a panel of artists share insight and discuss how even the most traditional art forms can have a place in the digital age.

Panelists:
Ruben Quinones // Director of New Media, Pathinteractive, NYU Adjunct Professor
Jacob Krupnick // Girl Walk All Day, Shootbooth
Parris Whittingham // New York Wedding Photographer
Katherine Barna // Communications Director, Tumblr

With the end of the term just a month away, fledgling creatives—art students or otherwise—certainly have something to gain from the panel, not least for the invaluable opportunity to network with peers and potential employers.

Gestalten Space Opens, Bookstore and Gallery in Berlin

gestaltenspace.png

Berlin-ers rejoice! One of our favorite design and architecture publishers has setup shop in Berlin-Mitte. The Gestalten Space, a 350 square-meter gallery and shop sounds like it’ll be a destination venue for local art lovers and tourists alike. The shop will feature Gestalten’s phenomenal range of book titles—new and archived (including the recently Core-reviewed title Staging Space)— as well as toys and products by the designers and artists whose work they’ve published, bringing the pages of their design books to life.

Cutters Edges, the opening exhibition at the Gestalten Space, is a true celebration of “a new heyday” in contemporary collage. The show brings together over 50 international artists showcasing more than 160 works including pieces from Paul Burgess, Katherine Streeter, Sergej Sviatchenko, April Gertler, Hisham Akira Bharoocha and Stephen BRandes. Cutters Edges is assembled by American artist and curator James Gallagher.
