Home Traveller by Anne Lorenz
Posted in: Anne Lorenz, Cologne 2011Cologne 2011: young designer Anne Lorenz presented this storage chest modelled on an enormous handbag as part of [D3] Design Talents at imm cologne last week.
Called Home Traveller, the leather bag on legs is designed to be moved around without occupying a fixed place on the home.
imm cologne took place 18-23 January. See all our coverage of the event here »
Here’s a little bit of text from Lorenz:
Home Traveller was part of my graduation project at HFG Karlsruhe/Germany. It is a combination of a handbag and furniture – a play with those archetypes. The portable storage unit can easily be carried from one place to another and be arranged in the living space like an accessory. Instead of a normal furniture it has no fixed place in the room. It is as spacious like a chest but more flexible in the use.
Materials: Leather, wood.

MoMA Acquires Twenty-Three Digital Typefaces, Preps for Exhibition in March
Posted in: UncategorizedFollowing their high-profile acquisition of artist David Wojnarowicz‘s controversial A Fire in My Belly, the MoMA has just added some more to its collection, with these pieces a bit easier to interpret (or at least, easier to read). This week, the museum announced that it has acquired twenty-three digital typefaces for its Architecture and Design Collection, ranging from Erik Spiekermann‘s FF Meta to Neville Brody‘s FF Blur (and before you wonder, yes, of course Hoefler & Frere-Jones‘ Gotham is in there too). Previously, as Alice Rawsthorn points out, Helvetica had been the only piece of type the museum had picked up for the department, lonely among a collection of nearly 30,000 objects, so it’s nice to see they’ve see the typographic light. Here’s a bit from the official statement, as well as some quick info on what they have planned for the new acquisitions:
This first selection of 23 typefaces represent a new branch in our collection tree. They are all digital or designed with a foresight of the scope of the digital revolution, and they all significantly respond to the technological advancements occurring in the second half of the twentieth century. Each is a milestone in the history of typography. These newly acquired typefaces will all be on display in Standard Deviations, an installation of the contemporary design galleries opening March 2 on the third floor.

Posted in: UncategorizedCoco Cardenas presents her Jewelry design methods and pieces.
Coco designs and handcrafts all of her pieces. A mold for is produced for each of her designs. The molds and castings are made from silicone rubbers and urethane plastics, giving her flexible, careful control of each piece. Original designs are made from wood and wax carvings, or by the manipulation of previously assembled pieces. The earrings are hung from sterling silver or gold-plated posts. Select designs are adorned with plastic or brass chains. Finally, each piece is given a title referencing its inspiration.
Recently Coco has collaborated with Patty Wilson on custom pieces for photo shoots and with Ryan Watkins-Hughes for Heist Gallery in NY. On her own she has been doing specialty pieces for Screaming Mimi’s in New York City and Mini Market in Brooklyn. She created both jewelry and hand bag pieces for Adam Arnold’s fall runway show as well as many of the shows at New York Fashion Week.
Coco’s presentation will showcase her work and demonstrations of her creative process including details about materials, techniques and safety advice. She will also highlight resources for materials and information.

Médiathèque d’Anzin by Dominique Coulon & Associés
Posted in: Cultural buildings, Dominique Coulon & AssociésThis multimedia library in Anzin, France, by Strasbourg architects Dominique Coulon & Associés is wrapped in overlapping slices of concrete.
Reading rooms at the Médiathèque d’Anzin are revealed to the town outside through exposed areas of glazing, while the triangular geometry continues inside.
Here’s a little text from the architects:
The building reveals its preciousness at first sight.
Its pure, sophisticated geometry situates it as a public building.
The deliberate areas of transparency reveal its content.
The reading rooms present the building to the town in the manner of an invitation.
The multimedia library is covered with large white veils that reflect the light.
The building asserts it lightness, like an origami.
The successive folds and flaps repeat this image.
It is white, almost immaterial, like the mere projection of a concept, yet it is brimming with the life that constitutes it beyond its physical limits.
On the inside, there is abundant, uniform light.
The space is open and fluid, offering optimal flexibility.
The lighting effect produced by the tall gaps that appear to float in space is truly beautiful.
The volumes are independent and geometrically free, giving the whole a wonderfully poetic feel.
