Weird and kind of cool: Nooka’s packaging that you eat out of

In a bid to ensure their packaging is not thrown away, watch manufacturer Nooka has partnered with design brand SiliconeZone to produce a rather unusual product: Packaging that you save and use to eat out of. Nooka’s new gem box is microwave-safe and harkening back to the days when the impoverished would save jam jars to use as drinking glasses, though the cooking-grade silicone used here is decidedly more hi-tech.

Nooka’s even going to start putting recipes up on their website. Sure it sounds a little weird at first, but you can’t say the thinking isn’t out of the box….

Revolving Door: Design Council Loses Deputy Chief Executive

1113designcouncil.jpg

Late last week, the news came out that the British government’s review of the country’s Design Council, the organization created to generate interest and support of design in the UK,
“>forced them to move from public funding to independent non-profit
(albeit still with some government grant support). Word of this came with the obvious news that this would likely mean trimming back and staff layoffs. Now the first major exodus from the Design Council, its Deputy Chief Executive, David Godber, a former Nissan Design employee and who had “a high-profile career in the automotive sector and energy sectors” before coming to the organization. Dexigner reports that Godber has decided to step down from his role this December, but “will continue to work with the Design Council in an advisory capacity.”

Unitasker Wednesday: Asparagus Peeler

My friends Craig and Brittany have rascally senses of humor, which I greatly enjoy. This past weekend, they surprised me with a very special gift — a unitasker they found lurking unused at the back of their kitchen utensil drawer:

The Orka Asparagus Peeler is for all those times you peel your asparagus, which, at least for the three of us, is never. I’ve never peeled my asparagus. Craig and Brittany have never peeled their asparagus. In fact, after looking through a handful of cookbooks, we couldn’t find any recipes that required asparagus stalks to be peeled. The three of us never even knew asparagus has skin that could need peeling.

Surprisingly, there are numerous styles of asparagus peelers available to meet a person’s asparagus peeling needs (we found five, there are likely more). We’re not really sure why, though, a standards vegetable peeler couldn’t peel your asparagus if you actually wanted to peel your asparagus?

Who are the asparagus peelers of the world? Why are they peeling asparagus? And why are they purchasing special peelers to take on this (seemingly) unnecessary task? And how in the world did my friends Craig and Brittany come to possess this odd unitasker in the first place?

The world may never know …

Airwaves 2010

From crowd surfing to the surreal, our photos from Iceland’s biggest music festival
airwaves-artsmuseum1.jpg

Since the proliferation of music festivals means you have your pick of locations, choosing wisely can make the difference between a good and an epic time. To make sure the steep ticket prices and airfare is worth it, an appealing setting along with an exceptional line-up and the unparalleled parties that follow pretty much guarantees fun. One that continuously stays a cut above the rest is Airwaves, Iceland’s premiere music celebration that we decided to check out again after witnessing the insanity of the four-day event last year.

For 2010’s edition, we asked London-based photographer Craig Thomas to capture some of the Reykjavik flavor that makes this festival so remarkable. The upshot takes a look at the local youth culture, the liberally-minded city itself and of course, the music and venues that are the foundation of the whole scene.
