Nissan pioneering new automotive interior features: Easy chairs, air purifiers, vitamin-mist-spraying air conditioners

pWe didn’t think it could be done, but technology has advanced to the point where the Magic Tree air freshener may actually be supplanted by something more sophisticated. /p
p”We want drivers to feel that they are healthier staying in the car instead of on the outside,” a Nissan engineer announced at a press event in Tokyo yesterday. To that end they’re looking into incorporating in-dash air purifiers designed by Sharp, air conditioners that spray a Vitamin C mist to moisturize skin, and special heated chairs–designed using NASA research–that promote better circulation./p
pThere’s no word on when these features (and A HREF=”http://www.physorg.com/news199513947.html” a few additional ones/A) will make their way into actual production models, but maybe we’ll get lucky and see them in Nissan’s new electric Leaf car, which launches later this year. In the meantime you’d better stock up on Magic Trees before they start disappearing like the rainforest./p

pThe Savannah College of Art Design’s ID department continues to impress us with its significant ties to real-world industry and the educational opportunities this affords to its students. SCAD’s latest team-up was with heavy equipment manufacturer JCB, who collaborated with SCAD ID students on a re-design of their 3CX backhoe loader, show above./p
blockquoteThe new 3CX features aesthetic changes to its loader arms, cab roof cap and engine hood that make it look more “rugged.”
p”We gave it more of an Americas look,” said Chris Giorgianni, JCB’s general manager for product marketing. “From a look and feel aspect, it’s always been about the guts of the machine. Now it looks on the outside the way it performs.”/p
pThe relationship [between JCB and SCAD] goes back three years and started with redesigns of accessories, like in-cab cupholders, assembly line workstations and skid steer loader attachments./p
pThe 3CX was the first product redesign on which the company and the college collaborated. And it will be the first of many, Giorgianni said, given the results./p
p”The construction community is pretty tight-knit, and you end up with tunnel vision,” he said. “The students challenge everything. They have virgin eyes. Every meeting we have, they mention some simple improvement that is an aha moment for us. We come away saying, ‘Why didn’t we think of that.’ “/blockquote/p

pThat’s a prototype for an electric bicycle designed by Sir Misha Black, the influential UK industrial designer behind a 1946 exhibition called “Britain Can Make It.” /p
blockquoteShortly after the end of the Second World War, Sir Misha designed the ‘Britain can make it’ exhibition, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The exhibition was intended to boost morale by promoting the British manufacturing industry that was decimated after the war. Industry was to play a vital part in British post-war reconstruction. Sir Misha included a section called the ‘benefits of good design’, where he promoted good design as a force for social change./blockquote
pBlack was made the first president of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design in 1959, and was knighted for his contributions to industry and business in the UK. He is now A HREF=”http://www.icsid.org/news/year/2010_news/articles1144.htm” being honored by ICSID/A on the occasion of what would have been his 100th birthday. br /

Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate by Rafael Viñoly Architects
Posted in: UncategorizedRafael Viñoly Architects have unveiled their design for the new Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Boston.
It will house classrooms, exhibition space and a representation of the Senate Chamber.
Here’s some more information from Viñoly’s office:
Rafael Viñoly Architects to design Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate
Rafael Viñoly Architects is proud to have been selected as the architect for the new Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. Situated on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Boston, this historic project will stand beside the existing John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, encouraging visitors to explore both buildings. The new facility will house participatory educational programs designed to engage the public in our system of government and heighten awareness of the U.S. Senate’s role in the government. The project will break ground in Fall 2010. The design is targeting LEED Certification.
Rafael Viñoly said, “We are honored to develop this important educational project that will greatly enhance public understanding of the role of the U.S. Senate. We are proud to be working with the Institute and the University of Massachusetts to make Senator Kennedy’s exciting vision a reality.”
The facility will consist of roughly 40,000 square feet of program space, comprised mainly of classrooms, educational exhibits, and a representation of the Senate Chamber. The Institute’s ground level is made with white precast concrete with punched window openings and as with the overall site plan has been designed to work in harmony with I.M. Pei’s neighboring John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. The design includes a seamless cladding which houses the Chamber and is 2 stories in height. The cladding is visually separated from the 1-story volume by a ribbon skylight which will expand at the lobby, greeting visitors with a naturally illuminated reception area.
The completed development will boast a large expanse of outdoor public space at the heart of which is an expanse of grass bringing visitors to the entrance of the building. This lawn is bordered by two triangular volumes which define the entry to the building and geometrically connect the Institute to the JFK Library. The exterior open space is a link between the Institute, the JFK Library and the University of Massachusetts Boston campus, while also acting as a connection to the waterfront and HarborWalk. The entrance approach is designed to incorporate components from each of the 50 states and enhance connections between the building and the entire nation.
