Stella McCartney to Design Uniforms for British Olympic Teams for 2012

Staying in London a few minutes longer, but moving on to something less contentious (unless you happen to be a rival fashion designer). It’s been announced that Stella McCartney has been selected to design the clothing worn by the British athletes in the 2012 London Olympics. Because the Olympics are nothing if not official, technically she’ll be working as a Creative Director for adidas, which is the “Official Sportswear Partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” which is designated by the British Olympic Association (whew). McCartney, who already has a contract with adidas for her “women’s sports-inspired performance range” aptly titled adidas by Stella McCartney, will work on both the athletes’ outfits as well as creating a similar consumer line for the public, Team GB, that is set to launch this fall. Here’s a bit:

On her new role as Creative Director, Stella commented: “As a British fashion designer it is an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity to be creative director of Team GB as the hosting nation of the London 2012 Olympic Games.”

Victoria Pendleton, British Olympic & World Champion track cyclist commented: “I’m a massive fan of Stella McCartney and with London hosting the Olympic Games it is really important as the host nation to set the standards. To have a British designer, inputting into the British kit is going to be very special.”
