Murder Mystery

Great cover shot!

They’re a synth-pop band from New York. If you’re looking for some up-beat jams, definitely give them a listen (‘Change My Mind’ will easily get stuck in your head). You can check out their music here (free downloads for both “I Am (If You Are)” and “Change My Mind”). Enjoy!

Thanks again for the pics Jeremy

Mogollon’s club class

After the hassles of dealing with clients, self-initiated projects give design studios some much needed creative release – as with Brooklyn-based Mogollon’s series of posters for its own club nights

As Mogollon’s founder Francisco Lopez explains, no doubt echoing the thoughts of many designer/DJs out there, “We love music and it’s one way to produce nice pieces of work while having fun”. Lopez has been playing music in New York bars and clubs for years so it was a small step to run parties under the studio name. Which of course provided a great excuse to make some posters. Here’s a selection

You can listen to the music played on each of the nights promoted by the posters in the Radio section of Mogollon’s website here

Are you ready?

In the Montesorri method of education, teachers will often ask students, “Are you ready?” The program in a Montessori school is primarily self-directed, and teachers use this question to help children to focus and prepare for learning.

I think of this question quite a bit during the course of my day. As I’m getting ready to work, I ask myself if I’m ready for the many things I need to accomplish. When I’m taking my son to the park, I check in to make sure I’m ready to focus on having fun and not still thinking about work obligations. Before I drive anywhere, I ask myself if I’m ready to pay attention to the road.

“Are you ready?” is also a great question to ask yourself before taking on any uncluttering project. Are you ready to clear the clutter so you can have more time, space, and energy to focus on what really matters to you? Are you ready to let go of things that prevent you from having a remarkable life? Are you ready to change?

Don’t be surprised if some days your answer is “no.” We all have bad days and heavy loads that can make uncluttering difficult — so don’t unclutter during these times. Uncluttering isn’t a race or a competition, and doing it when you’re not ready can lead to regrets. Wait for a time when your answer is a resounding “yes!”

What is your answer? Are you ready?

Bag Of The Week: Oak Black Leather Fringe Hobo

imageSummer just isn’t summer without over-sized sunglasses and a hobo bag. The fringed hobo has been the “it bag” for some time now, and this black leather one from Oak is lust-worthy as ever. The asymmetrical overlapping of different textures and tones of black leather and suede is the perfect fusion of grunge and glam with its rugged and sleek combination. This version, however, is the ultimate anywhere bag — with its “business in front” clasp and “party in the back” fringe, the swooping layer of dangling leather strings softens the chic formality of the classic “black leather bag” look. The tapered bottom look gives the bag a compact enough feel to sling it on with a sexy summer dress for a night out, and the fun fringe screams short-shorts and off-the-shoulder tunic for looking day-date dapper. The rough style of this bag makes no demure statement, so it’s nothing if it isn’t flashy. For a bold way to wear black leather, check out the Oak Black Leather Fringe Hobo — the Hive’s newest Bag Of The Week!

Price: $590.00

Scratch My Back: Collectors’ Edition

Daniel Mason got in touch with CR recently to tell us about a new collectors’ edition of Peter Gabriel‘s Scratch My Back album. At $299, the pack won’t appeal to everyone – but I always find these collectors editions interesting – for a variety of reasons. Here are images and a run through of what is included in the lavish release:

Mason acted as consultant to designer Marc Bessant who designed the pack which comes in a full colour and gloss laminated lift off lid box:

– which contains a 4GB USB key containing 96khz/24 bit studio quality audio of the album

which comes housed in a high density laser engraved foam tray:

Blood red, 180gsm heavyweight 12 inch vinyl pressing of the album featuring new sleeve artwork unique to the edition:

The special edition double CD pack of the album, housed in a case-bound, full colour and gloss laminated 10 inch cover – which is itself housed in a high density foam tray:

A 12×12 inch print of the original album cover artwork, printed on 352gsm Mohawk Superfine Ultrawhite Smooth stock, signed and numbered in pencil by Peter Gabriel:

And you also get a a foilblocked and numbered certificate of authenticity! Only 500 of these editions have been made.

River Pictures

Photographs capturing the lazy, hazy flows of rivers, summer and youth
RiverPictures_1.jpg

Opening at L.A.’s Hi-Lite studio space, “River Pictures” represents the culmination of photographer Ruben Cox’s summers spent cruising the waters of his Highlands, North Carolina hometown.

RiverPictures_2.jpg

What started as casually documenting people while they enjoyed the river elements, grew over the course of three seasons during the late ’90s into an intimate glimpse of the slow Southern summer for an intriguing photo essay.

RiverPictures_3.jpg

Curator Audrey Landreth notes, “Cox’s images capture real moments that speak to a greater experience: an American experience of fleeting summer and youth, the thrill of cool water on warm rocks; of goose bumps and distant laughter, of not wanting the sun to go down.”

RiverPictures_6.jpg

Landreth continues, “They evoke a certain nostalgia for a simpler time and a lyrical, satisfying affinity towards the observance of ordinary people.”

RiverPictures_4.jpg

This is the first time the extended series of work has been shown, although individual images have been previously published in the New York Times Magazine and the New Yorker.

“River Views” will be on view by appointment starting 17 July 2010 and running through 14 August 2010.
