Washington Post Crowns Americas Next Great Cartoonist

A comic by Olivia Walch, winner of the The Washington Post‘s “America’s Next Great Cartoonist” Contest
Just in time for Comic-Con, The Washington Post has announced the winner of its “America’s Next Great Cartoonist” contest, and it’s 21-year-old Olivia Walch, a rising senior at William & Mary (where she’s the cartoonist for the student newspaper). Walch’s single-panel comic, “Imogen Quest,” received the most votes in two rounds of reader voting and impressed a panel of celebrity judges including the Marvel-ous Stan Lee, Garry Trudeau of Doonesbury fame, and “Pearls Before Swine” creator Stephan Pastis. Her prize? A one-month stint in The Washington Post Style section and $1,000. Walch bested the approximately 500 other contest entrants by going meta, creating what the Post describes as “whimsically rendered people [that] seem to be deconstructing the accepted notions of a comic strip even as they are populating one.” Meanwhile, the contest was more than a scouting expedition. The Post also intended the American Idol-flavored initiative as “an affirmation of the popularity of the newspaper’s print and online comics,” which are heartening words at a time when newspapers nationwide are cutting editorial cartoons and comics. Chuckle over the work of all ten “America’s Next Great Cartoonist” finalists here.

DeLonghi Gran Dama
Posted in: Uncategorized A home espresso maker taking you from beans to foam in minutes
A shameless addiction to morning coffee has only fed my concern for a quality fix. So when DeLonghi sent over their Gran Dama Super Automatic Coffee Maker, I was excited to give it a go. Now, months later, I’m as hooked on the machine as I am on the caffeine.
The Gran Dama—with the touch of a button—creates espressos, lattes, cappuccinos and macchiatos, each with programmable amounts of coffee and milk, as well as adjustable cup sizes. For tea, hot chocolate, oatmeal or other drinks and snacks of the just-add-water variety, the machine also features a hot water spout.
Despite the focus on making drinks to your exact specifications, customizing doesn’t usurp the machine’s ability to whip up a drink quickly. Using a double boiler system, milk and coffee heat at the same time, making for a flawless transition between espresso and cappuccino.
Another convenient feature for coffee-heads who insist on freshly ground beans, the Gran Dama’s patented “direct-to-brew” system integrates a grinder for the ultimate full-bodied espresso.
Durably and handsomely constructed of stainless steel, the Gran Dama’s small footprint squeezes into tight spaces on nearly any home or office kitchen countertop. The low-maintainence machine even features an automatic decalcification indicator light which turns on when it’s time for cleaning, as well as a red light in the drip tray indicating when it’s full.
Like having a personal barista with eight hands in your home, the machine justifies its $2,500 price tag by satisfying some of the most picky coffee fans out there with its array of features. It sells direct from DeLonghi’s online store.

Posted in: UncategorizedSomething about a quilted bag, as simple as it is, just automatically reads as totally luxe. Maybe it’s the obvious association with the widely-coveted classic Chanel bag, or maybe it’s just the prep-school chic vibe, or perhaps it’s simply the textured look that just appears expensive, no matter the brand or what you paid for it. No matter what the reason, it’s hard to deny that quilting manages to add that extra dose of iconic elegance! If you’re looking for that simple but chic Chanel look without the extravagant price tag, go for a boxy shape with a foldover flap like this Marc Jacobs’ version or a more low-maintenance fabric version from Charlotte Russe, but if you’d rather stray from the lookalikes, I love how this DKNY mini updates the style with chain trim, while this Rachel Roy bag edges things up with contrasting studs. Take a look at the slideshow for the full selection of my favorite quilted bags! |

L.A. Flea Market
Posted in: Uncategorized Gourmet food trucks, vintage modern furniture and more at Dodger Stadium’s new outdoor shopping bazaar
Last Sunday, rather than the usual ballgame crowds, a different kind of fanatic filled L.A.’s Dodger Stadium parking lot. Shopaholics of all stripes came out to see the goods at the city’s new monthly antiques, arts, food, and new-merchandise event, the L.A. Flea Market.
Just as eclectic as the cast of visitors hailing from throughout the L.A. area, the finds ranged from vintage Dior sunglasses to homemade face scrub. Among the 460 booths, I spied items from nearly every decade—shiny, industrial Emerson Jr. fans from the ’20s and ’30s, ’70s costume jewelry, ’50s filing cabinets. An entire aisle of Salvation Army outlets from the city’s suburbs got their own area in a showcase that’s planned to be an annual event.
When asked what attracted them to this particular market over landmark bazaars like the Rose Bowl and the Melrose Trading Post, vendors said the central location brought out more people. Christian Garcia, who sold a slew of orange and yellow Pyrex casserole dishes from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s earlier that day, pointed out that to his surprise many of the patrons were younger, lending a fresh vibe.
Envisioning the market as “Fred Segal meets Coachella” according to the L.A. Times, organizer Phillip Dane means it quite literally. Within distance of a shark-shaped kid’s bounce house, a stage hosted a line-up of local bands and it will be a permanent feature of the L.A. Flea Market. Like NYC’s Brooklyn Flea and Hester Street Fair, the goal is to provide multiple experiences in one go, with places to grab a bite to eat being one of the biggest draws.
Thanks to L.A.’s booming food truck scene, 20 gourmet trucks replaced traditional tents. Parked in a half-circle to one side of the booths, the set-up created an impromptu food court—naturally as popular as the merchandise booths if not more.
Admission to the L.A. Flea Market starts at $5 for general and $25 for VIP, which includes valet parking and help carrying purchases to the car. The next one will take place on 29 August 2010, check the site for more info.

Designs that Never Were: Robrady’s killer Phantom Gaming Console

pOne of the sad parts of toiling away in an industrial design studio is that you’ll inevitably spend hours, weeks, maybe months slaving over a project that will never see the light of day. Marketers change their minds, lawyers wag their fingers, clients go out of business. The best you can hope for is that your project at least lives on the web in a portfolio page where some design blogger may stumble across it./p
pThat’s what happened today as I luckily happened across Robrady Design’s wicked-looking A HREF=”http://robrady.com/infl.html” Phantom Gaming Console/A, an ill-fated machine that was slated for release around 2004/2005. The revolutionary machine A HREF=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom_%28game_system%29″ was supposed to/A play downloadable and PC games, but it failed to materialize due to various business problems, and then something called the Xbox came along./p
pSo, just wanna say: Dear Robrady designer/modelmaking guy in the pictures below, we feel your pain./p
