Jimmy Carter Library Museum to Receive Major Overhaul

0209carterlibrary.jpg

While those who find it interesting are eagerly waiting to see how the George W. Bush Presidential Library turns out in a few years, with Robert A.M. Stern doing the architecting and Michael Van Valekenburgh taking care of beautifying the out of doors, those who weren’t the biggest fans of the former President or are die-hard Democrats who dislike anything to do with the man (or both), fortunately Jimmy Carter has come around to provide you with your own library to track. Carter has announced that it’s time for a major facelift on the Jimmy Carter Library Museum, which was built in 1986 in Atlanta. The former President will unveil the new plans for the building next week, on February 19th, which are to show how dramatically the library/museum will change. Here’s a peek:

Except for the existing replica of the Oval Office, the museum will be dramatically transformed. It will bring presidential history to life from 1924 — when Carter was born — until today. The museum, for the first time, will give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the work undertaken by the former president and his wife since they left the White House to advance peace, health and hope worldwide through their nonprofit organization, the Carter Center.

Through the Looking Glass

by Ariston Anderson

To create their custom-designed window display, the brains behind Manifold Architecture Studio laser-cut a series of hexagon-based modules in New York, and shipped them flat to Basel Switzerland for an installation in the 5M3 storefront gallery last week.

The project derives from two themes, one an exploration of subdivided patterns, taken from onsite leaf densities. The second concept involves the viewer, as the three-dimensional modules can be changed to allow multiple openings, allowing the spectator to change their perception of the storefront as they see fit.

Identity change for Newsweek

A new look for Newsweek is in the works…

Newsweek is about to begin a major change in its identity, with a new design, a much smaller and, it hopes, more affluent readership, and some shifts in content. The venerable newsweekly’s ingrained role of obligatory coverage of the week’s big events will be abandoned once and for all, executives say.

Pretty Curls Make Fashionable Girls On “The City”

Every Monday I tune in to MTV’s “The City” and watch Whitney Port navigate her way through Manhattan’s social scene and her constant battle of upper east versus lower east. While her co-worker Olivia Palermo may not approve of her downtown lifestyle, the one thing they can agree on is hair! Both girls have sported long, flowing curls that evoke a sense of vintage glamour. I took a minute to talk to stylist Ryan Nickulas of the Ryan Darius Salon in the West Village about how to get this oh-so-pretty, natural look he calls the “Patty Cake Curl.” Start by taking medium-sized section of hair and wrap it around your finger in a circle to create a pin curl. Then take a flat iron and close it around the curl for 15-20 seconds to create the perfect “undone” curl that a curling iron just can’t achieve. Work your way around your head, starting from the back and finishing with the front pieces. You’ll be left with easy pretty hair in no time that can help you conquer any city!

Shopper’s Diary: Baileys Cafe in Herefordshire

From Julie:

One of our favorite sources is Baileys Home & Garden, in Herfordshire, two hours outside of London. The owners recently revamped the compound, which now includes a cafe/shop, several workshops, a studio, a smithy, as well as their own home. The cafe is located in a huge airy barn, with a concrete floor, whitewashed beams, and a selection of vintage, new, and repurposed housewares.
