Virgin America: Safety Dance video

Virgin America has unveiled a Glee-static safety video which turns the mundanities of pre-flight safety drills into a massive musical production number.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, with the help of choreographers Jamal Sims and Christopher Scott, the film features musical stars as well as Virgin cabin crew. Inevitably there is also a UGC-element, with consumers being invited to ‘audition’ for a future version of the video by uploading Instagram videos of their ‘freshest moves’ at VXsafetydance.com.

No doubt some will find it cringeworthy (although at the time of writing it has had 4 million YouTube views and overwhelmingly positive feedback there) but it seems bang on brand to us. Interestingly, it was created by Virgin’s own production company, Virgin Produced

Of course, other airlines have atempted to liven up safety videos in the past. Air New Zealand’s Hobbit-style effort was a particular favourite

In fact, Air NZ has made this a bit of a ‘thing’ for them, with videos starring Betty White

And the All Blacks

While Virgin Atlantic was a pioneer in terms of trying to something different in this area
